Inappropriate tv at Inlaws

Zippyette · 17/10/2016 21:43

Whilst I was at in laws on Sunday a dead body was on the TV screen whilst my FIL watched beregerac. I said at the time it wasnt appropriate for my 3 yo daughter but FIL just responded by saying 'she doesn't look very well' to his granddaughter. I was fuming so we left soon after.
I've said to my husband that we should say something to his parents before we visit next time such as ' can you make sure you're not watching an adult programme next time we visit?' (Or something similar -ideas?!) But he thinks we should ask them to turn the telly off or over if it happens again as he doesn't want to upset them. I'm saying I'm being proactive as they're still going to get upset and feel he's putting his parents feelings before our need to protect our child. He disagrees.

So now I gave two choices - either phone them up and say something - potentially upsetting them (which I've already done when I turned the telly over to cbbc bedtime when we were visiting over the summer as it was near bedtime and I wanted something calming) or go along with my husband.
What would you do?

Nastar that was unnecessarily rude. We're all having a bit of a laugh here - no need for that.

MissHooliesCardigan · 20/10/2016 09:13

Where has the OP gone? She's probably unable to type as she has her hands over her DD's eyes in case she gets corrupted by catching a glimpse of Cash in the Attic.

ilovechocolate07 · 20/10/2016 09:26

They do seem to play a lot of more grown up shows through the day on sky etc. but I think that there's a huge difference between say Frost and The Killing. At 3 she probably doesn't notice a tamer show. I can see where you're coming from as my dad has been known to watch 12 films while my young kids were there and I was a but taken aback at first but they are fine and know that the TV isn't real.

CoolCarrie · 20/10/2016 11:13

Gordon Jackson , what a lovely gentleman he was, brilliant actor in so many great films, especially Whiskey Galore, and the wonderful Upstairs, Downstairs. Bodie was soo hot and I was very sad when Lewis Collins died.

kali110 · 20/10/2016 11:38

Op didn't get the answer she wanted then Grin

caitlinohara · 20/10/2016 13:36

YABU, but I think you know that by now!

Really pisses me off that people only allow their kids to watch kids TV. What about documentaries and quiz shows? Kids learn a lot from watching 'grown up' TV. Ds1 shares my guilty pleasures of Columbo and Murder She Wrote and I'd rather he watched that than crappy cartoons. I wish they would move The Apprentice, Hunted and similar to the 8pm slot, it's far far more 'appropriate' for children than Eastenders.

Heatherjayne1972 · 20/10/2016 16:12

My teenager still remembers the trauma from CBeebies when aunty Mabel lost pippin - That was a bad day

Marymoosmum14 · 20/10/2016 17:10

Hahahaha Bergerac, not like its The Walking Dead is it. My 2 1\2 year old DD watches all sorts of different murder mystery programmes, well at least we have them on in the background whilst she plays.

Lalal00p5y · 20/10/2016 17:23

I totally think it matters what kids are allowed to watch. I think its a shame people are mocking the OP because she cares that her small child saw a dead person! Maybe there would be less messed up people in the world if parents actually monitored what their kids are watching.

user1474627704 · 20/10/2016 17:31

Of course it matters, but no, her child did not see a dead person. They saw (if they were remotely paying attention, which I doubt) an actor lying on the ground.
It's not a horror film, its a very innocuous, very bad, detective show from 30 years ago...its not going to warp anyones mind.

TheNaze73 · 20/10/2016 17:32

Heatherjayne That cracked me up. We have some reflection time, over the lost Pippin incident, once a year Wink

Serialweightwatcher · 20/10/2016 19:14

I don't think a 3 year old would think anything of it, probably that the person was asleep if you don't cause a fuss about it. Don't get too paranoid about stuff because it will rub off on your children. Even if they walk in and the actor had 'ketchup' all over them, say 'silly man fell in a bowl of ketchup' - just don't stress too much

Serialweightwatcher · 20/10/2016 19:15

Awww never saw the 'lost' Pippin episode but remember Auntie Mabel's chip pan going up in flames Shock

Serialweightwatcher · 20/10/2016 19:19

Forgot, also think it's a bit rude at someone else's house to turn the tv on to kids' shows because your child needs down time before bed - couldn't you have just read a book to them and left in-laws to watch their own programmes in their own house? When I was growing up, children had to fit in with the grown ups, not the other way around - I think we pander far too much to children now and that's why some are spoiled and rude because they feel they should always come first ... sometimes yes, but not always

iklboo · 20/10/2016 20:32

What about Pippin and the poo farm? That caused some consternation.

enterthedragon · 21/10/2016 08:16

I remember watching Dixon of dock green.

enterthedragon · 21/10/2016 08:19

Lewis Collins dead, when did that happen?

MissHooliesCardigan · 21/10/2016 08:25

iklboo Oh God, yes, the poo farm will be forever etched on my brain.
Who remembers Z cars?

FairyAnn · 21/10/2016 14:59

To be honest, I think as a child I was more traumatised by The Lion King, Watership Down, Basil the Great Mouse Detective and All Dogs Go To Heaven....

Bergerac would have been a relief! Grin

iklboo · 21/10/2016 15:09

Lewis Collins died in 2013 of cancer. I used to love him when I was little Sad

Did they watch Lovejoy afterwards. I would be more offended by Ian Mcshane's mullet:)

BlancheBlue · 21/10/2016 23:26

I loved lovejoy!
