To think too many people have Costa or Starbucks as an accessory

A rather stylish women I work with seems to have a costa cup superglued. I never see her drink from it although coffee is present inside. I just don't get why some people always seem to have a coffee cup is it a snobbery thing?

Whenever I present my Waitrose card at the Waitrose till they always ask me if I want a drink. I never do. How do people cope with a trolley, shopping and a fucking cup of coffee?

ILostItInTheEarlyNineties · 18/09/2016 16:26

For some people, especially the teenagers, I think the message they're trying to convey with their Costa cup is;
"I'm very busy and important and very grown up because I drink quite expensive coffee on the go."

I know what you mean op. I have a colleague who doesn't especially like coffee and will walk by various coffee shops to get to Starbucks as it's important to him to be seen with the brand. We have to tolerate endless Instagram pics of pumpkin spice lattes with captions like 'it's a Starbucks kind of day' Hmm If its raining he'll tolerate Costa but doesn't Instagram that. He never says yes to any other brand or one made at work - it's all about it being an accessory.

ILostItInTheEarlyNineties · 18/09/2016 16:33

I'm not even sure I could pick my children up from school while carrying a hot drink, Heatwave.
What about the bags, book folders and PE kit and the art model made from junk they expect you to carry. Confused

CodyKing · 18/09/2016 16:34

There's quite a bit of TV save money type programmes and they always work out how much you'd save in coffee

It's no longer restricted to gas bills or shopping - coffee features quite a lot.

ImAMorningPerson · 18/09/2016 16:37

Totally get what you mean.

I do it too...Brew

hollinhurst84 · 18/09/2016 16:39

I spend most of the winter attached to a Starbucks cup. In my defence I have an eggnog problem Grin and they only sell it for so many months... Swear any weight over December is down to that and not Christmas!

Gottagetmoving · 18/09/2016 16:40

I don't understand why people want to walk around swigging coffee from a plastic cup like they have no time at all to have a drink at home or when they get to work or why they pay silly prices for a coffee.
Is it just coffee that makes people want to do this?

leccybill · 18/09/2016 16:41

I unashamedly insist that McDonald's coffee is the absolute best tasting one out there!
Bet that's not aspirational though.

icebearforpresident · 18/09/2016 16:42

I carry my gregs cup with pride!

Theres one a few doors down from my work and i'll go and get one once a week, twice at a push. £2 (or £2.30 for coffee and a cake) and surprisingly good.

It was fine until i went in one day and was asked if i wanted my usual Blush

MrsJayy · 18/09/2016 16:42

Dd has 1 of those poncey plastic cups with the sippy bit she bought for posing at college with thing is she hates coffee and she put Robinsons apple and blackcurrant in it Grin

MrsJayy · 18/09/2016 16:44

Mcdonalds coffee is the best imo

KatieScarlett · 18/09/2016 16:46

My local Greggs don't even ask, they just start making it when they see me. They also know how many sugars I want. I love my local Greggs staff, they are chatty and funny and they feed me. What's not to like?

LBOCS2 · 18/09/2016 16:46

I drink between 4-7 cups of coffee a day. You would never see me without a cup either - but I refill my cup-on-my-way-In from the percolator at work because I hate washing up and there are never any clean mugs.

Am I aspirational? Or just an addict?

Crocodillian · 18/09/2016 16:48

Look at me, I can afford over-priced coffee, I'm really cool because I know about coffee, and I cant function without caffiene so you know I'm really busy and interesting
I read on an Instagram post that a lot of "insta-models" pose with a starbucks cup as a status symbol. Ive also seen on Pinterest people lay out matching top, skirt, shoes and accessories on a bed as a "cute outfit idea" and they include a take away reusable Starbucks cup as an accessory Hmm.
Whoever is in charge of marketing at Starbucks has played a blinder in making a beverage vessel an acceptable accessory. I dont like coffee and even if I did wouldn't want to promote Starbucks, and even if I did want to promote it I'd rather wear a t shirt than run around with a cup of scalding hot brown liquid sloshing all over me.

Sellingyesterdaysnews · 18/09/2016 16:49

I don't think it's an enviable accessory . I carry one a lot tho.. Am addicted to coffee when I'm tired

Crocodillian · 18/09/2016 16:52

MrsDeVere yes totally true. I work across Hackney and Shoreditch.

NotYoda · 18/09/2016 16:57

There was a Ben Elton sketch about the the new phase of people walking about with massive cups of coffee in what he compared to a baby's sippy cup. Can't find it now

I think they sometimes lifestyle signifier and a way of saying how busy you are, how stressed to may be, how you possibly have such a fab life that you are constantly hungover

I also think there should be separate queues for people ordering coffee and it take soooo blooming long

Tartyflette · 18/09/2016 16:58

Starbucks??? Nooo. They're just awful. Maybe when they pay proper taxes I might patronise their establishments but until then it's Cafe Nero or Pret all the way for me.
(Agree with Leccybill, McDonalds coffee is not half bad, either, the bog standard one is a decent strength. Although still hotter than lava, of course. But lovely with a sausage and egg McMuffin for breakfast.)

EmpressKnowsWhereHerTowelIs · 18/09/2016 16:58

After Hugh's War on Waste I bought a reusable cup. My coffee is now anonymous.

JacquesHammer · 18/09/2016 16:59

Its never a Greggs or Mcdonalds cup is it I get you op it baffles me too

I work from home so very rarely get a coffee from anywhere but my house. If I do its when visiting friends that means a change on a train journey. I then buy one as I hate train hot drinks. I rarely have enough time to go out of the station though so buy at whereevery the queue is shortest which is either Costa, Starbucks or Deli de France.

Look at me, I can afford over-priced coffee, I'm really cool because I know about coffee, and I cant function without caffiene so you know I'm really busy and interesting

For me its more "wow I never get out and get a coffee. Its very hot. Oh right, you sip from these things. Stirring sugar in is going to be difficult" so mainly I juggle it around looking like a cack-handed fool and far from a chic woman about town Grin

UnsuccessfullyAdulting · 18/09/2016 17:01

I just like coffee

KatieScarlett · 18/09/2016 17:04

For me it's a latte for £0.50 with a freebie once a fortnight.
We have a Starbucks drive-thru 5 mins away. Never been. I only have Starbucks or Costa if there is no visible Greggs in sight.

Albadross · 18/09/2016 17:12

I sometimes carry a drink around as a sort of comfort. It makes me feel like a real person or something.
