To be fed up of comparisons with 1930s Germany in U.K. politics?

jessica29054 · 05/10/2016 19:48

Surely a better and far less potentially offensive comparison is the 1980s?

Labour in disarray, therefore weak opposition, and a female PM of course.

Comparisons with the rise of the extreme far right in Germany have little place. The BNP are the equivalent to Hitler and his party and thankfully have little mainstream support.

I understand that a majority voted to leave the EU in June , but what I am trying to fathom out is how 17 odd million ( round up to 18 if you want ) get to be a majority . There are 65 plus million people living in the UK , 46 million of those where eligible to vote during the referendum , 17 million voted to leave . The goverment is progressing with something that will almost certainly effect the lives of everyone living here based on what a minority wanted ?

EllyMayClampett · 09/10/2016 13:27

By that logic frumpet the government would never do anything. There would never nr any change. We would be a society set in aspic.

Turn out for referendum was massive. Even fewer voters actively chose to stay in the EU.

Smirnoffka · 09/10/2016 13:28

There are thousands in prisons too. I wonder how most of them would have voted?

WidowWadman · 09/10/2016 13:30

Funny how history gets rewritten. 72.7% is by no definition "massive". A 52/48 split is not decisive.

MargoReadbetter · 09/10/2016 13:37

the lists don't be disingenuous. The lists were mentioned of foreign workers employed by firms. Not to organise extra English lesson or funding but as a "nudge" to the firm to employ more homegrown. See Amber Rudd's speech.

The LSE academics barred from advising on Brexit. Bullshit about security concerns and clearance. Making it up as you go along.

Patriotism? Oh please fuck off. If intelligent people need to shut up and put up then fuck patriotism. Little Englanders fill your boots.

smallfox2002 · 09/10/2016 13:37

History is certainly being rewritten, all the talk of the population voting overwhelmingly leave the EU is utterly incorrect.

MargoReadbetter · 09/10/2016 13:39

WTF are you going on about the Census.

Let me find Amber Rudd "don't call me racist"'s speech. She is very clear it's not a Census, it's to discourage firms employing non-Bruts.

Haunter · 09/10/2016 13:40

Historically 72% is a massive turnout. And yes 52% is decisive seeing are we are leaving the EU based on it.

Smirnoffka · 09/10/2016 13:46

it's to discourage firms employing non-Bruts.

If you think the above is wrong, then so is firms advertising work for coach drivers, construction, haulage ONLY in Poland and other EU for the UK. Blue-collar agencies are notorius for doing this, UK job seekers don't even get a look in.

MargoReadbetter · 09/10/2016 13:48

Link for evidence Smirnoffka?

smallfox2002 · 09/10/2016 13:48

Funny that it's been repeatedly proved that immigration doesn't cause unemployment amongst British nationals then.

TheElementsSong · 09/10/2016 13:50

yet an Asian woman on this thread who posted about her daughter's experiences was shouted down and called liar

Please do link me to these posts as I think they may have been from before I posted on this thread and I will certainly condemn such behaviour. It's definitely Not On to accuse PP of lying about personal experiences.

Smirnoffka · 09/10/2016 13:54

Margo You cannot be serious, surely? You hv not heard of this practice, come on. I've known about it since 2009. Here is something.

www.express.co.uk/news/uk/612310/British-recruiters-advertise-jobs-abroad-Polish-workers

www.gov.uk/government/consultations/recruitment-sector-prohibiting-the-advertising-of-jobs-exclusively-in-other-eea-countries

Before 2005 two local builders to me used to fly to Poland to interview and select men according to trade. They do not need to do that now, because there are many EU choose from already in UK.

www.theguardian.com/uk-news/2016/oct/09/plan-to-force-firms-to-reveal-foreign-staff-numbers-abandoned

So the name and shame of foreigner lists has been dropped. But it never was intended in the first place, eh, BillSykesDog & acolytes? It was just Census and we were shrieking. Quickly, brush it under the carpet. Or to keep to your style, "explain" at great length why you didn't say what you did.

Smirnoffka · 09/10/2016 13:56

MargoReadbetter · 09/10/2016 13:57

Smirnoffka so your hard data is 10 years old? That's a bit scaremongering and shrieking isn't it?

Smirnoffka · 09/10/2016 14:06

Margo The links are not 10 yrs old - they are 1 or 2 yrs old. I know a lot of Polish people and that's how I knew of the practice. There were a few articles in the papers about the practice when it was exposed, so it's not as if this is a revelation, except to you.

CeciledeVolanges · 09/10/2016 14:11

It's 36% of the population. That isn't massive.

BillSykesDog · 09/10/2016 14:13

So the name and shame of foreigner lists has been dropped. But it never was intended in the first place, eh, BillSykesDog & acolytes? It was just Census and we were shrieking. Quickly, brush it under the carpet. Or to keep to your style, "explain" at great length why you didn't say what you did.

Can you cut and paste please where I said that the plan for lists of foreign workers wasn't going to take place? I don't have to explain at great length, I can simply truthfully say that I did not say it. You're lying.

And yes, I might reply at length, but so many people are replying with misleading claims or lies that I have a lot to reply to!

You're also conflating the school's census with the lists of foreign workers and seem to be rather muddled. What was actually disputed was that either of these things was intended to round up foreigners, deport them etc.

Back that up. Where did I (or anyone else for that matter) say it wasn't going to happen? You can't and you won't because you're lying.

MargoReadbetter · 09/10/2016 14:13

Smirnoffka - one link was to the Express. Interviewed a UKIP counsellor. Great. The other was a consultation document. I had a look but could not find any background info regarding the scale of the problem. Also, that was supposed to have become regulation by now, has it?

smallfox2002 · 09/10/2016 14:16

Smirnoff..immigration doesn't cause unemployment of British nationals.

Often these recruitment programmes happen when there have been vacancies for a long time. One bus company in the North East recruited from the EU because they hadn't had enough applicants for vacancies for years.

MargoReadbetter · 09/10/2016 14:16

Wow, I'm devastated, but I won't go through you bile, BillSykesDog as it doesn't bring me any pleasure. You have said it as have your acolytes and to say otherwise is lying. There.

EllyMayClampett · 09/10/2016 14:17

72.2% is higher than any general election turnout in over 20 years. It's hardly comparable to the introduction of PCCs in 2012 which had a voter turnout of 18.5%. In modern politics, 72.2% is massive.

MargoReadbetter · 09/10/2016 14:21

Hefner in the telegraph likens May's speech with Enoch Powell and finds comfort in that. That's a bit frightening, isn't it?
