To be fed up of comparisons with 1930s Germany in U.K. politics?

jessica29054 · 05/10/2016 19:48

Surely a better and far less potentially offensive comparison is the 1980s?

Labour in disarray, therefore weak opposition, and a female PM of course.

Comparisons with the rise of the extreme far right in Germany have little place. The BNP are the equivalent to Hitler and his party and thankfully have little mainstream support.

I was very anti-independence in 2014 but right now I would move to an independent Scotland in a heartbeat. A genuinely left-wing government in power who actually care about their citizens is something I dream about.

Other than that, Ireland. I have just sent off my forms to get an Irish passport (I have Irish Citizenship through my mum, who was born there but also my Irish grandparents). It's not perfect but far better than the shit show going on here.

MaudGonneMad · 06/10/2016 11:53

Come on, Piglet, the rightist media did the exact same thing with Ed M. Made him seem 'unelectable' by relentless negative coverage as well.

MaudGonneMad · 06/10/2016 11:54

It's an easier task with Corbyn/McDonnell in many ways, tbf.

BillSykesDog · 06/10/2016 11:55

If anything in the world closely resembles facism at the moment it's Islamism and Salafist and Wahhabi ideologies which are spreading unchecked because exactly the sort of people who have their knickers in a twist about the Tories and UKIP will meekly accept all sorts of human rights abuses and oppression as long as the person doing it has a brown face and commits them under the guise of religion.

If you think we have problems here I suggest you read up on the problems Christians face across the world where they are widely and bloodily persecuted along with local minorities like the Yazidi because they happen to be a religious minority much like the Jews. And of course antsemitism is rife and socially acceptable in these countries too. Ditto persecution of gay people and dissidents. Already happening widely in Muslim countries.

I can't really take people seriously when they try and claim Teresa May is the new Hitler but don't make a peep about places where this is already happening because it's a bit inconvenient in terms of undermining their worldview.

Wearedoomed17 · 06/10/2016 11:56

Yes Nakatomi if you really think Corbyn is electable then you seriously need to get your head out of the sand and out of the history books.

He isn't. He really really isn't.

Where will you emigrate to?

Hirosleaftunnel · 06/10/2016 12:00

Ireland? Really? Are you independently wealthy then? Thousands of Irish people are in Asia working because they can't get jobs at home. Good luck to you, definitely a better option than Scotland.

Wearedoomed17 · 06/10/2016 12:01

Bill

Excellent post.

Wearedoomed17 · 06/10/2016 12:03

maud Haigue. IDS, they weren't up to the job either and had equally bad press.

Nakatomi · 06/10/2016 12:07

Ding ding ding, well done BillSykesDog you win racist post of the day!

Nobody has said they support the human rights abuses of some muslim countries and skin colour has no issue with this.

What we're fighting against is the country being changed before our very eyes and having all of our freedoms taken away from us if we don't fit the ideology. You know, the exact thing you deluded Ukippers were saying would happen, but from the muslim community? Funny how you're quiet about it when the people taking away your freedoms are white.

Fawful · 06/10/2016 12:10

The similarity is that a group of people (Jews then, immigrants now) are being blamed for the unease people are feeling about living in a certain climate. In the case of the U.K. I would argue the experience of unease is whipped up by newspapers to sell copies and by politicians to get elected, rather than real. They could turn their attentions to other causes instead but they chose to get people worked up about 'others' , & I think it's right to not accept that.
Re: Isis: obviously they are a worry too, there's plenty to worry about.

EnthusiasmDisturbed · 06/10/2016 12:10

Nakatomi maybe you are not aware of Corbyn's history or maybe you do not think it matters it does matter and will matter when we have a general election - do you really think people will not be bother by the following:

that he opposed peace talks between the government and Sinn Fein as he believed in the united Ireland and supported IRA terrorists that killed British troops

that he has welcomed with open arms Islamic terrorist supporters to the HOP and shared platform with them

that he held a meeting with Gerry Adams at the HOP a few weeks after the IRA Brighton Bombing the intention of this bomb was to kill the people who had been voted in to lead our country if successful our democracy would have been destroyed our history would be very different. Kinnock and other MP's demanded he cancel the meeting if anything out of respect he didn't think that was necessary

of course this now the story has changed and it was all about him working towards a peaceful outcome his pr team are good but not that good too many photos and videos around to show people the truth

no one with that history will be PM of this country

Hirosleaftunnel · 06/10/2016 12:11

They aren't taking away your freedoms FGS! They can't. The parliamentary process prevents that from happening. That is what makes Britain so amazing and why a Civil War was fought.

Nakatomi · 06/10/2016 12:16

Hirosleaftunnel

They are literally ripping up the European Human Rights convention to have a "British Bill of Rights" and we have no idea of its contents.

They want to remove the right for Soldiers to be prosecuted for war crimes, which means they basically have carte blanche to do what they want.

The snoopers' charter is going to make it compulsory that your ISP hosts data logs on you for a set amount of time, and they can be accessed at any time by government agencies.

