This is so ridiculous, many of them look around 25.

Bit but he wouldn't be classed as a child at 18.

I'm sorry but an adult man should not be given priority over a child. I also wouldnt want adult men wandering round my dd school.

There are females at the camp.

user1470140070 · 17/10/2016 19:57

Waffles I think it's pretty much general knowledge that you can't. There's a little on it in this interesting article qz.com/520832/child-refugees-are-subjected-to-genital-tests-to-prove-their-age-and-they-may-not-even-work/

including a bit on ethical considerations a d other issues.

I have not looked at the photos

As an invigilator i spend hours walking round with nothing to do but watch the children

The vast, vast, vast majority of 15/16 year old boys look like 15/16 year old boys

In fact tache or no tache i have never seen one look like a full grown man

TheoriginalLEM · 17/10/2016 19:58

petiypois - as i undestand it these young men/teenagers/children are in more direct danger with specific threats against them so many families are indeed sending the boys away and the women are staying behind.

Its a desperately sad situation. They are HUMAN BEINGS ffs

clam · 17/10/2016 20:00

The way we have treated the people stuck at Calais will make me feel ashamed for the rest of my life

Why? Are you French? Last time I checked, Calais was in France, and the fact that the situation in "jungle" has been allowed to develop in the way it has is down to them.

I would imagine that the delays involved in bring over these - I'm going to call them "young adults," is down to having to verify their claimed family links.

Jaimx86 · 17/10/2016 20:00

Men in their twenties have been 'discovered' at schools before www.kentonline.co.uk/canterbury/news/immigrants-in-their-20s-put-25379/

KC225 · 17/10/2016 20:00

Almondpudding. I am in Sweden ( from the UK) I cannot speak for Germany but my DH is working with unaccompanied minors and Sweden has not prioritised males over females. Of the 3O in the home, 28 are boys. There are girls, mainly from Eritrea.

Boys and young men are the ones making the journey, just look at the photos at the borders from 2015. Mostly men. Boys come here on the understanding they will be able to establish themselves and then get the family over. Also they are considered more at risk re: fighting war zone.

At present the unaccompanied minors have dropped in Sweden as a whole and my DH works will close in April. But families, have increased.

.

Sweden has now changed to law, so they will be granted temporary permission to stay and you will not be able to apply for relatives to come over. This has resulted in a massive drop in applications and applications being withdrawn.

mouldycheesefan · 17/10/2016 20:00

There was a woman on the Jeremy vine show who took in a migrant child. He was 30.

Sancia · 17/10/2016 20:01

Being deeply traumatised didn't make them taller or... well. 35.

OK, to address to people wondering where the mothers and babies are - there are none, or very very few, at Calais. Other camps yes, they flee warzones, but Calais is where men who specifically want to reach the UK go because either a) they speak English and have a skill, and will find it easier to find skilled work in the UK than in Europe, or b) they want to work illegally which is easier to do in the UK than in European countries with stricter ID laws, or c) they have family connections here. You're mostly looking at men seeking work who possibly have family back home who can come once they are in the country.

This was highlighted when people tried to send sanitary products and baby clothes to Calais - they openly said they didn't need them, there were no women.

The children's cases should have been fast-tracked as they all claim to have family in the UK, so yes, I totally agree we shouldn't have left them there for months and years dragging their cases out.

However. These photos are a joke. The lad with the brother, yes, he looks 14, the others are not 17. PTSD doesn't make a teen look 35. Even meth can't make you taller, broader and grizzled.

And yeah, this is a major problem because children get treated a lot better. There have been numerous cases of foster carers taking in 'a teen' and getting a 35 year old bloke who hasn't been all that pleasant to them, adults infiltrating schools and so on. They chuck their papers in the water and see that as beneficial, and it isn't and it shouldn't be. There are genuine refugees who waterproof their papers and protect them. Why do some strap it to their body in clingfilm, and the others toss it?

