I'm a traditional Labour voter who feels alienated by the party and Corbyn.

Theresa May really seems like a breath of fresh air in listening to peoples concerns and understanding what matters to ordinary voters.

I know words are easy to say and the proof will be in the action she takes in the years to come but I have a good feeling about her.

Biscuit again !
the level of debate on mn is sometimes faintly ridiculous and bordering on the childish.
comparisons to Nazi Germany - really Angry

Sorry to say it, but I agree with the PP who said this is how the Nazis started. Yes, the Tories probably aren't going to start rounding up foreigners and putting them in camps but it's a slippery slope. Precedence will allow a future more right wing government to go even further than keeping lists.

I can't believe they're doing this, to be honest, it's like the very worst of the BNP, not a mainstream political party in 2016.

Peregrina · 05/10/2016 18:58

comparisons to Nazi Germany

Oh yes, really. This is exactly how it started. And peopled didn't believe that a civilised, well educated society could behave like that. Until it was too late. We have the benefit of history, having seen it happen once before.

Piglet has pretty much written my response for me. Do you seriously believe it's acceptable for the Leader of the Opposition to scurry off on holiday knowing Theresa May was going to be making an important speech at her first Conference as PM? In his position I would be poised to reply in full, not tweet a two line soundbite. It's obvious there is no Opposition with him as leader and even as a Tory I don't think that's good for the country.

Anyway it's pointless arguing, Right and Left will never understand each other. Although I must admit to being puzzled as to why, even though I dislike Labour and all it stands for, I would never feel the need to call it or its supporters the vile names directed at Conservatives which I have seen countless times on here (not just on this thread) over the years from Labour supporters. I won't share my thoughts on possible reasons as don't want to be accused of being mean to you all Smile

The reason Tories get called names is because their entire party is based on the "I'm alright Jack attitude."

In general, people with liberal politics tend to care more about society as a whole and people in general. Personally, if I had one pie and my neighbours were starving, I would share it with them. The Tory mindset is "well if they'd have worked harder, they could have their own pie!"

PigletWasPoohsFriend · 05/10/2016 19:06

Yes - really.

Well McCDonnell was wafting about Mao, Red Book last year.

Both parties need to take a good hard look at themselves tbh.

SeekEveryEveryKnownHidingPlace · 05/10/2016 19:06

She has just legitimated flag waving jingoism and said anyone who thinks anything is racist is just being a 'liberal elite' fool. We know she's all about elitism what with the fucking grammar schools, so I can only assume she's equally confused about the word 'liberal'. What a depressing day.

EllyMayClampett · 05/10/2016 19:06

Listening to radio4, I heard Danny Finklestien identify himself as a liberal, and go on to say that everyone has to accept that control over immigration is the middle ground.

Not sure I would consider him a liberal, but I do think he has correctly assessed the state of politics and the national mood at the moment.

I cannot comment on the lists if foreigners. I heard nothing about it on the radio. I did catch something about companies having to give numbers of foreign workers, but no names or lists.

PlayOnWurtz · 05/10/2016 19:08

It's not an alright jack attitude it's a celebrating hard work and getting people who can support themselves to do so and leave the limited funds for those who need it most.

Adelie0404 · 05/10/2016 19:08

I cannot admire a single thing she has ever done. I vehemently dislike everything, but that's true for virtually everything tories do. The poor, children, the NHS , local government, education, social care - free-market ideology is so wrong....
I work with so many "foreigners" in the NHS who are dedicated, hard-working and just excellent and i am dismayed by the words I hear from the government and on here.
(I am well-off and it's not about me).

Londonista · 05/10/2016 19:08

Seek - with you there.

And since when has Brexit been equal to being patriotic?? What a load of old tosh she's peddling. It would be funny if it wasn't so dangerous.

papayasareyum · 05/10/2016 19:10

Yes, that's right. Theresa May is just like Hitler HmmHmmHmm

PigletWasPoohsFriend · 05/10/2016 19:12

Again complete stereotyping.

Until yesterday I was a member of the Labour party. During my time there I have met some if the most selfish people around.

My old boss was one of the kindest. A Tory through and through.

Londonista · 05/10/2016 19:13

Where did I say that? I was comparing the rhetoric of this govt to that of Nazi Germany, which is indisputable fact. Do you need the Wikipedia links?

EnthusiasmDisturbed · 05/10/2016 19:13

Oh please not another speech how many times did James O'Brien mange to inform you in his speech he is full of empathy, a liberal who loves everyone

Successive governments have underestimate the number of people coming here year after year. Having a better idea and what areas of business employ high numbers of migrant workers isn't a bad thing and why should we allow business to exploit low earners and keep the wages low

Immigration and migration needs to be addressed and changes need to be made

Labour made the mistake of ignoring this (which they acknowledge) and so did the coalition

Londonista · 05/10/2016 19:15

Why has unemployment been falling if immigration is out of control?

Londonista · 05/10/2016 19:18

Do you need time to build that straw man?

Nakatomi · 05/10/2016 19:18

So presumably foreigners, people living on the breadline and disabled people should be left to rot then?

Some of the hardest working people are living hand to mouth. They are being destroyed by the government who is telling them they're not working hard enough. Sorry, but that's not right. It absolutely is an "I'm alright Jack" attitude - the government are taking £30 a week from disabled people in April. How is that helping?

The Tories are encouraging a world where it's OK to care only about yourself.

RortyCrankle · 05/10/2016 19:21

The reason Tories get called names is because their entire party is based on the "I'm alright Jack attitude."

Ahh so that's your excuse - okaaaay. I totally disagree with your excuse, naturally. And you don't think Tories could say derogatory things about Labour and call them names if they so wished? Let's face it they have lots to choose from but they don't. So may I ask why you think its ok to be so aggressive to Tories? I am itching to tell you what I think, I am having to stop my fingers from typing ....... Grin

PlayOnWurtz · 05/10/2016 19:23

nakatomi no. That is not what I said. Those that can should so those who can't get the resources to help them

NameChanger22 · 05/10/2016 19:34

I think she's probably evil. She even looks evil, although there seems to have been some effort to soften her appearance lately. She smiles more than she used to - her evil plan must be working.

People are so easily hoodwinked.

EnthusiasmDisturbed · 05/10/2016 19:34

Are you suggesting that unemployment numbers haven't be tweaked

We have a ridiculous amount of people working and still receiving benefits and that's in full time work

But yes let's call the Tories the Nazi party that really going to help

And let's ignore that the high levels of immigration has been a growing problem in this country because by saying that some woolly liberal might call you a racist

EllyMayClampett · 05/10/2016 19:34

I am surprised that James O'Brien can conflate Hitler and Amber Rudd (and no, her speech sounded nothing like that) and still be allowed to host NewsNight. Isn't the BBC news supposed to maintain at least a fig-leaf of impartiality?

MaQueen · 05/10/2016 19:35

I'm apolitical as a rule, but I am very impressed by her so far.
