To think I have discovered an amazing new 'thing'?

Or is it already known and mainstream? I do hope it's not and I can copyright it and make my fortune.

Conditioner BEFORE Shampoo!

If done the traditional way my hair goes lank and greasy within 12 hours. Do it backwards and it's all soft and swishy and non-lardy for at least a whole day.

I am truly a genius.

Can't do it too often with thick Asian hair though - the added weight can make hair fall out. Know from bitter experience. So my frizz has to keep.

honeyroar · 03/10/2016 22:22

To those calling people gullible for using conditioner at all, read the thread! Quite a few people have pointed out that their hair is noticably worse if simply shampooed. Perhaps those "non gullible" people simply have a different type of hair?

Oh and my input - I discovered by accident, when I mixed up the little bottles in a hotel, that body lotion before shampoo leaves hair lovely and soft. Following on from that I did a bit of experimenting and found that conditioner smeared over the skin in the shower and quickly rinsed off leaves skin nice and soft too.

unlucky83 · 03/10/2016 23:31

honey you use a product that strips all the natural oils, then use one to add them back -or rather add silicones etc. I would recommend oiling hair before washing for those with dry frizzy hair -or in fact washing less often I guess also how much blow dry/straighten it etc, how many other hair products you use, how often you go swimming in chlorine will also have an effect.

But it is like the bath/shower discussion and if someone says I have eczema etc so don't shower daily someone tells them they just need to moisturise. So basically strip your skin of natural oils using harsh chemicals and then replace them with more chemicals...

Lindy63 · 04/10/2016 00:18

Omg @ 53 yrs old I accidentally used Shampoo as conditioner hence shampooing x3. My hair is amazing, manageable, unnoticeable split ends, no frizz and even some shine. It's the future x

boo2410 · 04/10/2016 04:02

I do this too with the cheap Alberto Balsam range (99p). Was sceptical but it does not

mathanxiety · 04/10/2016 04:33

I skip the shampoo altogether, using the curly girl method.

londonrach · 04/10/2016 05:16

Dont use condition so not had this problem but my hair doesnt need it. Some people hair does.

CoteDAzur · 04/10/2016 06:44

"you use a product that strips all the natural oils, then use one to add them back"

Ffs is this a problem of English comprehension? Hmm

It's been said quite a few times already that conditioner is used on the ends, not the roots of the hair, where it gets most natural-oily.

If I go for a week without a wash, natural oils make my hair pasty, heavy, smelly and turn it into one big Rasta knot. That is not at all how conditioner leaves it - light, fragrant, and untangled.

If you really think hair conditioner is no better than the natural grease that equals dirty hair, you really must change yours.

CoteDAzur · 04/10/2016 06:45

"used Shampoo as conditioner"

What does this mean?

HeCantBeSerious · 04/10/2016 08:05

If you stop washing your hair completely after a few weeks it stops being greasy. Because it's not being washed (i.e. stripped of oils) the scalp doesn't produce them so much. Shampoo lifts the cuticle of the hair (thus making it tangly) and conditioner conditioner seeks to smooth and glue it back down again (usually with silicone which will build up if not removed effectively resulting in dull hair).

unlucky83 · 04/10/2016 08:09

cote no problem with comprehension, thank you.
If you comb your hair through twice daily it won't end up in one nasty rasta knot. And you will distributing the oil down the length of your hair...as others have said stimulating your scalp makes it make more oil -stripping the oil away actually encourages your body to make more oil. Washing it as the shampoo goes down the hair will make the ends drier...so you need conditioner.
I tried the no wash method a few years ago - it was vile for a few months then actually fine - not smelly or anything. I washed it with shampoo without thinking post DD2 labour shower... and was back to stage one and I have never managed to face going through the vile stage to try it again. But it did make me realise that regularly stripping the oil does make it greasier...
My DD1 had (she has gone boy short now) very very thick, curly long hair -its mixed race hair. I was using cholesterol based conditioner on it. I started washing it less (twice a week) and using a tangle teezer on it wet - it improved 100 fold -no need for her heavy conditioner.
DD2 has long wavy hair - not quite as thick as DD1s. Washed twice a week (if she gets hot & sweaty she will wet it but not shampoo it more often) - make sure she brushes/combs it twice a day - plait it at night sometimes. However on holiday she was in the pool every day, washed every day - even plaited in the pool it was knotting really badly -I thought she would have to have it cut off but when we got home I put some oil on it before washing a few times and trimmed the ends and it is fine.
Actually thinking about it -my mum told me you couldn't wet your hair in the shower without shampooing it or it would look awful - and actually that isn't true - wonder if her belief came from some ad campaign years ago...