I'm a lefty liberal but I don't appreciate those who take the piss.

228agreenend · 17/10/2016 20:01

My 14 year is 6ft. Someone thought he was 16. My 16 year is 6 ft 2.

KathArtic · 17/10/2016 20:03

If they are 14-17, then I'm 25 (but look 45)

abbsismyhero · 17/10/2016 20:03

One of them has a receding hairline how is he 17?

BowieFan · 17/10/2016 20:04

Yes, they look oldish. But I teach several lads who are 14/15/16 who look older than my DP. Also, people forget this, but poverty and stress ages you. It's possible they really are 14 but the stress of the situation has made them look far older.

Sadsnake · 17/10/2016 20:06

They are clearly men...wake up and smell the aftershave

almondpudding · 17/10/2016 20:07

KC225, Germany's policy of encouraging refugees to travel there and allowing those who do in has meant that the vast majority of refugees (many of whom are not from Syria or Iraq) are male.

That is a sexist policy. It was obviously going to be mostly young, able bodied males who can make that journey.

If Germany and other European countries wanted to take in great numbers of refugees, they should have to the camps bordering Syria and selected the most vulnerable, not prioritised those who felt able to risk the journey.

The whole thing has been an utter disgrace.

Every time someone in the UK says we must do something about Calais, they are asking us to prioritise mostly males in France over mostly females in Turkey and similar.

clam · 17/10/2016 20:08

My 14 year is 6ft. Someone thought he was 16. My 16 year is 6 ft 2.

It's nothing to do with height. It's build, facial hair (one of those "boys" had clearly been shaving for years) and hairline too. They have a "mature" man's body in many cases.

But when this was pointed out on a similar thread a few days ago, apparently it was deemed a racist remark.

ghostyslovesheep · 17/10/2016 20:09

Fisherwife I'd love to know what LA you 'foster' for as you claim repeatedly - because your attitude is awful

I work with UASC - they are age assessed for starters - they aren't just believed Hmm and that can be traumatic

I have NEVER once been treated anything but respectfully by the young people I work with and have never felt threatened by them - even when visiting them in their own accommodation

These young people are coming over to join family - others will follow - maybe the more vulnerable with no family in need of support from the LA

I'd love to introduce you to some of my UASC - maybe they would challenge your ignorant view of them

Wishforsnow · 17/10/2016 20:10

They are not children. The one with the receding hairline looks in his 30's. I think there have been a number of children who have subsequently found to be adults. That would be quite a worry in schools.

almondpudding · 17/10/2016 20:11

It's to do with bone fusion.

It would be a scientific anomaly for a 16 year old boy to have an 'adult physique' regardless of height.

I can't comment on the pictures from the DM though.

loobyloo1234 · 17/10/2016 20:11

I have to say when I saw the pictures, I was a bit Shock as they do look older

However, I dare say they have been rigorously checked because of the scrutiny

Makes me very sad ... that we've only taken 15 migrant 'children' in so far ... what about the one's that are younger than 14? Surely they are the one's most at risk within the camp? Hmm

SirChenjin · 17/10/2016 20:12

I have an (6 foot 1, well built) almost 19 year old and am pretty good at recognising a teenage boy when I see one - my arse are they all 14-18! Grin

Gileswithachainsaw · 17/10/2016 20:13

There's looking a couple of years older 228 Then there's stubble and crows feet and trying to pass fir at least 10 yrs younger.

I don't wish harm on anyone.

It's got nothing to do with wanting them to feel unwelcome or have no where to go.

But many of those "kids" are blatantly grown men

MidsummersNight · 17/10/2016 20:13

I don't care how old they are I'm just happy they are here, safe and away from awful camp conditions. Can't understand how anyone could think any differently?

myyoyo · 17/10/2016 20:14

15 year olds often have the build of adults. My 15 year old is 6ft+ with a tash.

Have you ever met any teens op?
