to be impressed with Theresa May?

I'm a traditional Labour voter who feels alienated by the party and Corbyn.

Theresa May really seems like a breath of fresh air in listening to peoples concerns and understanding what matters to ordinary voters.

I know words are easy to say and the proof will be in the action she takes in the years to come but I have a good feeling about her.

because my son despite being born in Britain and feeling half British only has a French passport due to a change in the law.

"And what about those who are afraid that their children are going to get beaten up because they have the wrong colour skin or a foreign-sounding surname? Are they somehow not people? Or are their worries not real worries?

Not everyone who is concerned about immigration is a racist thug."

I never claimed they were. But I think you would have to be very naïve not to believe that the compulsory keeping of lists of foreigners is not going to result in more hate crimes.

stubbornstains · 05/10/2016 15:38

Again totally ignoring and minimising the racist sexist attitudes within the Labour Party. Oh dear we are in a mess

I'm certainly not ignoring and minimising racist sexist attitudes within the Labour Party.....I'm just yet to find any evidence of them existing! But maybe I'm just naive or ignorant, eh? In which case, please do enlighten me by providing some solid evidence of them Smile..

NobleKnickerNibbler · 05/10/2016 15:38

One of the reasons I voted to leave is because of the rise of the far right in Europe...who wants to be aligned to that?

So you voted to be in line with the far right in the UK..........

formerbabe · 05/10/2016 15:40

So you voted to be in line with the far right in the UK..........

Don't be so ridiculous. There are plenty of reasons to vote to leave the EU that have nothing to do with immigration.

NobleKnickerNibbler · 05/10/2016 15:42

What I'm saying is, you claim to be horrified by the rise of the far right in Europe but you're happy to further their advance in the UK. Because that's what happening, the UK is becoming more right wing.

OldFarticus · 05/10/2016 15:45

Or to be a member of a mixed family and have good grounds to suspect that this attitude is spreading throughout Europe and that very shortly there will be nowhere where you and your family will not be treated as parasites?

See, we're a mixed family. Some of our friends/family are also mixed, others come from one or other of our backgrounds. We all rub along well. I simply don't see any evidence of this kind of racism happening in our little part of the UK (which despite being thoroughly blue every election night is mainly decent, tolerant people). DH is an immigrant and he is in favour of immigration controls, simply because it makes sense to bring in the people we need (irrespective of where they are from). His reason for voting Brexit was that EU doctors were not subject to the same kind of scrutiny he was during medical training (even where their clinical skills and/or English was poor) simply because he was non-EU.

It's much more nuanced that simply "Tories in, hard Brexit, forriners out".

MetalMidget · 05/10/2016 15:46

I'm not sure I can say what I think about Theresa May without Godwinning.

I'm on maternity leave at the moment, but I'd love to know how the Johnny Foreigner list for workplaces proposal has gone down - I've got two EU colleagues, one of whom is a director of the company!

Theresa May comes across very well, says the right things... until it comes to actually looking at her policies, which are classic 'nasty party'.

formerbabe · 05/10/2016 15:48

My point was that politicians have caused that by refusing to acknowledge anyone's concerns about an open border policy. People got angry. This is the result.

CousinCharlotte · 05/10/2016 15:50

Impressed No
Scared Yes

NobleKnickerNibbler · 05/10/2016 15:50

Yes. This is the result.

How sad for the UK.

NobleKnickerNibbler · 05/10/2016 15:51

Companies publishing details on the amount of foreign workers they employ. Ugh, ugh, and ugh again.

Pettywoman · 05/10/2016 15:52

She has nice clothes, that's about all the nice things I can say about her.

Her policies are downright frightening.

RortyCrankle · 05/10/2016 15:55

I am a Tory and wasn't initially convinced that she was right for PM but I've changed my mind. Despite being a Remainer she has pledged to see Brexit through to completion which is excellent news. Her speech was good and we now have to give her time to come up with the goods.

I think she's got balls (women's of course) and if she can be half as good as Margaret Thatcher (frothing at the mouth yet lefties?) then she will do very well indeed.

I would like to see her call an election soon and increase the Government's majority but if not it can wait for 2020.

Realhousewivesofshit · 05/10/2016 15:55

It's not in the least like the 70s! If you think that you don't remember the 70s.

It's much more like the 80s where labour imploded and the tories went on and on and on!

DiegeticMuch · 05/10/2016 16:01

She's impressive and inspires confidence.

LurkingHusband · 05/10/2016 16:01

Companies publishing details on the amount of foreign workers they employ. Ugh, ugh, and ugh again.

Of course, politicians always wanting to set an example, could start with how many foreign MPs there are in the house of commons ...

Guitargirl · 05/10/2016 16:02

Marine Le Pen has come out in support of May's comments yesterday about being a citizen of the world = a citizen of nowhere. Says it all really.

It's so depressing. I am not whipping myself into a frenzy as suggested by a pp. I am depressed by it. And afraid.

formerbabe · 05/10/2016 16:05

the UK is becoming more right wing

Yes but compared with the rest of Europe (which everyone is apparently so keen to be entwined with) I still believe we are one of the most tolerant countries. Look at how many Eastern Europeans reacted to Syrian refugees entering their country.

NobleKnickerNibbler · 05/10/2016 16:06

Yeah, let's see how long the tolerance lasts.

LurkingHusband · 05/10/2016 16:06

Remind me again, how many we let in compared to them ?

LadyConstanceDeCoverlet · 05/10/2016 16:09

YABVU. Have you seen her proposals to privatise child social care and protection, and allow councils to opt out of their duties in that respect?

www.mumsnet.com/Talk/am_i_being_unreasonable/2748120-Councils-to-be-allowed-to-opt-out-of-child-protection-laws

I think she seriously wants to take us back to the 1920s or even further in terms of welfare, social care and child protection.

Realhousewivesofshit · 05/10/2016 16:10

Guitar girl I sgree it is depressing and scary.

Labour could be a really affective opposition and help control the government but that's not going yo happen under corbyn.

It's truly a sad sad time for labour and it never ceases to amaze me how out of touch with the general population mumsnet can be.

seminakedinsomebodyelsesroom · 05/10/2016 16:10

There is a tendency towards nasty right-wing excess in the Tory party

They ARE a right wing party Hmm

bertsdinner · 05/10/2016 16:10

I quite like her, I like her more than dithery old school tie Cameron.
Liking Ruth Davidson.
This does remind me a bit of the 80s, Tories in power, Labour nowhere and dealing with "Militant".
