To take free hotel toiletries even though I don't need them?

I don't stay over often in hotels but had to earlier this week for work with a colleague. I commented in the morning that I'd stocked up on the toiletries and my colleague really laid into me, saying it was selfish and that it was eating into the hotels profit and wrong to take them if I didn't need them.

(For info, I tend to take them home and leave them in my spare room for guests, or use them as an emergency when I run out of shampo)

AIBU? I just assumed everyone did it!

We take the mini ones. I use them for weekends away (if not staying in a hotel where they will be more obviously) or for our guest room.

RoseGoldHippie · 13/10/2016 19:59

Does your friend own the hotel or something? The toiletries etc are there for you to use no one is checking the bin to make sure you used it there otherwise they'll send you a bill!

I always take the shampoo which i use if in emergency shortage - what does drive me insane is DP always takes the hand soap which ends up sitting for years in the dish as we use liquid anyway - so grim :( x

theclick · 13/10/2016 20:03

Just take them! They expect you to

BowieFan · 13/10/2016 20:05

My rule is "if it's not nailed down, stick it in the suitcase."

I have taken shampoo, conditioner, soaps, slippers, dressing gowns, tea bags (Special tea, obviously) and, once, a towel (by mistake). I have no shame at all.

I am very proud of the two tea cups and saucers that I stole borrowed from the Ritz.

Obviously, don't go nicking the bed or anything but they factor in the shampoo and stuff into the hotel price. If they're in the room, they're there for you to take, basically.

BowieFan · 13/10/2016 20:10

I don't know what it is, but when I enter a hotel I turn into a kleptomaniac. The highlight of our trip to New York last year was when the cleaner foolishly left her trolley unattended in the corridor when she went for a fag. It was like a smash and grab situation. To be fair, I wasn't the only person who was taking stuff...

I'm awful for this kind of thing though. I once got invited to a party at Elton John's house because I do a lot of work with a charity he is a patron of. I felt like I couldn't leave without taking a memento. I took a (solid, I think) gold ash tray that had his initials on it. It is, quite obviously, on display proudly in my house.

RoseGoldHippie · 13/10/2016 20:12

Bowie - you sound like me last weekend with the maids trolley! Full of plasters and my feet were cut to shite from really stupid gorgeous new shoes! I went for it and the people I were with just tutted in embarrassment hahaha!

I've always been shameless at this kind of thing. At least now I can blame it on being old!

I once nicked six rolls of toilet roll from a swanky hotel. I'd never felt anything like it and haven't since, it was that good. It was like a religious experience. I ended up rationing it to a once a week treat to make it last longer. Went back to the hotel and they didn't have the same one, so I couldn't nick anymore! Bastards.

limited My mum has 4 holiday lets and she uses these people

milkshakeandmonstermunch · 13/10/2016 20:42

Oh I take whatever is there! It's built into the price of the room so you're actually paying them more by not taking them Wink. My DH always brings the toiletries (and biscuits) home from his work trips and I get disproportionately excited. We use them when 1) we go swimming or 2) we've ran out of our usual stuff. Your colleague is a weirdo.

Doilooklikeatourist · 13/10/2016 20:44

We have a B & B and put mini shampoo and body wash in the bathrooms , I wish people would take them , half used or unused
They cost way more than 2p , but take them , please
wa have a cupboard full of half used tubes that I don't want
Off they will go to the refuge

SlinkyVagabond · 13/10/2016 20:57

I'm staying in a lovely boutique hotel in London next weekend. My Dd has already looked at website and called dibs on the Ren toiletries, the tea pigs tea bags and the free slippers. I've been told to take my birthday l'occitaine stuff and use that. Cheeky monkey.
I've told this before, but the most eye watering "if it's not nailed down" was a friend staying at a posh hotel. Maid left linen closet door open, her room was next door and if she opened door she was blocked from the cctv. Let's just say she now has a full set of Egyptian cotton king size bed linen and a fluffy robe.

LadySpratt · 14/10/2016 06:21

Limited you did make me laugh with the 'loofah dried to the thickness of a Ryvita' of which you had many. I had an image of you tucking into a loofah - just think of the fibre!

It sounds like you've stayed at many more places than me so do go ahead and start one! You could even write a blog - a real soap opera. Grin

Cleanermaidcook · 14/10/2016 08:24

dh stays away for work often, last week he brought me toiletries back from Malmaison labelled "The best shower gel you'll ever steal" made me chuckle. As everyone says the cost is factored into the room price, they're yours.

KayTee87 · 14/10/2016 08:38

I always take them! They will set their rates to cover toiletries or they wouldn't offer them Hmm what a weird thing for your colleague to say.

Bubbinsmakesthree · 14/10/2016 08:54

Bowiefan - I was just going to chastise you for taking dressing gowns which are very clearly NOT for taking when I realised I am sitting here in a lovely kimono-style cotton robe DH and I nicked from a very fancy hotel in Japan.

There were two robes in the bedroom when we arrived and somehow housekeeping ended up leaving us another one during our stay so there were three. We figured they'd never miss the 3rd one (and if they did figure it out and bill us for it we'd have happily paid for the memento). 10 years ago and it's been used daily ever since!

(The hotel featured in a well known film I love and an identical robe is worn by one of the lead characters, so it is extra special).

Oysterbabe · 14/10/2016 09:16

I always take them. They're useful to put in hand luggage for short trips abroad.

magratvonlipwig · 14/10/2016 09:23

Definitely take them they're in the price of the room. And are perfect for weekends away or hand luggage only flights with the 100ml restriction.
They are yours !!

See, I wouldn't have normally taken the bathrobe, but it was from a very swanky hotel in Vegas which they were demolishing a couple of months later. I didn't feel guilty because it reminds me of an amazing time and it's not something you could easily get hold of. Plus, it was 20 years ago nearly and I don't think they were that bothered.

limitedperiodonly · 14/10/2016 09:30

PortiaCastis I have Cole and Lewis lemongrass and bergamot hand lotion in my handbag at the moment. It was from a B&B in King's Cross - maybe one of your mum's. My friend was staying and she knew I'd like it.

LadySpratt it was tastier once I put some free jam on it Wink. I love those little pots of jam and honey but I only take them if I have breakfast in the room. I don't have the cheek to load up at the buffet.

PortiaCastis · 14/10/2016 09:42

limited My Mum's are in Cornwall and are holiday lets, but she provides welcome packs and clean linen.plus we bake scones as part of these packs . Obviously these things are reflected in Mums charges

Bubbinsmakesthree · 14/10/2016 11:57

Bowiefan if the hotel was set for demolition you were very restrained with you bathrobe - I'd probably have been walking out with light fittings Grin

Bubbinsmakesthree · 14/10/2016 12:00

Oh and I don't take the jam pots at breakfast but I rarely have much of an appetite early-on so I often feel justified in nabbing some buffet items for 'elevenses' OK sometimes I've basically made a picnic lunch

I can be swayed by a tortoiseshell-effect comb or some thoughtful tampons.

God - you're shallow.

Bubbinsmakesthree · 14/10/2016 12:26

I am intrigued by the concept of a 'thoughtful tampon' Grin
