Was invited to a wedding and have since received an email from the bride telling me that all guests are forbidden from wearing a hay or fascination?
Wtf?
Does this actually happen now?

Youarenotprepared · 21/09/2016 11:55

On the actual issue here. I also second taking a supply of christmas cracker hats. Put them on after the photos if you want to be polite and respectful. Then spam fb with rebel selfies...

I went to a family wedding this year, having not been to a wedding for about five years (I'm at that age that most of my friends have already got married or are in LTR but are definitely not getting married or are single. Kids are all still at school.)

I didn't want to buy a hat as I have a few lovely ones that I've had for weddings over the years and figured that I'd wear one of them. Got into the church, the mother of the bride and the mother of the groom were both wearing them. A couple of other people had smallish hats. A handful of people were wearing fascinators. But the big majority of people weren't wearing hats at all, no edict from the bride, just what had happened.

Needless to say, I got back to the car after the service, popped hat back in its box and it stayed there for the rest of the day. Very glad that I hadn't actually bought a hat though!

I'm enjoying the thread so won't worry about its provenance and second the blingy tiara idea, and add a huge garish corsage.

brasty · 21/09/2016 12:07

If the wedding is in a church, many religious older women feel it is disrespectful to go to a church service, not wearing a hat.

mummytofourbabies · 21/09/2016 12:16

Hmm ok then haggis. You just look silly now. I have already justified myself more than I should have to. I am no longer going to talk to you. This is just ridiculous.

Oh God, I am just waiting for the Daily Fail to pick up on this and then track down the bride of the Stonehaven wedding. Toe-curling!

ParadiseCity · 21/09/2016 12:22

I'm now adding 'hats at weddings' to my Things that are Contentious in Scotland list. So that's Celtic v Rangers, Indyref, and Hats at Weddings.

AlpacaPicnic · 21/09/2016 12:23

OOoooooooh!!!

ShouldHaveBeenJessicaFletcher · 21/09/2016 12:25

And I thought this thread might be a bit dull......

Fantastic stuff!

SDTGisAnEvilWolefGenius · 21/09/2016 12:25

Good for you, mummy!!

Back to the serious matter now - I do like the idea of deelyboppers, and they could be paired with my suggestion of a tiara!

AlpacaPicnic · 21/09/2016 12:26

Mummy, get your hair done like this

Only1scoop · 21/09/2016 12:27

Shock are hat banning Bridezillas in the north becoming paranoid

MrsJayy · 21/09/2016 12:27

Claires accesories had tiara deelyboppers thats win bloody win 😀

JaniceBattersby · 21/09/2016 12:30

So, Haggis Hatzilla could you maybe let us know why hats are banned? Just so we get the full story?

Aoibhe · 21/09/2016 12:31

I don't really see the big deal tbh. I was recently at a wedding and I would say that 90% of the women were wearing fascinators. I thought they were over the top and far too fussy. I found it very hard to see anything at all in the church actually, so they were quite a nuisance too.

I was a very easy going bride and made no requests, but it never bothers me when other brides do. She will be the one who will have photos in her sitting room for the rest of her life, and maybe she really, really, doesn't like hats and fascinators!

MiddleClassProblem · 21/09/2016 12:35

I suggest if you are both going to winter weddings on Aberdeen, you might need wooly hats anyway

CalmItKermitt · 21/09/2016 12:35

Place marking.

MiddleClassProblem · 21/09/2016 12:36

I also don't understand, Haggis, even if you have deduced that op is going to the same wedding, how you know who exactly from the whole guest list she is?

DisgraceToTheYChromosome · 21/09/2016 12:41

Screw popcorn, I'm making nachos!

AlpacaPicnic · 21/09/2016 12:43

What we really need to know is - does Haggis agree or disagree with the Hat ban? Is she planning on obeying or defying?
People need to know dammit!

AcrossthePond55 · 21/09/2016 12:45

Oh dear. Dons appropriate headgear for the occasion.......or not, as the case may be.

Just what sort of hat would one wear in November in Aberdeen?

NewPotatoes · 21/09/2016 12:47

She will be the one who will have photos in her sitting room for the rest of her life

People don't still do this, do they???

MiddleClassProblem · 21/09/2016 12:48

Haggis could do a Scottish Carmen Miranda with a haggis, a can of iron bru and a deep fried mars bar

easterholidays · 21/09/2016 12:49

Just what sort of hat would one wear in November in Aberdeen?

A beanie hat. Also suitable for June, July and August in Aberdeen.
