To wonder who are these people who don't iron

And to wonder what their secrets are? I hear it all the time and have no idea how they manage it. It would be my idea of nirvana not to iron again.

I don't wear clothes that need ironing with the exception of my work shirts (office worker). I don't iron these either, and should anyone make a comment, I'd say that since I drive to work, it gets creased in the car. No one has ever said anything though (and we do have a "business smart" dress code).

Topseyt · 16/09/2016 21:12

I never iron.

It is really very easy not to iron. Just don't do it.

LazyDoll · 16/09/2016 21:14

Life is definitely too short to iron.
The only thing I iron is Hama bead creations and the last time I did that I forgot the grease proof paper and stuck them all to the iron!
Ironing is hazardous for your health Wink

AliceThrewTheFookingGlass · 16/09/2016 21:14

I have an iron. I think it's in the unpacked box on the landing from when we moved in almost a year ago.

Sod ironing.

MomWobble · 16/09/2016 21:16

I don't buy anything that looks like it needs ironing.

For school/work uniforms, I swear by my DriBuddy. Wash it, hang it, done!

annandale · 16/09/2016 21:17

Dh stopped doing a job that needed shirts.

I have one shirt that I iron. Good hanging, good folding and a high proportion of Lycra.

GETTINGLIKEMYMOTHER · 16/09/2016 21:22

I have a sister who doesn't even have an iron, and hasn't for years.

However she lives in the US, where just about everyone tumble dries everything, and I am told that hanging anything on a washing line is a sign of either extreme weirdness or poverty.

redexpat · 16/09/2016 21:23

I am a student, so it doesnt mtter. A lot of my smarter tops are manmade fibre so no creases.
DH is an electrician so wears tshirts under his dungarees.
2 children are preschool, and there are no school uniforms here.

So unless it's a christening, wedding, funeral or choir concert there's really no need.

Tunnocksmallow · 16/09/2016 21:25

My secret... non iron school uniform.
Taking things out of tumblr drier and shaking while still warm, then fold/hang.
Iron only comes out for job interviews, weddings and funerals.

itfcbabe · 16/09/2016 21:30

I don't ever iron, don't even know where our iron is.

bringonyourwreckingball · 16/09/2016 21:34

I iron once in a blue moon. It's a combination of 1) DH irons his own shirts 2) school uniform is polo shirts so doesn't need ironing 3) I mainly buy stuff that doesn't need ironing and 4)!i have my children well trained in the 'shake it out and make sure it's flat' art of hanging washing on the airer. Also I just really don't give that much of a shit.

Lweji · 16/09/2016 21:41

I get someone else to do it, mostly.
But some of my clothes do need ironing.

Bettercallsaul1 · 16/09/2016 21:56

I am very much in the minority here, with Jantutor and Matilda - I iron everything, including sheets and dusters. How this obsession has arisen I do not know. When I was young, I followed my mother's example and never ironed anything, but gradually, over the years, my true nature as a compulsive ironer has emerged. Like pps, though, I iron while watching TV or DVDs or listening to the radio so it doesn't seem quite such hard work.

bellasuewow · 16/09/2016 22:12

My grandmother ironed pants, dishcloths and flannels. I do not iron at all and never buy anything that needs ironing. I think it is a waste of time.

YouTheCat · 16/09/2016 22:23

I haven't ironed anything since 2006.

Whoamiwhatami · 16/09/2016 22:35

I don't iron or tumble dry anything. I'm also the annoying person who still has white polo shirts in July.

I learnt from my mum. Peg out so there are no obvious peg marks. Fetch in when just dry, fold up and put straight away.

Dry flat on airer if it can't be put outside.

Crispspsps · 16/09/2016 22:39

Yes, Whoami, try your hardest to make sure clothes come off the line/in from the drier with no creases. HATE ironing.

PoloStar · 16/09/2016 22:49

I have been with my DP for nearly 11 years and I don't "think" we own an iron....

My DM not only used to iron my knickers and my DF Y fronts, but she also had a daily help who did the ironing as well.

When my DB worked in London, he owned 14 shirts - so he could send a week's worth off to be laundered, and still have a week's worth to wear.

We were not domesticated children

Leonas · 16/09/2016 23:10

Shaking, hanging up promptly, folding - no ironing required! I just don't wear the things that really need ironed (unless my mother has been to stay - she hates that we don't iron!), job done Smile

Enidblyton1 · 17/09/2016 00:21

I only iron the few clothes which look awful if not ironed - about 5% of my wardrobe. The rest I fold straight from the tumble drier.

Jantutor · 19/09/2016 15:14

I'm still very impressed by all the liberated souls here, though like Bettercallsaul1, I'm quite attached to ironing. I even have a spare iron Blush

gingerboy1912 · 19/09/2016 15:19

I don't iron. Haven't done for about 6 years. I get clothes straight out of the machine and stretch them into shape and hang. Buy non iron shirts and occasionally hang creased linen in the bathroom and the steam from the shower means the creases drop out. And tbh I do t give a monkeys if the odd thing is creased life is too short.

Hidingtonothing · 19/09/2016 15:24

Iron only comes out for job interviews, weddings and funerals.

Same here and on those occasions DH does it (ex forces) Grin

amusedbush · 19/09/2016 15:26

I don't own an iron. I either tumble dry my clothes and fold them immediately or else I put them on straight from the clothes horse and the creases come out as I wear them.

I honestly never look rumpled and unkempt, people are surprised when I tell them I don't iron.

RunningLulu · 19/09/2016 17:05

I don't iron. Trick is to buy fabrics that don't need it & dry on hangers.
