To wonder who are these people who don't iron

And to wonder what their secrets are? I hear it all the time and have no idea how they manage it. It would be my idea of nirvana not to iron again.

I don't iron.

The only adult clothes that really need ironing are DH's work shirts and the odd cotton skirt or pair of trousers. Our cleaner does those, bless her. All my tops are stretchy and don't need ironing. Smart clothes (eg suits, tailored trousers) get dry cleaned.

The DCs sometimes look a bit crumpled but life's too short to iron clothes for a 3 and 1 yo who will get messy anyway and have no earthly need to look smart.

Grin at "unironed jeans look awful". You realise jeans are originally labourer's clothes right? designed to be rugged and practical and easy to chuck on? Doubt they were ever intended to be ironed...

OhtoblazeswithElvira · 16/09/2016 14:09

I don't iron. DC'S uniform is not creased. Most of it is non-iron and the bits that aren't will look absolutely fine if you are careful when hanging them up to dry.

How do unironed jeans look awful? Confused Surely when you hang them to dry the weight of the fabric makes them hang properly?

My mum still irons everything - all clothes, towels, bedding, even underwear and rags she uses for dusting. She loves it Hmm

timeforsomethingnewithink · 16/09/2016 14:10

Me, I never iron. Every time I buy cloths I check to see if the fabric looks like it will need ironed first!

timeforsomethingnewithink · 16/09/2016 14:12

Clothes, not cloths!

CelticPromise · 16/09/2016 14:12

I have three or four tops and dresses that do need ironing. DH irons his work clothes. Other than that I don't bother. I don't tumble either, just shake clothes out and hang them. And if people notice I don't give a toss. Just stop if you want to. Nothing bad will happen.

sweetheart · 16/09/2016 14:13

I very rarely iron. I hang everything from wet which makes the creases drop out of most things.

PumpkinPie9 · 16/09/2016 14:13

I've got a setting on my washing machine that has a low spin and leaves things damp, so if you shake things out and hang them on a hanger to dry a lot of things don't need ironing such as school skirts, jeans and t shirts. PE polo shirts are fine like this. Work shirts need ironing and school shirts too if they are not going to be worn under a jumper. (Compulsory jumper and blazer unless in a heat wave in the winter terms, so no point ironing the shirt then.)

WaitrosePigeon · 16/09/2016 14:14

Hello, I'm one. My secret is that I wear creased clothes.

I really snorted at that Grin

Youvegottobekidding · 16/09/2016 14:14

I only iron the school uniforms on a Sunday then other bits when needed. Ironing must be one of the most mind-numbing tasks ever!

pandarific · 16/09/2016 14:15

You just only buy or keep clothes that don't need to be ironed. If you have an oh who MUST wear shirts though, I'm afraid they need to do them themselves. Or change job.

Life is really too short for ironing.

Mirandawest · 16/09/2016 14:16

I don't iron. DH irons his work shirts. I wear mostly clothes that don't crumple, or I wear crumpled clothes. Children have polo shirts for school and they don't need ironing

I also don't iron.

It's very simple, really!

I don't have a dryer though so shake, dry flat, don't buy clothes which require ironing... And don't mind looking creased!

LadyofDispleasure · 16/09/2016 14:20

I try not to iron. Agree many fabrics can look absolutely fine if they are washed, dried, and folded / put away carefully to avoid creases. I have a few tops and trousers that need ironing so I do those as needed. DS is 5 and sometimes looks a bit crumpled but I honestly don't see the point in ironing his clothes unless it's an occasion. His school clothes are iron free Wink

Judydreamsofhorses · 16/09/2016 14:24

I swing both ways on this - I would absolutely never iron things like bed linen, jeans, and so on, but there are other things that I do, because I think they look far nicer. I try and just do bits from each wash as soon as they're dry so there's never an "ironing pile". My DP was recently made redundant, and the only good thing to come of that is having five less shirts a week to iron.

alizondevice · 16/09/2016 14:24

What is this ironing thing you speak of? I'm not sure if I'm familiar with the concept. Grin

Seriously, take clothes straight out of the washer, give them a good shake, and dry them on hangers if you can. Works for most things except dress shirts. I don't wear dress shirts, but you can buy non iron. If that fails, outsource!

cdtaylornats · 16/09/2016 14:30

A friend of mine doesn't iron shirts, if he gets a new one he washes it and puts it to dry on a hanger and says after that you never need to iron them.

Flowerpower41 · 16/09/2016 14:36

I deliberately bought non iron shirts for ds now he is in secondary school. However they still need a little iron. Life is too short and I value my spare time. I feel as if I spend hours a week doing mundane chores as it is and there is more to life!

All power to those who enjoy ironing though. Each to their own.

MistyMeena · 16/09/2016 14:40

I iron school uniform, and what I'm wearing for the day. 10 mins in the morning at the very most. Lots of stuff just doesn't need ironing if you hang it straight out of the washer.

I do not iron any bedding, tea-towels, pants or suchlike.

torthecatlady · 16/09/2016 14:41

We don't really iron very often, as soon as the washing machine finishes everything is hung up in the bathroom and we out the dehumidifier on.

Sheets are usually done on a sunny day outside on the line and folded immediately or put straight back on bed.

I will iron something if I'm going to wear it that day and it really needs it. I hate ironing though and I hate putting washing away.

Funnily enough, this thread reminded me that I bought some nicely scented ironing water... I may iron my work shirt today!

SpookyPotato · 16/09/2016 14:42

I don't! Only if DPs suit needs to come out for funerals, weddings and interviews- thankfully all are very rare!
Most clothes just don't need it now, I probably have low standards too.. I see it as a waste of life (for me anyway, I know some people enjoy it) I just hang on the airer.

Sparklesilverglitter · 16/09/2016 14:44

I don't iron, never have.

Things get washed on an anti crease cycle and a good shake once out of the machine and that's it, clothes are good to go

2kids2dogsnosense · 16/09/2016 14:47

Me too, Borp - there is the added benefit that you don't have to worry about creasing them as you sit down etc Grin

TragicallyUnbeyachted · 16/09/2016 14:47

I don't iron -- or very rarely. I buy stuff that doesn't really need ironing (do a scrunch test before buying), I hang stuff up to dry and I am not bothered about minor creases.

We do get DH's work shirts ironed, though -- he used to do it himself but there's a laundrette over the road that has a very reasonably-priced shirt service. Children's school shirts are non-iron.
