Inappropriate tv at Inlaws

Whilst I was at in laws on Sunday a dead body was on the TV screen whilst my FIL watched beregerac. I said at the time it wasnt appropriate for my 3 yo daughter but FIL just responded by saying 'she doesn't look very well' to his granddaughter. I was fuming so we left soon after.
I've said to my husband that we should say something to his parents before we visit next time such as ' can you make sure you're not watching an adult programme next time we visit?' (Or something similar -ideas?!) But he thinks we should ask them to turn the telly off or over if it happens again as he doesn't want to upset them. I'm saying I'm being proactive as they're still going to get upset and feel he's putting his parents feelings before our need to protect our child. He disagrees.

So now I gave two choices - either phone them up and say something - potentially upsetting them (which I've already done when I turned the telly over to cbbc bedtime when we were visiting over the summer as it was near bedtime and I wanted something calming) or go along with my husband.
What would you do?

What is Bergerac? Is it like Midsomer murders?

Butteredpars1ps · 18/10/2016 21:49

Apologies for the earlier typo (bloody spell check). I don't really think Telly Savalas was a brand of film. Blush

What's that Skip? There's a body in Charlie's library? I'm just at Diamonte Lil's. Put the clambers on. I'll be right over.

Butteredpars1ps · 18/10/2016 21:50

Clangers arghhh

AnyFucker · 18/10/2016 21:53

Bergerac/Babe Station

Easy mistake to make

I'm assuming it's rather before my time...89' baby here ...

ageingrunner · 18/10/2016 22:18

I loved 80s drama so much! I wish Howard's way was on again Blush

RubbishMantra · 18/10/2016 22:32

Mangoes, do you think Dennis Waterman is indeed a tiny man? And that's where Little Britain got their inspiration from? In his , all the musicians were set consideably further back from him, therefore making him appear taller...

And nooo, Cardigan, surely he pronounced it "MUGGHDUGH. Grin

IWouldLikeToSeeTheseMangoes · 18/10/2016 23:11

Haha Rubbish love it Grin I bet it was in their contract never to stand within 3 feet of him or instant dismissal.

I agree with you. X factor is a hideous exercise in bullying & public humiliation. Like being picked for sports only in front of millions of people. Vile, exploitative BS. But hey, it's entertaining so that's fine isn't it? As long as Simon Cowell is making enough money to keep himself in ego trousers. Maybe he'll run for public office, Donald Trump seems to be doing quite well!
I remember my little sister being frightened by 'scary music' on Bergerac, I remember being terrified by the phantom raspberry blower on the two Ronnies! Ridiculous I know, but real to me at the time. I was a child. They can be scared of hand driers & escalators FFS! They aren't little adults, their perception of what's real and not real is completely different to an adults. Maybe a corpse on Bergerac would go over their heads, maybe not. OP YANBU, she's your child & it's your call. I wouldn't bother posting your concerns on here though, it'll turn you into one of those 'looser' X factor contestants that it's fun to laugh at and belittle.

MissHooliesCardigan · 19/10/2016 08:11

Rubbish You are correct. The way I've spelled it sounds Liverpudlian and the thought of Jim Taggart talking with a scouse accent is rather disturbing.
When I used to work in a care home, we had a thing called Remeniscence therapy which involved the residents singing along to Vera Lynn and her ilk, looking at old photos and watching footage of the coronation and Pathe news.
I have visions of my generation sitting in care homes up and down the country singing along to the Human League and Duran Duran and watching Bergerac and Hawaii 5 O.

OhNoNotMyBaby · 19/10/2016 08:55

CLARENCE THE CROSS-EYED LION - that's brilliant FrancisCrawford Was that only in b&w? I loved that one.

[cue thousands of baby MNers asking how we could have ever watched tv in b&w only...]

OhNoNotMyBaby · 19/10/2016 08:57

Flipper and Wild Horses....

What's happened to all the animals these days? They seem to have completely stopped saving humans from danger..

RubbishMantra

Even now me and DP laugh ourselves silly saying "There's been a murrrrrrrrduh!"

You've got to give it to Taggart, there's not many shows that would run for another 20 years and keep it named after the bloke who died about two years into the series!

I think every Scottish actor has been in Taggart at some point. It was like the Scottish version of the Bill. I was in the Bill once when I was trying to be an actor. I thought I was set for life because the rule was "as long as you haven't been in the Bill for 3 months, you can be in it again". I was only in one episode though and only got one line: "SHE'S RAN ROUND THE BACK!" I had to shout. Oh I wish I could find the video.

Footle · 19/10/2016 09:49

Ohmuther, I'm terrified of hand dryers and I'm as grown up as it gets.
a ) they make a hideous noise and
b ) they blow the skin on the back of my hands into terrifying wrinkles that make me feel even older.

HalfShellHero · 19/10/2016 10:02

Oh right I see ! Nothing particularly bad there then.

MissHooliesCardigan · 19/10/2016 10:06

The one thing I saw as a child which did absolutely terrify me and actually gave me nightmares were the giant maggots in Dr Who. John Pertwee was the doctor at the time and I must have been about 5. And this was a show considered suitable for children! I mean, just look at the fuckers.

Neighbours terrified my nephew when he was three, specifically Mrs Mangle (?) in a face mask. I guess that meant face masks were banned too. Grin

Dontpanicpyke · 19/10/2016 10:11

Dr who was terrifying. Absolutkry terrifying.

Anyone old enough to remember a children's drama called 'The Changes?'

I think pylons went mad. Seriously

YogaDrone · 19/10/2016 10:26

An episode of Sapphire and Steel (anyone remember that? Joanna Lumley and David McCallum) freaked me out when I was very young and still gives me nightmares. Someone turned round and he had no face, just a smooth surface. Creepy. Doctor Who has done it since then too of course.

My sister is still scared of Triffids from the BBC TV adaptation of Day of the Triffids from the 80's and that was like an orange coloured loofah. Which proves there's no accounting for the things that freak us out as children Grin

MissHooliesCardigan · 19/10/2016 10:29

Dontpanic Yes, I do and agree that it was terrifying. Didn't all the machines start making a high pitched noise that was really unbearable so everyone started breaking all the machinery and the world reverted to a pre-industrial age and everyone suspected others of harbouring machinery. And the pylons were viewed with deep suspicion. It's obviously a metaphor for something (I've no idea what, though). It was very deep for a kids' programme.

smilingthroughgrittedteeth · 19/10/2016 10:34

I'm currently watching casualty whilst my 18 month old is on the floor playing with his cars, he occasionally looks up but I don't think he will be scarred for life, I watched major crimes whilst he was in the room yesterday where there was a body floating in a pool. There's a massive difference between that and a horror movie, I think your over reacting a bit

Scribblegirl · 19/10/2016 10:46

Kaitlink and LetitiaCropleysCookbook Grin

I see your Trainspotting story and raise you the time that my beloved Great Aunt bought my sister Saturday Night Fever on VHS because she knew she 'loved disco music'. It was an 8th birthday present....
