To take free hotel toiletries even though I don't need them?

I don't stay over often in hotels but had to earlier this week for work with a colleague. I commented in the morning that I'd stocked up on the toiletries and my colleague really laid into me, saying it was selfish and that it was eating into the hotels profit and wrong to take them if I didn't need them.

(For info, I tend to take them home and leave them in my spare room for guests, or use them as an emergency when I run out of shampo)

AIBU? I just assumed everyone did it!

I personally wouldn't, but it's only because I have loads of sample stuff cluttering up the place which I don't use. When/if I run out I definitely would.

Someone mentioned women's refuge, what a fantastic idea. I'm going to look into that so the stuff I do have goes to a good cause.

Huldra · 12/10/2016 19:28

It's expected. Unless it's one of those combination body gel / shampoo dispensers attached to the wall, don't take them Grin

P1nkP0ppy · 12/10/2016 19:29

I take them along with other freebies such as those free with magazines, to our local homeless charity. (They also accept unwanted, clean bedding, duvets etc. and I always add washing powder/soaps too.)

I've enrolled my family and friends to do the same.

Minthins, can you please change your username?

I'm now craving After 8's!

RosaRosaRose · 12/10/2016 19:30

loafer do do that. We were so happy to get the luxuries we couldn't afford. Life was bleak enough, even a little bottle of special shower gel was lovely.

TondelayaDellaVentamiglia · 12/10/2016 19:33

that's such a good idea....about the refuges

i stash mine in a massive basket in the bathroom and pass them out to visitors my mother

last time we stayed in a H10 they had loads...tissues, combs, sewing kit, razors, cotton buds, cotton pads, toothpaste.....I could barely get my weekend bag closed.
and they replenished the whole lot every day!

the cat really likes being combed with his H10 comb.

FadedRed · 12/10/2016 19:33

What's the difference between using them during your stay, or putting them in your bag to take home. They are put there for your use. The price of them is included in the hotels overheads - therefore you are paying for them whether you use them there or take them home with you.

LadyTrevelyan · 12/10/2016 19:52

You must!

DC were on holiday with xh this summer and DS told me he had special presents for me. He had collected all the bits and brought them back to me Smile. Closest I got to Greece this year and all olive oily. Treat.

Oly5 · 12/10/2016 19:57

Of course I take the toiletries!!

TaterTots · 12/10/2016 20:12

Of course people take them! Why wouldn't you? I take the coffee sachets and I don't even drink coffee!

Your colleague may be the most boring woman in the world.

alfagirl73 · 12/10/2016 20:17

Absolutely take them! They're great for guests/travelling etc... and they are absolutely figured in to the price of the room, therefore you've paid for them whether you use them or not.

I got some wonderful Penhaligans miniatures from a rather nice hotel in London... you can absolutely bet I was taking those!

MERLYPUSSEDOFF · 12/10/2016 20:24

I take them on camp.

I will take any future ones for women's aid (already sign up for free nappy samples etc for them even though my boys are 8)

ChazsBrilliantAttitude · 12/10/2016 20:30

My company also has donation bins for toiletries for the local refuge. Its a simple idea that can make a real difference.

Dontpanicpyke · 12/10/2016 20:34

Dh works away all week and always stocks up. Your colleague is daft.

Greyandyellow · 12/10/2016 20:35

I stayed at a Park Hyatt hotel once, and there was a note in the room that if you wanted to take the minuscule bottle of shampoo (or conditioner or body wash) it would be about £3 each (converting currency)

£3 for 50 ml of shampoo - what a rip off!

TalcAndTurnips · 12/10/2016 20:43

I always shove the lone hot chocolate sachet into my suitcase (for there is only ever one) on multi-night stays - and enjoy the frisson of excitement as it is replaced each day.

I had a lovely stay in York earlier this year and still have five sachets of Cacao Fantasie Shock to enjoy at my leisure.

user1468353179 · 12/10/2016 20:46

I love the mini Heinz ketchup and mustard bottles you get with room service in the US. I don't use them, but I bring them home because they're so cute.

BennyTheBall · 12/10/2016 20:50

I never take them because I know I'll shove them in a bathroom cupboard and never use them. I never even touch them as I bring my own.

My dh however, scoops them all up without fail. Drives me nuts. He's just bought home about 12 dinky bottles of Orla Kiely toiletries from a work trip to a hotel. They would be consigned to a cupboard before being thrown out by me, but my MiL has appropriated them for a hamper competition for her WI!

HemanOrSheRa · 12/10/2016 20:56

Hehe! Huldra we stayed in a very nice hotel recently that had gorgeous toiletries in handmade pottery bottles. No room for swiping, unless you'd brought decanting bottles! The grumbling amongst our party was very funny Grin.

Vulty · 12/10/2016 20:58

Hahaha oh dear!

Every time my OH is away for work he brings all the little toiletries back for me! I love it!

Vulty · 12/10/2016 21:00

I might also add the last time I filled my T-bag container it was all T-bags taken from hotel rooms. The coffee and hot chocolate sachets are good too.

OhMrDarcy · 12/10/2016 21:01

I run a holiday let and put in free toiletry kits - 4 little bottles of lotions and shampoos etc, cotton wool pads, shower caps and sewing kits, all in a little pouch. Nobody takes them or uses them ever. Tis sad, I thought they would be a treat.

CurlyMango · 12/10/2016 21:03

They are great to donate to shelters, for people whom may have left in a hurry without anything. Or just for some washing for them.

SellFridges · 12/10/2016 21:04

I know several colleagues used to donate them to Women's Aid.

expatinscotland · 12/10/2016 21:04

I never stay in any place with nice enough toiletries to take. Why bother taking that cheap shite?
