To buy a beauty advent calendar at £95-£150 ?

Hi guys ,

I've been wanting the Selfridges advent calendars(£95) since they started doing them but could never part with the money . This year, I'm seriously considering buying it or the Charlotte Tilbury one (£150). It will be out in October and usually sells out quick and then I'll need to get it on Amazon for extortionate prices - so, I need to decide pretty quick if I should put money aside for one of them.

Has anyone bought either previously? Are they worth the money? Would you aplurge and treat yourself for Christmas?

I just came on to say I'd much prefer the mixed brand ones such as M&S, but actually that decleor one looks amazing.

Whatishappeningwithmyhead · 18/09/2016 11:28

Have been on mumsnet almost six years and its the first time I wish I hadn't read a thread! I WANT THEM ALL dammit!

MorrisZapp · 18/09/2016 11:29

Molton Brown can naff off with their farcically priced shower gels imo. Nice to get as a pressie I suppose.

BettyBetts · 18/09/2016 11:29

Ive got my mum the You Beauty one every year and she would be gutted if I didnt now. It's by far the best value for the quality and brands that you get. I think it was around £60 last year X

FeelingSmurfy · 18/09/2016 11:32

QOD Thankyou, I looked back through the thread for a mention of it but didn't think to look on that link!

Idliketobeabutterfly · 18/09/2016 11:47

Smiggle and tinc do stationery advent calendars. I had both last year and they were very good but I just hope tinc has a plastic inner this year as last year the items weren't staying in the slots. Was a real PITA.

Stillnotslept · 18/09/2016 17:40

Link to the elemis one please? Can't find and I love elemis and it would make me happy. Sad the Liberty one is sold out, didn't even know they existed or want one until a few minutes ago now I really WANT one!!

Alidoll · 18/09/2016 17:45

The Clarins one is rubbish - had it last year and the items were super tiny (like the free samples you get from John Lewis if you ask nicely!). Defo not worth the money for that one.

Look Fantastic and You Beauty ones were good last year as was the M&S one.

Oliver Bonas jewellery nutcracker box was meh. Bought it for daughter and she was bored after day 6. Small plastic charm and some repeated.

L'Occitane and Tinc stationary both a disappointment last year.

(Yeah, I sort of went a bit mad).

There are 3 Body Shop ones this year ranging from £45 to £95 if I remember correctly. If you like body shop then can usually pick one up at a reduced price before Christmas too

Would love the Tsum Tsum one for DD but it's not being released in the UK and costs megabucks on eBay with the shipping

Just be careful of product overload if you buy a couple of these lol!!

Talisin · 18/09/2016 17:50

Stillnot The Liberty one isn't out until the end of October.

TheInimitableMrsFanshawe · 18/09/2016 17:52

I was hugely disappointed by the Ciaté one last year, too many colours I wouldn't use and the polishes themselves lasted about ten minutes before chipping. Not a problem I usually have.

The M&S one was fab, mostly really good products and I flogged the other on eBay and made my money back.

HemanOrSheRa · 18/09/2016 18:20

I don't think the Elemis one has been released yet Still. I've bought stuff direct from the website and I'm signed up to the newsletter. I haven't received any info yet.

VerbenaGirl · 18/09/2016 18:40

I got my DD an (admittedly much cheaper) make-up advent calendar last year - but I have to say that the anticipation was much better than the reality, and some mornings were a bit disappointing. The contents of some windows felt a bit like fillers, and some items were very similar. However, I would expect much better from something in the price range you are considering. On reflection, beauty and make up choices are so personal (what fragrances you like, what type of skin you have, what colours suit you) - that I probably wouldn't consider it again, even if the budget allowed for a more expensive version. I can still see the appeal though :-)

SharonBottsPoundOfGrapes · 18/09/2016 20:04

I've reserved the Look Fantastic one. I hope it's worth £70. Dh will be maaad. :o

HemanOrSheRa · 18/09/2016 20:28

Oooh Sharon Grin. I am so tempted. I really, really want the Liberty one because it's so beautiful to look at. But I'm worried (not desperately Grin!) that it will have a lot of cream/hand cream type stuff that I won't use. Although I do have 2 step daughters and 7 nieces that would be grateful recipients! Argggghhhh! What to do?!

RUBYHETTYBETTY · 18/09/2016 20:30

I've had the Selfridges one bought for me - which was wasted on me really - but last year my wonderful SIL bought me the £260 Jo Malone one - and actually - it was worth it! It's lasted me all year, I've tried and loved new scents - some I didn't like and sold for good money on eBay- even the empty calendar sells for up to £100!! One guy bought 3 @ £260 each the sold 2 for £400 each hence his wife's was free...

myfavouritecolourispurple · 18/09/2016 20:31

I bought one from Arran Aromatics last year. It was about £45. I thought it was great value although it would have been nice to have some shampoo in it and less soap.

HemanOrSheRa · 18/09/2016 20:37

You're not helping BETTY Grin

Parisbanana · 18/09/2016 20:44

Can I tell you how utterly beautiful the Liberty calendar is? My upstairs neighbour had it and then dumped the "box" in the recycling Shock.
Needless to say I rescued it and will have it on display this year (while treating myself and dd to the M&S one)

SharonBottsPoundOfGrapes · 18/09/2016 21:10

What does it look like Paris?

CalebHadToSplit · 18/09/2016 21:20

Thank you, OP, for this thread. I don't wear make up, but got excited by the stationery one. I've now made a challenge with my best friend that we'll make one for each other with a £15 limit. Excited now!

YANBU to get one you like if affording it isn't an issue 🙂

Daydream007 · 18/09/2016 21:21

If you are very comfortable financially then go on and treat yourself and don't feel guilty!