There are going to be requirements that all foreign workers are kept on a database along with lots of private details. Some of the lists will become public, denying the people privacy.

Already there is a census for schools where parents have to list the nationality of their children.

Oh and they're allowing more schools to have cadet units, which is basically just setting up a recruitment station at schools.

Sorry, but all of those are things I never thought we'd see in 21st century Britain.

EnthusiasmDisturbed · 06/10/2016 12:20

If anything in the world closely resembles facism at the moment it's Islamism and Salafist and Wahhabi ideologies which are spreading unchecked

I agree that it is very worrying that we have turned a blind eye to the spread of ideologies that are hateful towards anyone that isn't muslim, woman and to western values - but as long as we have religious freedom what does it matter Hmm

no one is saying that the rise of the right isn't worrying and that it must be dealt with but with less drama

Fawful · 06/10/2016 12:24

'They aren't taking away your freedoms FGS! They can't. '

They can and will do exactly what they think they need to do to appeal to British voters. If that involves counting us and naming and shaming our employers, they'll start with that.

Wearedoomed17 · 06/10/2016 12:25

dingdong well done nakatomi you pull the racist card and hope to shut down debate.

And you call others a threat to freedom and democracy.

Laughable.

Nakatomi · 06/10/2016 12:29

Wearedoomed17

I'm not trying to shut down debate. But this thread absolutely had nothing to do with Muslim people or religion, and BillSykes made it about that. What s/he said was racist - that Muslim ideology needs to be stopped etc.

The majority of muslims are not ISIS. For what it's worth, I agree ISIS need to be dealt with and so does radicalisation but, right now, it's slightly more important to deal with the fact that we are soon going to be living in an Orwellian nightmare.

Wearedoomed17 · 06/10/2016 12:30

cadet units in school really so Theresa want to start a kind of May youth movement? Smile

And nowhere have they said soldiers won't be prosecuted for war crimes. There have been literally thousands of claims lodged by dodgy money grabbing lawyers which have proved to be without foundation. They are just deposing up the process to ensure its fair to all sides.

Surely if your dh is in the navy you will understand this?

PigletWasPoohsFriend · 06/10/2016 12:30

Nakatomi

How about you actually wait to see what the policy is for all of this before you jump on all the headlines. accept that doesn't suit your agenda

Soulders for example have been subjected to bogus claims. Or is that OK by you? She hasn't said they will never be prosecuted for war crimes.

PigletWasPoohsFriend · 06/10/2016 12:31

Oh and they're allowing more schools to have cadet units, which is basically just setting up a recruitment station at schools

What are you seriously suggesting?

SukeyTakeItOffAgain · 06/10/2016 12:38

Ding ding ding, well done BillSykesDog you win racist post of the day!

No she doesn't. What nonsense. Islam isn't a race, it's a religion.

I don't see this parallel in the UK specifically - I see it in the world as a whole. Polarisation of political opinion is one of the ways in which the start of the problem manifests itself.

People are saying it's not a thing at the moment don't know much about 20th century history. The PP who mentioned that the current climate doesn't so much specifically resemble Germany post 1933 as Europe from the mid 20s has it right. Mussolini was in power from 1922. That was only 4 years after the end of WWI. It was a very long process.

Wearedoomed17 · 06/10/2016 12:41

What did she say that was racist?

Muslim countries discriminate against gays and women? Yes

Christian's and Jews are discriminated against in some Muslim countries,? yes

Pernicious extremist versions of Islamist, salafist and Wahhabi preach against tolerance and equality? Yes

Of course all religions are mysogynistic and controlling by nature but only in this country coukd you hear that old idiot the former Archbishop of Canterbury support Sharia law so kangaroo courts designed to discriminate against women.

Corbyn who you do admire supported the terrorist IRA and thinks Palestinian terrorists are justified.

If you are so concerned that May is the reincarnation of Adolph maybe also you should be a tad more scared of Jeremy.

Wearedoomed17 · 06/10/2016 12:42

And yes religion is a life style choice, race isn't.

icanteven · 06/10/2016 12:43

Will I, if I want to change jobs, be hired if employing foreign workers is a negative? Will it be penalised, or will there be quotas?

I think that whatever the DM likes to say about it, employers are still practical people, and will hire the candidate most qualified for the job, whatever May has to say in her conference speeches. If I need the best tech industry marketing guru around, or the best doctor, or the best long distance truck driver and Mary Smith, Siobhain McCarthy, Pavel Novak, and Li Han all apply for the job, I'm going to pick the best person, not Mary Smith, because the the others are all damn forriners. I will hire the person I want.

Besides, if May wants British businesses to hire British workers (and who says that Siobhain, Pavel and Li aren't all British-born citizens anyway?) then she might have to start investing in training for young British people. Does she think that hospitals are turning away hordes of highly qualified ethnically British doctors and nurses, and just hiring from overseas for the feck of it?

Wearedoomed17 · 06/10/2016 12:45

And last time they voted Scotland stayed in the UK. There is no independent Scotland so how could you move there?
