To take free hotel toiletries even though I don't need them?

I don't stay over often in hotels but had to earlier this week for work with a colleague. I commented in the morning that I'd stocked up on the toiletries and my colleague really laid into me, saying it was selfish and that it was eating into the hotels profit and wrong to take them if I didn't need them.

(For info, I tend to take them home and leave them in my spare room for guests, or use them as an emergency when I run out of shampo)

AIBU? I just assumed everyone did it!

I will take any future ones for women's aid (already sign up for free nappy samples etc for them even though my boys are 8)

That is a fantastic idea. I think I'm going to do the same. I stayed in a women's hostel after my brother attacked me when I was pregnant they were lovely lovely people.

I often feel justified in nabbing some buffet items for 'elevenses' OK sometimes I've basically made a picnic lunch

Bubbinsmakesthree My mum and I had a wonderful trip to Florence and she insisted on the buffet breakfast rather than wasting our money on breakfast in the room because she said it was more sociable.

I dragged myself down there having had to wash and dress and brush my hair and realised it was because there was a lot more available for her to stash away for packed lunch - cheese and cold meat, bread and pastries, sausages that she let go cold for later. I let her get on with it but I put my foot down when I discovered she was stockpiling cooked meat in the wardrobe. You couldn't really argue with my mum. I did notice that she wasn't alone and the staff didn't care.

I said I'd like to have lunch in a restaurant with her and she said: 'Why?' while giving me the look that said: 'Are you truly my child, that I brought you up in this foolish way?'

We went to Barcelona too. I did my best halting Spanish in the underground and the man in the booth said in perfect English: 'Yes, madam. You need a carnet ticket. It's valid for 10 journeys. You and your mother can travel on one, just make sure you've punched it for both journeys. Have a lovely holiday.'

On the platform my mum said: 'I think I'm picking this Spanish up because I understood nearly every word he said.'

I laughed at the time but looking back, I think she was taking the piss out of me and my sophisticated ways Smile

I've told this before, but the most eye watering "if it's not nailed down" was a friend staying at a posh hotel. Maid left linen closet door open, her room was next door and if she opened door she was blocked from the cctv. Let's just say she now has a full set of Egyptian cotton king size bed linen and a fluffy robe

That's just stealing. Even naffer than most hotel products.

SlinkyVagabond · 14/10/2016 16:42

Totally agree One, we were all aghast at her neck.(and it made me think a lot less of her). They were beautiful though, really high count.

OneFootinFront · 14/10/2016 16:47

I'd find it hard to remain a friend if I'd witnessed them stealing ...

Bubbinsmakesthree · 14/10/2016 17:29

I put my foot down when I discovered she was stockpiling cooked meat in the wardrobe

That was a genuine LOL Grin

I take them if they're nice. They only go in the bin otherwise which is wasteful.

GrainOfSalt · 14/10/2016 18:13

They are not free - they are accounted for in the price of the room. You are not stealing them either - again, you have paid for them. Your colleague is a loon. (I save them for camping Grin )

PortiaCastis · 14/10/2016 18:23

Taking the shhets is a bit much though.
I'll post this again so you can see hotel costs

A friend of mine stayed at Raffles in Singapore and amazingly a dressing gown made it back to England. And so did the receipt for it a short while later. Her father was not impressed; he was paying. Shock

LadySpratt · 14/10/2016 20:44

On the other hand I once left the Penhaligons toiletries in the hotel bathroom. Really not my taste. 😝

Housewife2010 · 22/10/2016 16:29

We have Hermes toiletries in our hotel room including an eau de toilette. I'm taking all of it! Shame there isn't a complementary Birkin too!
