To not wear clean clothes everyday

Happyhippy45 · 10/10/2016 16:47

Clothes are not "dirty," they don't smell and I don't want to wash them. I hang them up on a peg/chair to air and wear another couple of times over the course of the week.
DH doesn't understand this and thinks it's a bit minky.
Talking about tops, jeans etc......not pants and socks. Bras are a whole nother subject.

"Jeans tend to crease really badly behind the knee and across the crotch area."

Creasing has nothing to do with being dirty.

Happyhippy45 · 12/10/2016 09:25

Interesting responses. Especially about tumble drying.
Growing up my mum had to hang the washing up. Inside (on four clothes horses) or outside. There were 5 of us. No tumble dryer in the 70s.
Nowadays she tumble dries EVERYTHING. She visits us and "helps" with the laundry. I've given up telling her that we don't tumble dry things we're not in a hurry for. My MIL is the same (but she doesn't do our laundry.)
I think they don't see past the convenience of getting your clothes dried quickly......which is what it is. It's not an essential item but it seems many folks use it as a daily essential.

creasing has nothing to do with being dirty. maybe not, but in my mind there is a direct link between jeans that are creased to hell which look like they have been worn for days and 'they must be dirty if they have been wearing them for days'. Its a connected thought.

Butterpuff · 12/10/2016 09:33

If you wash your jeans daily don't they fade terribly and have a really short shelf life? Just wondering. I'm a skank apparently. My jeans easily do 2-3 days, I had no idea people were staring at my crotch and behind my knees in horror at my mankiness........then again when I wear no makeup and my hair looks like I've been dragged through a hedge backwards maybe my crotch and knee backs don't get noticed! Wink

MrsHathaway · 12/10/2016 10:07

I guess in The Olden Days (Peppa voice) when people had fewer items of clothing it would be a pain to wait for things.

Agree with pps that clothes hanging around damp for more than maybe a day start to smell stale. I've stopped hanging things outside that can be tumble dried because they can spend eight hours on the line and still not be dry. Stuff that needs sunshine for stains, or has transfers which can't be tumbled, gets a line dry and then transfer to maiden.

Awkward time of year at the moment where the air is too damp outside for line drying, but the radiators aren't on inside yet. Tumble city.

We have solar panels so I don't feel as bad about using electricity. So long as we don't use the washing machine and the tumble at the same time we are still exporting to the National Grid.

It must be exhausting being so observant and judgemental. I don't think most people notice other peoples creased crotches and knees..

squishee · 12/10/2016 10:56

Grin at this thread having turned into a judgefest / tumble drier wars Grin

MuseumOfCurry · 12/10/2016 11:15

Just to add, for the people who wear the same jeans for 2/3/4 days in a row, you do know you LOOK like you have been wearing them for days? Jeans tend to crease really badly behind the knee and across the crotch area. So for all you people who plan to wear your jeans for the 4th day running on tomorrow's school run, please don't. You look like an utter skank!

I had to chuckle at this one fucking nutter. Meadow, take a deep breath and check out this link:

Sallystyle · 12/10/2016 11:23

My jeans don't crease at the knees or crotch.

And if they did and someone thought I looked like a skank? Well, that says a lot more about them than it does me.

scrumptiouscrumpets · 12/10/2016 11:33

What's the logic behind wearing a bra for a week but washing shirts after one wear ? Surely bras get just as dirty and sweaty as shirts.

scrumptiouscrumpets · 12/10/2016 11:37

^^This
Who the hell notices this kind of stuff??

RazWaz · 12/10/2016 11:42

Jeans last for weeks until they have a stain o start to smell (usually at about 4 weeks for me so I wash them at 3 weeks to avoid it).

Shirts last about 5 wearings each unless it was boiling hot that day. Underwear changed daily. Socks get the sniff test, any smell and they go in the washing basket otherwise I'll wear them again. I am a wheelchair user though so my socks don't get as sweaty as other people's.