CoteDAzur · 04/10/2016 10:22

"cote no problem with comprehension, thank you. If you comb your hair through twice daily it won't end up in one nasty rasta knot."

I beg to differ - your insistence does seem to be an English comprehension problem since I clearly said:

Mine is a thick, very long, curly mane that naturally forms locks as it dries. I only ever comb my hair in the shower, with conditioner.

I can't comb through my hair when dry, at all, and I'm just laughing at "twice daily".

My hair looks like this but only when left to dry on its own, no combing. The few times I tried to comb it when dry, I ended up with two handfuls of lost hair and a head that looked like this.

"I tried the no wash method a few years ago - it was vile for a few months then actually fine - not smelly or anything."

Oh sure Smile I know people like you who never wash their hair. It's amazing that they think it doesn't smell or look dirty.

Carriecakes80 · 04/10/2016 10:49

Always done this, my dry hair is rubbish without conditioner, but too much makes ti too flat, reverse washing leaves my hair looking great! x

squishee · 04/10/2016 10:56

Sorry but I've been doing this for years. Gives much better results for me.

IneedAdinosaurNickname · 04/10/2016 11:02

I've been doing this for a while and my hair has never been as soft and lovely.

If I use just shampoo it's dry and brittle.
If I use conditioner first it's heavy and gets greasy much faster

itsalldyingout · 04/10/2016 13:41

Another one doing it for years - though when my hair is really unmanageable, I skip the shampoo completely. My hair is in much better condition for it (I was previously known as the woman with the Queen Mum hair).

Conditioner for shaving legs is great in theory. Not so great when OH slips in patch on shower not rinsed properly and goes down so heavily we had to have tiles re-grouted and sealed and shower cubicle re-fitted.

I've never told him I think that's why he slipped so I'm hoping he never reads this!

IceBeing · 04/10/2016 14:55

it certainly matters what sort of hair and scalp you have...and it also matters what sort of conditioner it is. There seem to be two types of 'conditioner', stuff that is supposed to chemically react with the hair and then you wash the rest out...and then stuff that you put on last and is basically a greasy coating for the hair.

If it is the first type, it probably doesn't matter when you put it on.

If you are using the second type and find it is better if you use it first then there is no point using it at all - you are washing it back out with the shampoo....although arguably you will be washing less of your own grease out if you put synthetic grease on before shampooing...so maybe in this case the solution is to skip the conditioner and use a less aggressive shampoo...apparently your hair is nicer with more of your natural oils on it!

Most people are washing their hair more often than necessary if they optimised their product usage....some people would be better off not using conditioner...some people would be better off not using shampoo.

It is always worth baring in mind that the people telling you how to have nice hair are making money out of selling you products...so they might not honestly have your best interests at heart...

FeliciaJollygoodfellow · 04/10/2016 15:24

Lols at 'brush twice daily'! Curls cannot be brushed unless wet unless you want a head full of damages frizz. How insulting to say people are gullible to use what works for their hair!

And for those of you who clearly have straight totally manageable hair, you can get many silicone and sulfaye free shampoos and conditioners, I would rather use coconut oil on its own than washing up liquid.

miaowmix · 04/10/2016 16:30

Totally agree with CoteDAzure and others here - and just lol at the beauty industry conspiracy theorists.

If you had dry, thick, wavy hair like I do, trust me you would use conditioner. And some kind of serum/finishing product. I find L'Oréal and Kerastase make the best products.

I don't comb my hair EVER, just use a wet brush on it when it's wet.

I ONCE washed my hair with washing up liquid alone and it was a frizzy mess.

I only ever wash, dry and style my hair once a week max, with the exception being holidays when I'm in and out of water.

Perhaps it's possible not everyone has fine, straight Caucasian, greasy type hair, and therefore different things work for different people? Or, it could just be a big con and some of us should just live with frizzy matted hair? Hmm

HeCantBeSerious · 04/10/2016 16:32

I find L'Oréal and Kerastase make the best products

I'll forgive them all the dead and sick babies in that case.

WhoKnowsWhereTheTimeG0es · 04/10/2016 16:35

Mine's the thick, wavy/curly, absolutely has to have conditioner type of hair too, maybe that's why it doesn't work for me. Shampoo scalp, condition lengths. wet brush through under a running shower, job done. I can brush mine through dry and get loose waves instead, but no way would I be able to do that without a good conditioner, I use silicone free types.

LadyConstanceDeCoverlet · 04/10/2016 16:49

The Dail Fail's on to this one. They've even dug up an "expert" who says it won't work.

Eh? What's the beef with Loreal / Kerostase?

DameDiazepamTheDramaQueen · 04/10/2016 17:04
