To not give a fuck about yeast spread costing a few more pennies when there are pensioners that have lost 30% of their pension

Even if the spread went up, its only pennies a week. This is all noise and distracting from the real issues.

Pensioners abroad have seen their pension be cut by 30% since the vote. 30 fucking percent that is no small amount and will negatively impact millions!

OP posts:
GerdaLovesLili · 13/10/2016 12:22

Thank God I bought a catering-sized bucket of the stuff.

expatinscotland · 13/10/2016 12:22

Can't really say I give a fuck about people who've moved abroad. They haven't had a cut, they've just experienced a currency fluctuation. Boohoo. So move back then.

TheFairyCaravan · 13/10/2016 12:23

They knew the risks when they moved abroad. I bet they were more than happy when the exchange rate was great.

MyschoolMyrules · 13/10/2016 12:24

What are we to do if they all decide to move back to the uk? Quick close the borders! Wink

BlindAssassin1 · 13/10/2016 12:25

It's hardly a group of pensions that gather the most sympathies.

I realise the media is treating this like a lite fluff story, but it points to more important issue that food will go up, and that is more serious for those who are actually poor, not for those on the costa del sunshine probably with decent way of life and cash rich.

The most barmy thing about the marmite story is that the product is made in this country but the owning company is not. Greed everywhere!

APlaceOnTheCouch · 13/10/2016 12:25

I'm sure people who moved overseas knew that currencies fluctuate. It's also likely that rather than panicking over the value of the pound today that they are taking a longer view, aware that exchange rates change all the time and that it's just as likely to go up and down again in the future.
tbh if they hadn't taken that into account, I would be very surprised.
but I don't care at all about Marmite except a vague sense of pleasure that Tesco is calling Unilever out on their attempt to fleece both supermarkets and consumers

OhNoNotMyBaby · 13/10/2016 12:25

Anyone going to be stockpiling Marmite? I simply can't imagine a world without it...

Actually - since the world's stock is all made in Burton, isn't this our secret Brexit weapon? We can simply hold the rest of the world to ransom!!

I'm brilliant!

SleepFreeZone · 13/10/2016 12:26

Yep, get the bastards out picking Marmite off the fields.

LagunaBubbles · 13/10/2016 12:26

My sentiments exactly.

Jules125 · 13/10/2016 12:26

I don't know OP - it seems likely to me that prices of lots of food is going to go up over the next few months, unless the £ regains a lot soon (unlikely I reckon).

A few pence on marmite is no big deal, but a 10%-20% rise across the board would affect poor familiies a lot. Many are already struggling.

So yes, I think this is important, really important to report.

MovingOnUpMovingOnOut · 13/10/2016 12:26

I think both of those examples (devalued pound and cost of imports going up) are symptoms of the same thing.

So I can be concerned about both thanks. How we will fare as an economy post Brexit is a serious issue.

I quite fancy a bit of Marmite-y cheese on toast now.

SleepFreeZone · 13/10/2016 12:27

I have a very large jar of Marmite in my unbowed if anyone is interested 😏

SleepFreeZone · 13/10/2016 12:27

Is unbowed even a word!!!?

BowieFan · 13/10/2016 12:27

I don't have any sympathies. Any pensioner living abroad is not living on the breadline.

I care more about the disabled people who are getting 30% of their benefits taken away in april. They don't have the luxury of a fat pension or being able to live abroad, or get their heating bill paid for them.

The pensioners knew the risks, but if they want a life in the sun then they have no right to complain when things don't always turn out well for them.

Gowgirl · 13/10/2016 12:28

I have an unopened jar dh brought me for Christmas, shall I auction it on mumsnet?

MyschoolMyrules · 13/10/2016 12:29

Sleep free, sell it on eBay. You will make a killing,

SleepFreeZone · 13/10/2016 12:33

Oops I posted my stealth boast photo on the Brexit thread lol

Artandco · 13/10/2016 12:34

It's is an issue. It's not just marmite. It will spread across all food items. Many will really struggle if food bills increase 20%. Then when utility bills increase 20%, clothing, furniture, rent etc

InTheseFlipFlops · 13/10/2016 12:37

I saw pensioners buying marmite today.
have no idea the relevance but wanted to join in

Overrunwithlego · 13/10/2016 12:38

I have sympathy for everyone adversely affected by the currency fluctuations, although I certainly have more sympathy for some than others. Amazingly I think many uk pensioners living in the EU voted to leave. Gotta say, I have little sympathy for them.

Pipthedog · 13/10/2016 12:38

And if food prices soar here more pensioners in the U.K. will be struggling whereas those who relocated won't see a difference in their food prices.

As far as I'm concerned when you move abroad you factor in currency fluctuations, health care in the country you are in and don't expect to vote in the UK either.

Also, they haven't paid into the system for years. It's a pay as you go system meaning us tax payers are paying for the old age pensioners of today, and the taxpayers of tomorrow will pay our pensions. They paid for the pensions of the pensioners when they were taxpayers. There is no investment element.

At least they get to have a retirement. Everyone I work with will have to work until they're 90 or drop dead on the job Confused

KondosSecretJunkRoom · 13/10/2016 12:41

Your like Lady of the Manor there sleep with your grim Marmite and your PG tips on show but you just wait till there's a shortage on Coke and Haribo, then the worm will turn.

InTheseFlipFlops · 13/10/2016 12:41

There's been a lot of threads on this theme, business needs to take smaller profits, prices need to go up and wages need to go up.
Everything is out of sync at the moment.
Farmers aren't earning the money
Factory workers aren't earning the money.
So who is???
