To take free hotel toiletries even though I don't need them?

I don't stay over often in hotels but had to earlier this week for work with a colleague. I commented in the morning that I'd stocked up on the toiletries and my colleague really laid into me, saying it was selfish and that it was eating into the hotels profit and wrong to take them if I didn't need them.

(For info, I tend to take them home and leave them in my spare room for guests, or use them as an emergency when I run out of shampo)

AIBU? I just assumed everyone did it!

I always take all the toiletries. I figure I have paid for them in the price of my room.

Snaffling the free toiletries is one of the Top 10 best things about staying in a hotel! Ignore your colleague!

I had a friend who traveled a lot. Global, High class. She used to collect them and bring them to me in a placcy bag. I didn't travel, brought up my family and absolutely LOVED that bit of luxury in tiny containers. Bliss. She does the same now for my grown up daughters.

Yes I thought the toiletries were included in the price of the room? I'm happy to be corrected on that. I almost always take them. Now people that walk off home with towels or bathrobes... that's a bit different!

You paid for them so take them. I take them as they very useful. I used to take the disposable slippers too as i had a patient going through cancer treatment in hospital. She used a pair every time she was admitted. Sadly she now passed away now.

There will be a lot of people along in a minute to call it theft.

Oh thank god for that. I genuinely felt bad and couldn't really argue becaus yes it is a bit cheeky but they were nice White Company ones and I actually got excited when I saw them. Sewing kits and vanity stuff and everything!

It's almost an unwritten rule that you take them. It's hardly going to eat into their profits when you look at how much everything is inflated. Tell her if she doesn't want hers you'll take them

I've worked in hotels where it was policy for them to be thrown away if we the housekeeping staff were unable to tell if they had been opened or not.

I thought everyone did.

Me and dh have a right old collection of mini toiletries from holidays and business trips

DH always picks them up because his work collect them to donate to a womens refuge. I think that's a lovely idea. Before that though, we always kept them for guests/emergencies.

The cost of a set of the sample size toiletries will be factored into the price of your room. Your colleague is a self-righteous twat.

Upmarket hotels use the brand of their in-room toiletries as a selling point. They are expecting that you will take them home.

Oh White Company ones are my favourite. You HAVE to take them

My only problem is the hotels in california dont do shower gel, just soap bars. We just got back from a road trip so stayed in 10 hotels. My favorite was the body lotion from the Handelry in San Francisco. The smell was gorgeous

Yes I take them...Perfect for sending on DS's cub camp too because he isn't going to use any toiletries..Perfect for not taking up space.

Yep I always take them! I use them when we go away and stay in places that don't have them.

I don't take them because they're usually crap. The only exception I made was the Disney hotel in paris this year because they all had mickey mouse shaped tops and I couldn't resist.

The point is, the price they charge for the rooms, all the toiletries are included. If your colleague doesn't want them, that's up to them, they are being charged for them whether they use, or take them, or not.

I've stopped doing so. My cupboards had gradually accumulated tiny impractical bottles I never bothered using, and when I had a Kondo'd them I decided they were just more Stuff for the sake of Stuff that adds nothing to my life. But for someone else they are things of joy.

I always snaffle the toiletries! I was under the impression that they would replace them anyway for the next guest . Not leave them. What if the previous guest had contaminated them in some way?

I've stayed in hotels with little tastefully written cards telling you to take the towelling slippers, so I did .

Also, we stayed in a gorgeous hotel in Greece this year where they provided complimentary toiletries, replenished daily. The Housekeeper and me had a 'system' that ensured I came home with a lovely stash of stuff . I'm sure the lovely housekeepers couldn't have cared less but it made me feel better!
