To think too many people have Costa or Starbucks as an accessory

A rather stylish women I work with seems to have a costa cup superglued. I never see her drink from it although coffee is present inside. I just don't get why some people always seem to have a coffee cup is it a snobbery thing?

I think I'm going to get one of these for my desk....

To think too many people have Costa or Starbucks as an accessory
Tywinlannister · 18/09/2016 18:54

Starbucks is dishwater. I buy a coffee from the Fleet River Bakery every morning, its not even in a branded cup.

Too many people? What is the right amount of people innocently drinking coffee for you to be happy?

awesomeness · 18/09/2016 18:55

I always have a costa/Starbucks/random coffee cup stuck to my hand

maybe she just likes coffee......and doesn't think drinking it bothers anyone else......

didn't realise coffee was a snobby thing to have, am I missing something? maybe she doesn't have any other vices and coffee from Starbucks on the way to work is her 'treat'

or is it that it's a Starbucks cup that bothers you? if it was a generic coffee cup from a random cafe would that bother you as much? are you scared of the Lady on the Starbucks cups?

I'll think again next time I drink coffee in public, wouldn't want to end up being the subject of a judgey pants most in some random corner of the net

awesomeness · 18/09/2016 18:56

what about the reusable Starbucks travel cups.....?

would they make your head explode with the sheer snobbyness of a more expensive plastic reusable cup?

VladmirsPoutine · 18/09/2016 18:59

In order to fit in you'd most likely need to carry it around with you Ineed, it's not just enough for your colleagues to see you being cool.

notarehearsal · 18/09/2016 19:08

But it's not really anything to do with drinking a cup of coffee. I like coffee, I drink coffee. I also like wine and I drink wine. Now if I started clutching a bottle of Pinot as I went about my ordinary day and just casually having the occasional slurp I'm sure eyebrows would be well and truly raised. I can remember when I first saw someone at Uni carrying a ........bottle of water! She had this attached to her hand every second, it was most bizarre and the rest of us sort of giggled slightly embarrassed as we assumed she may have been an alcoholic. And for the next fifteen years everyone who was anyone carried around a bloody bottle of water. It was like, if I don't have a liquid to drink every single second I am really going to die. The funniest thing is, when I travelled around Africa all the locals laughed at us with our bloody bottles of water. Anyway, where was I ...?

LaPampa · 18/09/2016 19:26

Tywinlannister I used to get my morning coffee from the Fleet River Bakery until my office moved and I had to find somewhere new!

I often walk around with a coffee but usually a smaller and often unbranded cup as I prefer independent coffee shops - Costa or Starbucks only if no other option. I struggle to see them in any way aspirational and would never Instagram them (but I would a coffee in a glass or cup in a nice coffee shop).

Woolyheads · 18/09/2016 19:29

I doubt it. Plenty of people think it's a bit thick to buy your coffee from Costa or Starbucks. And then there is the thing where it is cool or trendy to go to independent shops and chains are looked down upon. So why would you want to be seen with a costa cup? Maybe she's thirsty.

Doobigetta · 18/09/2016 19:30

I'm kind of envious of the childlike sense of wonder some people still seem to experience at the sight of someone with a takeaway coffee. Life must be a non-stop magical rollercoaster for you.

MissClarke86 · 18/09/2016 19:30

I just don't understand the coffee shop culture at all, unless you're sitting in and enjoying meeting a friend as well.( To be honest, even then I'd not pay that money for a coffee)

It's expensive and you can make the same thing at home for a fraction of the price, and stick it in a transportable cup. I just don't get the appeal (nor the need to be drinking coffee on the go to be honest)

It also bugs me that they are everywhere. In my town you can stand in one spot and see at least 3.

