To buy a beauty advent calendar at £95-£150 ?

Spice22 · 12/09/2016 09:50

Hi guys ,

I've been wanting the Selfridges advent calendars(£95) since they started doing them but could never part with the money . This year, I'm seriously considering buying it or the Charlotte Tilbury one (£150). It will be out in October and usually sells out quick and then I'll need to get it on Amazon for extortionate prices - so, I need to decide pretty quick if I should put money aside for one of them.

Has anyone bought either previously? Are they worth the money? Would you aplurge and treat yourself for Christmas?

Can I tell you how utterly beautiful the Liberty calendar is? Good recycling there Paris! It is as lovely as I thought.

I have preordered the LookFantastic calendar too Sharon. Fuck it. I've had a crappy year. I deserve a treat for myself. I'll ponder over the Liberty one nearer the time Grin.

Paris that is gorgeous! Bravo. Not only have you done something to help the planet you managed to get something really pretty. I'd have nabbed that too.
Heman I've not looked up what might be in this years one or what was in last years. I love a surprise. And I'm addicted to beauty products. 💅🏻😁💋

HemanOrSheRa · 18/09/2016 22:54

I did manage to find a link to last years Look Fantastic calendar Sharon. It looked lovely and on a par, possibly with the M&S one, I think. Not that I knew about these things before this weekend! The cost, if we're worrying about that, seems to be the same. £70 for the LF one. £35 for the M&S one with a minimum £35 spend. I like the idea of getting a nice mix of things from different brands. I love beauty products too. Not because I feel I have to use them, mind. But because I enjoy it Smile.

We're advent calendar mad in this house! Last year:

Me: Yankee and Benefit
Wife: Star Wars Lego and Jelly Bean
DS: Lego City and a chocolate one!

We loved them all but I wouldn't do Benefit again as most weren't products I'd use. I'm definitely getting the Star Wars lego and Yankee ones this year! DS wants a Smiggle... as do I!

MorrisZapp · 18/09/2016 23:34

I get the look fantastic beauty box each month. It's lovely, but I probably only use half the stuff. They always seem to include the same brands, and stuff like makeup pencils and bb cream which I'll never use.

This is a pretty good review of what's available, where and cost:

SharonBottsPoundOfGrapes · 19/09/2016 08:06

Morris I get that box too. I give away a lot of it and mentioned that we probably don't need more eyeliner, so Susan stuff, or hand cream for a while on their FB page. I got a lot of likes. :o I also get Glossybox and Birchbox. See? I'm addicted. Blush

I went for the M&S beauty one last year as couldn't bring myself to part with the money since I was buying for myself. This year hopefully the Selfridges one will be an early gift from hubby.

charlybs · 19/09/2016 09:57

Oh no.

OP what have you done now I want them all!

PaperdollCartoon · 19/09/2016 10:01

LunchBoxLewis Charlotte Tilbury don't test on animals or sell in China.

a8mint · 19/09/2016 10:34

What a great way for the to offload their slow moving products

Jellybean83 · 19/09/2016 10:44

The Liberty one is beautiful! £150 is a bit indulgent for an advent calendar though... Although £400 worth of products is making it more and more justified in my head. Now it's just talking DP around to my way of thinking 🤔

FeelingSmurfy · 19/09/2016 15:16

Anyone know when hotel chocolat one will be available?

CocktailQueen · 19/09/2016 15:22

Have just bought a Playmobil one for dniece, a Lego one for dnephew, a dinosaurs one for ds and a Bomb cosmetics and Smiggle one for dd!! A whole new world of advent calendars :)

Spice22 · 19/09/2016 15:37

OP here. Oh gosh ! Didn't realise the read was still going.

I am not responsible for any bankruptcy which may result from this thread Halo

wendy this is one of the cases where it's cheaper to make your own. You can buy 20 Yankee candles (votives) for less than that. But then , there won't be the element of surprise ...

I just told DH about the Liberty one and he laughed in my face.

BUT he didn't say no!!!

RockyBird · 19/09/2016 18:12

If anyone is going to Germany on a shopping trip the department stores are full of these advent calendars Oct/Nov.

Perfume, make up, toys ... something for everyone and usually about €20 or €30.

buxtonballoon · 19/09/2016 18:22

I had the selfridges one the first year they did it. I agree with whoever said the anticipation was better than the reality, I've never bought one again and still might not, although im very tempted by the idea of a stationery one!

lilacclery · 20/09/2016 09:25

Been inspired by this thread going to buy wooden advent calendar ebay and filling for dc. Could any of you if you can't afford the more expensive ones, give your budget to a friend and ask them to fill calendar for you so that you would get the element of surprise?

Idliketobeabutterfly · 01/10/2016 15:48

Youbeauty, lookfantastic and asos are now up for sale. LF is on preorder and YBD has a code to get a tenner off.

FormerlyCatherineDeB · 01/10/2016 15:52

I bought myself the Loccitane one last year and loved it - lots of travel sizes. Not sure what I am going to buy myself this year. The Liberty one looks absolutely lovely but I think I might be too sensible to spend that much these days .... but then it is only £12.50 a month if you think about it as an annual treat Grin.

Idliketobeabutterfly · 01/10/2016 15:54

l occitane is also up for sale

FormerlyCatherineDeB · 01/10/2016 15:59

Yes, i had an email butterfly which made me think it was much too early for Christmas but clearly not!

Idliketobeabutterfly · 01/10/2016 16:02

they sell so fast I would think the selection won't be huge in november. It gets earlier every year with these every years and they seem to sell faster.