I don't sweat much and my OH is very honest with me about "does this/me smell" so the above works for me. Everyone's body is different so you might find you can wear clothes a shorter/longer length of time.

Reusing clothes isn't dirty at all as long as your not sweating buckets and rolling around in mud.

TheHighPriestessOfTinsel · 12/10/2016 11:57

I agree with the concept of the sniff test.
However, I'm sweatier than average (despite heavy-duty antiperspirant) and genuinely find that anything that's been vaguely near my armpits needs washing after a single day's wear.Today I am wearing a loose, light, 100% merino wool jumper, but it's too warm for a tshirt underneath, so it will need a wash this evening despite being made from natural fibres. Jeans and cardies are about the only thing that I can make do multiple days.

I keep hoping that the Tudor system of wearing a full linen undershirt and trousers will come back in, as apparently this means you can wear your clothes for months on end.

Salmotrutta · 12/10/2016 12:13

I'm fairly sure quite a sizeable number of things crease during wear - even after about 5 minutes of wearing and sitting down.

Like linen stuff or smart work trousers - so if you wear a linen skirt or smart trousers for 5 minutes and sit down in it apparently you will look like a skank?

Even if they were freshly washed and ironed that very day?

Lazyafternoon · 12/10/2016 12:29

Meadows

I dread to think what you must think of me on my dash to pre-school. No actually, I don't care.

Although at pick up today for the first time I had a bit of glance about at what other people were wearing (after thinking of this post). Thankfully I felt in good company with a general theme of no make up, scraped back in need of a wash hair, dribble/food/ snot on our tops. You know what though - I didn't sniff their crotch or inspect behind the knee, but jeans appeared acceptably clean to me ;-)

FruitCider · 12/10/2016 12:34

Everything gets washed after one wear here, except for pyjamas and jumpers, which are worn twice. I change my pants at night too. I just couldn't imagine wearing the same pair of jeans/a top twice. Sorry!

MrsHathaway · 12/10/2016 12:35

Modern jeans all look scruffy to me - all artistic rips and worn patches and carefully ironed-in creases.

QueenLizIII · 12/10/2016 13:01

Bras need a wash every time as it is against your skin and it stops them going that awful grey colour especially the white ones.

As i leave the house at 7:30am to go on London public transport, if I am going out at night after work, I take a change of top at least and clean up in the toilet stall with baby wipes and more deodorant.

You get very grimey and sweaty in London.

Chopstick17 · 12/10/2016 13:38

What ???? Mine go at ages between washes unless it's very hot, sweaty weather. I don't wear the same bra every day either so I think that helps. This is crazy talk!

Chopstick17 · 12/10/2016 13:40

All of you over exuberant washers are wasting water, a valuable and precious resource!

Chopstick17 · 12/10/2016 13:45

No, bras aren't worn close under your armpit so don't get sweaty unless it's hot weather or you wear a sports bra for exercising/manual work.

captainfarrell · 12/10/2016 13:49

Jeans get worn many times before I wash them unless they are stained and even then I will pot treat the stain if I can. I only wash he knickers and socks after every wear. Bras don't get washed often at all, I have quite a few so I think that makes a difference.I am a clean person, I shower daily, sometimes twice. I don't do manual work . People pay me compliments on how I dress/look so I can't be that much of a festering heap!

captainfarrell · 12/10/2016 13:50
  • spot treat not pot!!!
Sunbeam18 · 12/10/2016 14:17

How can anyone has the time or energy for all this needless washing and ironing? This thread is quite depressing. We are humans, humans have a smell.

ohdearme1958 · 12/10/2016 15:11

Sunbeam, I factor housework and laundry into my daily schedule and I still have loads of free time. Doing it isn't a problem.

And yes humans have a smell but it doesn't mean there's no need for a good standard of hygiene, or being well presented.

My mum used to tell me - you can be poorly dressed, but as long as your clothes are clean and pressed, and your shoes are polished, you can go anywhere.
