To hate it when men 'joke' like this.

Maybe it's not always men but I've never experienced a woman who has done this.

So today I took DS1 to a charity shop. He picked two books at 50p each. I gave Ds a pound coin. The man at the till took the books and said, 'That's four pounds please'. Ds looked worried and the man said 'Only joking, it's one pound'. We paid and left.
I've had people say this sort of thing to me so often and it always beffuddles me and makes me feel stupid. Am I the only person who attracts this form of idiocy? Aibu to be pissed off that this man worried my son? It's not fucking funny!

I can just see the bloke trying to explain it.

"I told a child that books worth £1 actually cost £4. Great joke, eh?"

"No"

limitedperiodonly · 18/09/2016 11:25

Maybe so, balletcats. That doesn't mean I shouldn't say it. After all, many people on this thread are saying that some people are very literal and that's why we shouldn't make jokes.

What I said was a very literal response to his comment. I did have to rearrange my plans, but I was prepared to do so. I was joking, but I might not have been. I wasn't angry, I was explaining.

It was his decision to interpret that as my saying he had ruined my weekend. I said nothing of the sort.

Ego147 · 18/09/2016 11:25

Rude, horrible joker

Actually, he comes across as a bit of a prat who has decided to tell a child that £1 of books is worth £4.

Agree with Navy

Not read all the way through but Ego's posts are a good summing up. Just not funny. Actually a bit pathetic.

She's learning the concept of tricking people, occasionally does it well but usually just says something obviously wrong, then cries 'tricked you!' with great glee. I am gradually teaching her that the thing has to be convincing to be a trick, and the reveal quick for it to work as a joke. Maybe I'm training her to be a buffoon! (Think she'll grow out of it)

I don't understand this post at all. Why would you want to teach a child to the concept of "tricking people " as a joke and teach her to be convincing at it?

Bubblebloodypop · 18/09/2016 11:31

YANBU, I had a step mum who did this all the time. It made me feel awful.

HunterHearstHelmsley · 18/09/2016 11:32

YABU. Can't believe some people are saying low level bullying etc. It's not a great joke but that's all it is. Not trying to belittle anyone.

Because some people make a good and honest living at it. Some people enjoy it and pay a lot of money to be tricked by the likes of Penn and Teller or Derren Brown.

Yorkieheaven · 18/09/2016 11:36

With you op I hate this. He was an arse.

People who play practical jokes are usually as boring as Fuck to other adults. Cannot imagine teaching a child to trick people. How odd.

Ohflippinheck · 18/09/2016 11:40

I would write a letter to his boss. Who knows how many children this dangerous charity shop sociopath has terrified with his £based jokes.

limitedperiodonly · 18/09/2016 11:42

My brother used to pretend he was being sucked down the plughole in the bathroom. It was very convincing when I was six and he was 11. My parents told him to stop doing it but also said to me: 'This is the plughole, this is your foot. Your foot is not going to go down there and he's bigger than you so he's definitely not going to fit. He's being silly and if he does it again, leave him to it.'

Exactly. And why any parent would want to coach a child to be convincing at it on the off chance it might be a future career option is utterly bizarre.

So who actually has my nose?

Ego147 · 18/09/2016 11:46

Now if I worked in a shop and someone asked me for "Four candles", I might be tempted to go down this route....

Ohflippinheck · 18/09/2016 11:48

I'm just going to give myself a Biscuit
This is not the board for me...

tracyjane41 · 18/09/2016 11:48

Teasing children is never right and can lead to psychological problems, however you are at liberty as the parent to say something as I definitely would have and this in turn shows a child that you are defending and protecting them from these 'funny' bastards!

Only1scoop · 18/09/2016 11:48

I'm a practical joker, can't help it always have been.

JacquesHammer · 18/09/2016 11:51

This type of "joke" together with practical jokes and just peurile.

JacquesHammer · 18/09/2016 11:52

I'll share your thoughts with my friend at work tomorrow. He was doing a magic show yesterday for his nephew's birthday. Maybe it went well or maybe it ended in tears and lasting trauma. Possibly some of the 6 year olds present saw through it because he's a bit rubbish. Luckily that's not his career.
