to be impressed with Theresa May?

I'm a traditional Labour voter who feels alienated by the party and Corbyn.

Theresa May really seems like a breath of fresh air in listening to peoples concerns and understanding what matters to ordinary voters.

I know words are easy to say and the proof will be in the action she takes in the years to come but I have a good feeling about her.

If only it was hyperbole! I would dearly love it to be all puff and bluster. I cannot tell you how gutted I am that Corbyn is back. Something is broken in Labour party. But on the other hand, apparently he's a Leaver in Remainer clothes, so maybe there was method in their madness. Who knows. I'm pissing myself off now. Back to work before I lose my job, just to cap off 2016 nicely.

stubbornstains · 05/10/2016 14:44

realhousewives Oh really? How have Jewish Labour Party members been targeted and bullied? I'd be really keen if you could provide some concrete examples here, as I looked into it as hard as I could when it first blew up, and couldn't find any credible reports of antisemitism at all (although there seemed to be quite a few journalists going "Look at all these antisemites, criticising the policies of the Israeli State! That's anti semitic, that is!"

As a contrast, I just happen to be reading Schindler's Ark ATM. And it's all this talk of lists of foreigners and scrutinising employers to make sure their workforce is Aryan British enough that I'm finding so horribly chilling in that context.

"The mistake so many politicians made was to ignore people's concerns over immigration and dismiss them as racist. They cannot carry on ignoring people and their worries."

And what about those who are afraid that their children are going to get beaten up because they have the wrong colour skin or a foreign-sounding surname? Are they somehow not people? Or are their worries not real worries?

Bertrand. You won't be suprised to hear i loved the bit about grammar schools !

I think she 'ACED' the speech though i and my family are probably the target market . Lifelong Conservative voting 'Brexiters' grammar school and University educated professionals or business owners (exception being me apart from Brexit).

The truth is we need a competent and relevant opposition and that should be led by Frank Field and Liz Kendall . This is if the Labour party have any ambition of connecting with the mainstream voting public.

corythatwas · 05/10/2016 14:56

I fully understand frustration and anger at an ineffective leader- you won't find me cheering Jeremy Corbyn.

But what I cannot understand is the mentality that admires a strong leader simply because s/he is a strong leader. Isn't a leader there to lead you somewhere? Doesn't it matter where they lead you?

Witchend · 05/10/2016 14:59

I think the problem is that most, if not all, people who would like to be Prime Minister are not actually suitable.
I think similar about American Presidents.

Whatslovegottodo · 05/10/2016 15:06

Horrendous. She is trying to come a
The abolishing the human rights act is appalling as is making soldiers exempt from laws Shock.
Introducing grammar schools is regressive and hardly the way forward to stigmatise children at 10 years old.
She will say whatever she likes to further her career. She was all for remain when that was the party line and now she is demanding a hard brexit.
Her voting history is more than a little concerning she was in favour of the Iraq war and votes against laws for equality and human rights.
I think she may prove a wolf in sheeps clothing. I hope to be proved incorrect.

ooonatoffolo · 05/10/2016 15:07

Bertrand

""I liked the fact she laughed at Boris"

What, the man she appointed to be Foreign Secretary? "

Yes, exactly. It shows she either has a sense of humour, doesn't give a fart what 'forriners' think of us, or both.

After all, he is a man who, despite an extremely expensive education, thinks Africa is a 'country'.

TM making him FS is priceless. Perhaps not in a good way.

NobleKnickerNibbler · 05/10/2016 15:08

making soldiers exempt from law

Come now. What's wrong with the odd war crime here and there.

ChasingPavements · 05/10/2016 15:12

YABU to be impressed by May. She might be able to deliver a speech,, but when I listen to the actual content, I am horrified. Since June, I appear to be living in a parallel universe, where we not only seem intent to go back to the 70s, but to the 30s as well.

The xenophobic rhetoric of the country - the politicians, the media, the people - is utterly appalling. Where people are no longer treated as individuals, and valued for their individual contributions, but targeted, judged and vilified for their race, nationality or beliefs. It truly sickens me. I am scared of what this nation is becoming.

The Tories are morphing into UKIP and May's 'Brexit means Brexit' mantra is turning into a terrifying reality.

Oblomov16 · 05/10/2016 15:13

I'm becoming less and less impressed. And I was a floating voter to start!
Her speech today is a load of bland old spiel about how we want people to better themselves and reach the highest achievable that they can - bollocks of nothing. What does it even mean? Cut the bullshit and give us something concrete and tangible.

She's so middle of the road nothingness, that it's just dire.

Oblomov16 · 05/10/2016 15:15

Is she really listening to the voters?
She's got us all wrong, hasn't she? She clearly doesn't have a clue what most of us want.

PigletWasPoohsFriend · 05/10/2016 15:17

Her speech today is a load of bland old spiel

As was Corbyn's last week before he went AWOL

They are all as bad as each other at the moment.

