To think too many people have Costa or Starbucks as an accessory

A rather stylish women I work with seems to have a costa cup superglued. I never see her drink from it although coffee is present inside. I just don't get why some people always seem to have a coffee cup is it a snobbery thing?

What rattles me more than anything is that Waitrose allow people to walk around their store, pushing trolleys with one hand and holding cups of coffee that have been handed out at the Customer Service desk, A few weeks back someone spilled very hot coffee all over the checkout, trolley and floor. Just lucky nobody was in the way - there must be some 'Elf n' safety ' rule about this, surely?

HalfNamasteHalfTTTH · 19/09/2016 18:24

Yes. YABU. The cups aren't recyclable so I imagine she's clinging on to the same one every day in order to save the planet. Wink

Hellochicken · 19/09/2016 18:29

Costa is expensive, but I do like their coffee. I think people do like to carry the cup round for a while, longer than if they were carrying a polystyrene mug (even if it was as sturdy). But again I do like coffee and I cant drink it when it is hot. Even with austerity I think coffee shops seem to be booming.
So YANBU about starbucks
but YABU about costa, just because I wish I could afford to have one made for me everyday and carry it around sipping it.

Let's build new houses from muffins! Crisis solved.

Always have a coffee in my hand when in town - just live coffee but don't have time to waste sitting down with it. Can't see it's a problem for anybody.

Jemmajamjar · 19/09/2016 22:24

I love a Starbucks Chai Tea Latte, always got one in my hand. Either that or a wine glass 😜.....

lotbyname · 19/09/2016 23:40

I like coffee and there's a costa by the train station... Maybe your collegue also likes this addictive, widely available beverage?

LassWiTheDelicateAir · 20/09/2016 00:52

I just want to say I am really enjoying this thread, all of your posts.

I think I'm going to get one of these for my desk.... Me too.

I have one of those Bodum travel portable coffee presses which I keep in the office.

ShteakandShpuds · 20/09/2016 08:02

Luckily for me, there's no shite Costa/Starbucks type places within 40 miles so none of that daft 'cardboard accessory' nonsense here.

However, we do have proper independent cafes serving gorgeous food and beverages including my favourite coffee by Badger and Dodo. Very tasty.
Takeaway cups are unbranded (and recyclable in some cases).

I used to buy a costa on my way to work when I was in the UK as the machine stuff in the office wasn't very nice. But it was pretty ordinary. :)

Tapandgo · 20/09/2016 08:55

*disclaimer

I should have added - it is not always Costa ( and rarely Starbucks). Any decent coffee from any decent outlet will do

AnnabelC · 20/09/2016 09:48

My daughter worked out it cost £1000 a year for her daily costa coffee on the way to work. It hasn't stopped her!

NightWanderer · 20/09/2016 10:00

I do like the idea that I'm a cool hipster drinking from my ironic thermos, rather than aging curmudgeon who's not spending that much money on a drink.

There is actually a Starbucks on the floor below I work. I'm not allowed to use the wi-fi at work for personal use, so I could either sit in Starbucks with my macbook, clutching an overpriced drink and some baked goods, or I can sit at my desk with my flask and packed lunch shamelessly using the Starbucks wi-fi for free. Guess which I choose Grin

To be fair pubs have been around since the dawn of time and are slowly dying out, my local town had six and now has none. Some have been demolished for housing, one turned into a health centre (ironic!) and others just turned into other businesses.

Satsuki's comment about Milk Bars was interesting because that is a fad that does seem to be coming back. Two have opened up in my area and are very popular indeed with queues out of the door on a weekend.

If you'd asked a drinker in the 50's if they could see pubs dying out I suspect they would have laughed at you so I would never say never.

Ask her how she'd feel about a £1000 pay rise?

StealthPolarBear · 20/09/2016 19:20

I suspect she'd say thanks very much and continue to buy her coffee. I don't really understand this line of thought. Unless youI've incredibly frugally most of us have disposable income and choose how we spend it. Do you say the same to people who buy a bottle of wine a week? Or have a manicure once a month?

minatiae · 20/09/2016 19:37

So it costs £1000 a year. So what? I'm sure there's something that costs everyone something similar per year that they are happy to spend that money on. Buying lunch every day? That's £1000 a year. Have a car? £1000 a year. Bottle of wine a week? Takeaway once a week? Hair dye & cut every 6 weeks? DC's hobbies? Monthly drinks with friends? All of those are individually going to be about £1000 a year. It's called disposable income for a reason.

If I saved all my disposable income, I'd be rich and bored. And caffeine deprived.

KatieScarlett · 20/09/2016 21:59

If I saved all my disposable income I'd be poorly dressed with bad eyebrows and quite unspeakable hair. Everywhere.
I'd be a rich, scruffy, yeti.

Yep - but work provide free coffee - they do not provide haircare or kids clubs

KatieScarlett · 20/09/2016 22:50

Work provide free coffee?
I wish.
Even the tap water is suspect. They fished out a pigeon from the tank once...

StealthPolarBear · 21/09/2016 06:41

How do you know annabel s daughters work provide free coffee?

hollieberrie · 21/09/2016 21:31

In the public and charity sectors, employers definitely do not provide free coffee. Youre lucky to get a free biro to do your work with.

Sorry derailing it took you 6 years to get a parking permit so you were filling meters before that ?

Trills · 22/09/2016 08:53

I would definitely watch Usual as the Barista Barrister.

I'd agree that a coffee cup is only a fashion statement if you:
a - are IN the late 90s or early 00s
b - were BORN in the late 90s or early 00s

If you are older than that it's no longer a fashion statement, but fashion/trends have influenced your thinking that it is normal. Because everything that we think is normal is influenced by society.