That's my very biased opinion though.

user1473106504 · 18/09/2016 19:31

lol guess they like it, costa is defo better than starbucks though however sandwiches are overpriced

CombineBananaFister · 18/09/2016 19:32

I'm one of those coffee wankers who care where their beans come from, what it tastes like (god forbid Hmm ) and how hot the milk is but I couldn't give a shiny shit about emblems and logos. Won't do paper though, vessel is as important as the contents hehe Wink
Arent we all some sort of wanker though about which lifestyle we buy into? Food shops put into Waitrose bags from Aldi, although Aldi is cool now so maybe vice-versa Grin Even 'anti' type people are so by purposely not carrying a Starbucks or buying into something to prove they are not 'those type of people'.
If you ask me there's not many people who genuinely don't give a shit what they buy or consume as it all relates to some herd or clique. Personally am just really fecking caffeine addicted

nooka · 18/09/2016 19:32

dd tells me (with an older teen eye roll) that it's a bit of a thing for the first years in her high school to instagram themselves with their Starbucks coffee cups at school. None of the elementary schools where we live are near to shops whereas the high school is in the dead centre of fast food land. I think it's just a 'aren't I so grown up' thing.

SatsukiKusakabe · 18/09/2016 19:33

But...why not have one where you are going? Or where you came from? Or sit in and get one? Everyone started walking round with a paper cup of coffee, independently of each other, because they just like coffee and need to pick up one on the go. Ok.

KatieScarlett · 18/09/2016 19:36

My office does not have a latte maker. Hence the need to leave, go to shop, purchase beverage and return to work.
I could of course buy milk, Nescafé and sugar and spend half an hour frothing up hot milk, but frankly I can't be arsed.

You are utterly shameless .... Think of the children ...

I know, I should hang my head in shame, but my addiction comes first. It's just the way it is...

☕️☕️☕️☕️☕️

😁😁😁

Nataleejah · 18/09/2016 19:40

I shamelessly admit that at uni we used those "travel" mugs to sip something naugty in class Grin

hazeyjane · 18/09/2016 19:40

I read Usual's post as....

'I'm a barrister I never pay for my coffee Grin'

....and thought - I should have gone into law, lucky fuckers.

I love coffee, every variety, every brand, but hate the idea of drinking it walking down the street (plus drinking coffee on the hoof makes dunking very difficult)

MillyMollyMardy · 18/09/2016 19:41

I took my DF and DD (6) to M+S today and we went to the café. DD hadn't finshed her hot chocolate when we left.
She put the lid on and walked around sipping it every so often. I was watching her and laughing, she's obviously noticed people doing it.

KatieScarlett · 18/09/2016 19:44

I knew I loved you Usual
(Now it's not only for your mind)

beautygal29 · 18/09/2016 19:51

I think it is coffee snobbery but I think it's funny too. I'm a Starbucks girl and proud even have their machine but tbh I have a 3yo and all coffee is good coffee right? (Just not costa or neros) Grin

Thingvellir · 18/09/2016 19:55

I get a costa every morning on my way to the office. It has nothing to do with the way it looks and everything to do with the fact I like a coffee in the morning! Amazed that people think this is an affectation, that had truly never occurred to me. I do not drink Starbucks though, ever, I'm boycotting those bastards

KatieScarlett · 18/09/2016 19:56

I have beans, a grinder, cuisinart fuck off machine, a tassimo, several cafetière and some Nescafé Colombia instant granules.
I still buy my daily latte.
Because I am a lazy fucker and don't want to wait 9hrs until I get home for coffee.

TheLastHeatwave · 18/09/2016 19:59

Well, well...who'd have thunk?! My takeaway coffee cup is announcing all kinds of things to the world, cheeky little bugger. Here's me thinking 'FAB, coffee, ahhhhh'. When all this time it's busy telling the workd I think I'm so busy, very important, too well off, stupid...& whatever else. Amazing 😂

...& PMSL at a Costa Cup being snobby or aspirational 😂

My friend has a bit of a stick up his arse about it too. A while ago he was 'joking' that all the money I spend on buying coffee out I could afford a holiday. Well, aside from the fact that I go on holiday anyway so it's not like I can't do both...I could stop buying coffee out (it's purely hypothetical, it's not going to actually happen) & save the money. All I'd be doing is changing the point of enjoyment. I ENJOY a good coffee, why would I stop doing something I ENJOY pretty much every day - often more than once a day, to save the money to do something else I enjoy only once a year or once a month?! It makes no sense to me.