Realhousewivesofshit · 05/10/2016 15:17

Again totally ignoring and minimising the racist sexist attitudes within the Labour Party. Oh dear we are in a mess.

Are the posters hysterically whipping themselves into a frenzy and railing against the Tory party are the same as those supporting Corbyn?

If so you are the ones to blame for labour being once again unelectable and so allowing the tories to run and run for decades to come or until he's decemated at the next election.

You just can't or won't see it will you.

Look closer to home and sort that shit out and then maybe the Tories can be restrained.

derxa · 05/10/2016 15:17

It was all about England. Grammar schools are irrelevant in Scotland for instance. In fact the whole thing is very Little Englander. To compare Theresa May to Hitler is bonkers though.

derxa · 05/10/2016 15:20

where we not only seem intent to go back to the 70s The most evil decade in history. At least we didn't have the Kardahians and our teeth were lovely and crooked.

Oblomov16 · 05/10/2016 15:22

If you had to vote tomorrow, who would you choose? Her? Labour? None of them?
I seriously couldn't vote for any of them. They are all awful.

OldFarticus · 05/10/2016 15:23

I think she 'ACED' the speech though i and my family are probably the target market . Lifelong Conservative voting 'Brexiters' grammar school and University educated professionals or business owners

Yes that pretty much describes us as well. I think she is a very safe pair of hands - admittedly, I am a lifelong Tory voter anyway despite my forrin husband who is apparently going to be kicked out of the NHS but Cameron just didn't have the balls for the job. As a woman, I felt proud listening to May's speech. When Harman or Diane Abbott or one of the other "Jezzerbelles" opens their mouth, I usually wince and wish with all my heart they would STFU.

However, I dearly wish Labour would sort itself out. There is a tendency towards nasty right-wing excess in the Tory party that and the best way to balance that is by a credible and effective opposition. Corbyn's Labour is neither.

PlayOnWurtz · 05/10/2016 15:24

I think she's ace. Yanbu op

gillybeanz · 05/10/2016 15:26

Chasing

it has always been like this, I'm 50 and it's been the same throughout my life and I find previous to this it was.
The only difference is now there is more media, constantly 24/7 and also people who have been hushed more recently in the name of political correctness, so it didn't appear to be an issue. people still thought the same but were afraid to voice their thoughts. Now it seems like we have some freedom of speech returning, which is good.
At least now there is no hiding the truth, we know how the majority feel and whether we as individuals agree with it or not doesn't matter.

LurkingHusband · 05/10/2016 15:26

Seems the 70s revival continues apace ...

newsthump.com/2016/10/05/theresa-may-to-announce-major-investment-in-white-dog-poo-betamax-and-beige/

Theresa May will use today’s Conservative Party conference speech to unveil plans for white dog poo, Betamax and beige that works for everyone, not just the few.

With the UK abandoning any pretence of looking forwards, Mrs May will announce major reinvestments in things you don’t see anymore.

In a withering attack on the future, the prime minister will say: “I want a Britain where white dog poo can be found in every park and play area. A Britain where pornographic magazines lay discarded in hedgerows. A Britain that views boil-in-the-bag cod in parsley sauce as a miracle of modern science.”

The Conservative Party’s director of communications Jim Davidson said the prime minister’s speech will herald the beginning of a “beige new world”.

“If you can’t listen to the prime minister’s speech live then get someone to record it by placing a cassette recorder in front of the wireless,” he said.

“For those that don’t have a cassette recorder, full details of the speech will be available on Ceefax.”

Bitlost · 05/10/2016 15:33

I'm a Tory and I think she's vile, small minded and listening to just one side of the population.

She's going to turn us into a boring little island.

formerbabe · 05/10/2016 15:35

And what about those who are afraid that their children are going to get beaten up because they have the wrong colour skin or a foreign-sounding surname? Are they somehow not people? Or are their worries not real worries?

Not everyone who is concerned about immigration is a racist thug. One of the reasons I voted to leave is because of the rise of the far right in Europe...who wants to be aligned to that? Not to mention the fact that open borders with Europe means those outside of Europe who wish to come to the UK find it harder. I find the idea of open borders with Europe but not the rest of the world extremely discriminatory.

Have you ever reflected what it might be like to be a child whose teacher no longer feels restrained by political correctness avoid classroom rants about how people like him or his parents should be kicked out of the UK?

Or to be attacked and beaten on the street in the country where you have lived and contributed for many years because suddenly there is no shame in showing that you hate foreigners?

Or to be a member of a mixed family and have good grounds to suspect that this attitude is spreading throughout Europe and that very shortly there will be nowhere where you and your family will not be treated as parasites?

Freedom of speech means that you should be able to voice your opinions without being imprisoned or persecuted by the authorities. It does not mean that there should be no social restraints on what you can say and still be considered a decent member of society.
