AIBU?

AIBU to think that Nursery shouldn't have done this?

We have recently started weaning my 6 month old DD with fruit purée and some BLW. At the minute it is 1-2 meals per day. She was at Nursery all day on Monday so I dropped her off with her usual milk and a jar of food I know she liked and wasn't allergic to (hasn't previously had a reaction). On Thursday she was in from 12.30-4pm so I gave her breakfast and thought she would be fine at nursery and give her tea at 5/6pm. Anyway when I picked her up her diary said she really enjoyed her yoghurt, but I hadn't given a yoghurt for her to have. Queried this and they said they have Nursery fromage frais that they'd given her. AIBU to think they shouldn't have done this, given the fact she a) hasn't had dairy (aside from milk) and b) didn't seek permission?? In hindsight after a bit of research I've decided the only fromage frais she will be having is no added refined sugar, as this is the 3rd or 4th highest ingredient in most!! She's a baby fgs I don't think she needs the sugar..

Aren't you supposed to start them off with veg purée anyway?

Yabu
Its normal for young babies to have all milk supplied by parents but food is normally supplied by the nursery

Have you discussed weaning with them?

12.30 till 4pm is too long to go without food
In baby rooms, there is normally food offered every couple of hours

The NHS website states
"Your baby's first foods can include mashed or soft cooked fruit and vegetables like parsnip, potato, yam, sweet potato, carrot, apple or pear, all cooled before eating. Soft fruits like peach or melon, or baby rice or baby cereal mixed with your baby's usual milk, are good as well."
She was given apple and pear so..
And obviously I gave them plenty of milk for god sake I don't expect them to starve my child.

Fruit purée is really bad too -as bad as sugar. Mash the fruit so she gets some of the fibre, else you may as well give her normal sugary things. The purée is just the juice (sugar) from the fruit without any of the goodness.
For what it's worth I was like this with my first born. I hated fromage frias because of the sugar content. Still can't believe how wilfully people give them to their kids... however if you're gonna be precious about that then avoid the purées too..

Ah you didn't say breaSt milk in which case your point about dairy makes sense. Still, do you have any reason to think she will be? The vast majority of people aren't so starting on the premise she will be seems odd.
thay said I do get it, I felt similar but it is just one of the things you need to accept when using nursery. Pick your battles.

This would probably annoy me to be honest. Although if your child is allergic to dairy you would know through breast milk anyway. Like PP said lactose is in breastmilk anyway it's cows milk protein they're allergic too and yoghurt is better to try them on than a glass of milk as levels are lower. Anyway I digress. The fact she'd only just started weaning means they shouldn't really be giving her things unless you've discussed it. What did they say when you discussed it?

What makes people think the puree was from a jar?

Report
GruffaloPants · 09/10/2016 09:51

My DD1 was allergic to milk and it was evident while she was still just on breastmilk as cows milk protein from my diet crossed to her.

Unrefined fruit sugar isn't less fattening than sugar added to yogurt gram for gram.

You're coming across as a bit of a foodzilla. Not sure why you are asking AIBU because you've clearly decided YANBU. The rest of the world wrong, you are right.

OP is hilarious.
My kids are no stranger to a fish finger but if you're going to start pontificating about '[our] attitudes to food' you'd damn well better be feeding your child home grown sugar free, processed free, artificial nothing boiled butternut squash, not starting your post with I give her sugar purée and a jar.

OP: AIBU?
Every poster : Yes
OP: No I'm not

Why bother posting in AIBU?

(FWIW yes I think YABU. When I weaned DS I kept a careful log of each new food as it was introduced in case of intolerances. Lasted a week. He's 2 1/2 now and is currently eating a pain au chocolatefor breakfast as he's full of a cold it's the only thing I can convince him to eat.)

If she was lactose intolerant you'd know. You'd had have to exclude it from your diet as it is in BM.

Report
AJMcF · 09/10/2016 09:57

OP, I also think YABU.

As many have said, you would have known if your LO was lactose intolerant. Both my DC are allergic to diary and I had to have a restricted diet when BF.

Were you asked by the nursery about any allergies when filling in the registration forms?

To be honest, if your LO was intolerant they would have been screaming eating the food so I am certain nursery would have stopped. They are also trained in spotting allergic reactions/have protocols when these things happen.

I understand it is difficult to leave your baby, we have all been there. Just remember all the reason so why you choose this nursery and trust them to take care of your LO.
