To think too many people have Costa or Starbucks as an accessory

A rather stylish women I work with seems to have a costa cup superglued. I never see her drink from it although coffee is present inside. I just don't get why some people always seem to have a coffee cup is it a snobbery thing?

Who actually cares about something like this? Who even notices? Weird.

LozzaChops · 18/09/2016 15:21

I have one of those wanky glass Keep Cups cos I can't reconcile myself to cardboard!

Cools down quicker in there too cos it's uninsulated. Happily I like cold tea.

And coffee is definitely a bit aspirational, but I wouldn't say Costa counts. I was a food industry buyer for 7 years and, of all the food wankers, coffee wankers were almost definitely the worst. Not just the ones who like their beans shat out of a wild animal. The ones who like their beans roasted one at a time by hipsters in a roastery in a converted workhouse in Hoxton. That type.

Costa snobbery Grin this is one of the funniest threads! I quite often have a Starbucks in my hand but I never think "ohh check me out all hipster with my aspirational coffee cup" Quite the opposite actually, more like saving me from the depths of a 5am start Grin

KickAssAngel · 18/09/2016 15:25

Morris Zapp is right, though. I teach middle school in 8th grade and a Starbucks opened up near the school. There are kids (and their parents) who would rather be late to school than skip the Starbucks each morning. If they can talk their parents into buying for their friends as well, they all stand in the hallway together, holding their cups just so.

It's a thing. Generally people grow out of it by the age of 20, though.

SnakeWitch · 18/09/2016 15:26

I like Greggs coffee more than Costa. I'm not even ashamed Grin

ILostItInTheEarlyNineties · 18/09/2016 15:26

I wouldn't trust myself to carry coffee in a cardboard cup all day. It would end up all down me. Grin

It must costa lot to buy several cups of coffee a day so I suppose it could be a sign that you're 'well off'.
Sorry about the lame pun.

NightWanderer · 18/09/2016 15:26

I think it depends on where / who you are. Around here, there's a particular brand that has queues out the door, mainly teens (average age 13-15), drinks are a ridiculous price but the teenagers just seem to love hanging out there and carrying that brand of drink around.

Then I remember when we got a Starbucks nearby as a teen, and we did the same Blush Grin

However I don't think adults would think about it so much, unless I'm being naive. I have a travel mug which I bring my own coffee in to work and use to make tea, most colleagues do similar or have regular mugs at work. There are also plenty of people with disposable cups from coffee shops but that just tends to be a sign that they wanted to pick up a drink on their way / don't work in the building normally so don't have a mug there / didn't have time to bring their own coffee etc.

I know what you mean. We were commenting about this the other day - our parents could leave the house for a few hours and return for a hot drink. Everyone swans around with drinks at all times now, on the way to and from anywhere. I am not looking down on anyone, I've done it myself but find it amusing how an idea gets sold to us and suddenly that's what everyone does. We had an express open near us and the first thing my dh said was you'll have a costa cup permanently attached now like everybody else. Too expensive.

It's like in offices everyone brings in increasingly complicated coffee apparatus, or juice bullet things as a necessity to get through the day. A few years ago it was really a kettle and a tub of instant and everyone got on with it.

Cagliostro · 18/09/2016 15:32

I don't like coffee so I can't be a snob :(

Ratley · 18/09/2016 15:33

I have Nescafe in a crock costa mug. Seemingly permanently at work, What does that make me OP?

FurryLittleTwerp · 18/09/2016 15:34

usual I think Starbucks coffee is shite & Costa slightly better - not better enough for me to want to drink it though Grin

ILostItInTheEarlyNineties · 18/09/2016 15:35

I'm nodding and thinking what a sensible idea it is to take a Thermos to work. I'm officially turning into my mother.

OP, why not buy your colleague a Thermos for Christmas? (and watch her recoil in horror when she opens it Grin because it might damage her busy no time to make coffee career image?)

JenLindleyShitMom · 18/09/2016 15:36

Are you jealous that you have no cups OP?

TaterTots · 18/09/2016 15:36

Get a hobby.

SatsukiKusakabe · 18/09/2016 15:38

It's funny that everyone thinks they are making an individual choice in social vacuum because they just like coffee.

As for who even notices - you never notice or question trends, just go along with them?

Floisme · 18/09/2016 15:39

Maybe tea and instant give her the shits, op. They do me.

MrsJayy · 18/09/2016 15:42

Its never a Greggs or Mcdonalds cup is it I get you op it baffles me too and i hate the sippy bit on them feels like a baby cup Grin

momtothree · 18/09/2016 15:43

The teens all do selfies with Costa cups or Starbucks cups with their names in - it's definitely a snobby thing!!!

You'll notice - iPhone Costa cup and sparkly dog lead -

Too busy to make your own??? Stand in a queue whilst they take forever to serve you

FayKorgasm · 18/09/2016 15:44

I used to permanently have a Starbucks cup in my hand when they did that tongue stripping bitter lemonade a couple of years ago. It was delish.
