To buy a beauty advent calendar at £95-£150 ?

Hi guys ,

I've been wanting the Selfridges advent calendars(£95) since they started doing them but could never part with the money . This year, I'm seriously considering buying it or the Charlotte Tilbury one (£150). It will be out in October and usually sells out quick and then I'll need to get it on Amazon for extortionate prices - so, I need to decide pretty quick if I should put money aside for one of them.

Has anyone bought either previously? Are they worth the money? Would you aplurge and treat yourself for Christmas?

Make up one wouldn't interest me. Books or shoes might. I might suggest one to Neal's yard for next year.

I didn't know this kind of thing existed. I would have to buy one for myself though as nobody would buy one for me. I think I saw a Yankee candle one in a supermarket last year.

I've just seen the Decleor one and, at £45, is a much more attractive proposition - quite frankly it's absolutely lush! 😆 definitely wantable!

ILostItInTheEarlyNineties · 17/09/2016 19:36

A shoe advent calendar would be huge Shock but very rewarding. Grin

NattyGolfJerkin · 17/09/2016 19:41

I bought DD a benefit one last year as a surprise.. She was thrilled to bits.

I fancy one this year. I was eyeing up the M&S one last year but would've only used 40% of the products, so it wasn't great value. I'm not a fan of them when they put nail polish in. Same with the L'Occitane one, I fancied it but looked at it properly and there were bits like tiny, useless sponges and bags of glitter stars (?!).

I've had a Lego one for the last 2 years and last year I also had a Wera toolbox advent calendar Grin

This year I'm getting the Wera one again. It has screwdrivers!!

ShelaghTurner · 17/09/2016 19:52

Personally I'd sooner use the money to light the fire than buy a beauty product advent calendar! But I'm not you so if you can afford it and want it, then go for it!

Thingvellir · 17/09/2016 19:56

Does anyone have a linky to an art and craft/stationery one? A quick google just produces a load of hand made calendar (that you put your own stuff in) or instructions to build your own wooden one

Puddington · 17/09/2016 19:58

I got one (from a promotion in You magazine, lol) for about £40-£50 one year and I have to say I thought it was worth it! It was delightful to get a little treat every day haha and while I'd be worried it might contain obscure things I wouldn't use, I was actually very happy with 99.9% of it. Lipsticks, Benefit mascara, bath salts, floral-patterned nail scissors, Molton Brown mini bath/shower gels, nail polish, all manner of body and face creams, lovely cranberry & fig fragrance sticks... wonderful Grin

If you can afford it I'd definitely say go for it OP, writing this has made me want another one...

Puddington · 17/09/2016 19:59

oops meant to say "I was worried" not that I would be worried! Blush

Lunchboxlewiswillyoumarryme · 17/09/2016 20:03

I'd love one to...but I'm a cheep skate who only pays half price for stuff..I wonder If I could get the no 7 one in the January sale and open it each day in February....I hate February it's my worse month...January I'm still high from Xmas .febuary is just cold and icy

AnotherPinkiePieStory · 17/09/2016 20:04

I had Charlotte tilbury calendar last year and although it was gorgeous and a proper treat to open, I wouldn't again. The 12 products were nicely packaged but nothing I would buy again so worth it for treats and to avoid paying full price to test much hyped things but mostly skincare rather than make up.
Ciate was good year before but Elemis was best the year before that. Now I'm wondering about this year......

Lunchboxlewiswillyoumarryme · 17/09/2016 20:05

Is there a vegan cosmetic one ,not tested on animals by any chance

CoffeeAndEnnui · 17/09/2016 20:10

Mrs Huggy, I bought that exact Meri Meri charm bracelet calendar for my little girl last year. Purely because it was so pretty that I thought someone in our house ought to own it! My DP has MH issues and was thus too oblivious to realise the someone was me Timed it well too, the 2015 box is FAR nicer than this year's insipid ballerina offering.

evelynj · 17/09/2016 20:19

I had m&s & loccitane last year, both good

Would recommend 4160 Tuesdays (as I love them & had a great workshop there with some glossers) & might get that this year & either Liberty or one of the selfridges ones-think there were 2 selfridges ones last year.off to investigate decleor. Wouldn't be surprised if lots of other folk do them this year as they're big business now. Always get dc Lego/playmobil & may have to get dh a whisky/beer one this year!

CoffeeAndEnnui · 17/09/2016 20:23

In not-beauty-but-still-a-beautiful-calendar news, this year Biscuiteers have a vintage circus theme for their festive goodies which extends to advent stuff! I absolutely LOVE their cloth advent calendar and tin of advent biccies: www.biscuiteers.com/shop/advent-biscuit-tin.

I literally buy Biscuiteers goodies for everyone in my sodding life but me. This year I am going to (once again) spend at least a month agonising over whether I can justify the cost. Spoiler alert: I can't. But I might fuck it and finally buy one anyway...

Jaimx86 · 17/09/2016 20:29

I usually have the Selfridges one, but now I've seen Decleor that do one too.

Might have to have both!

SharonBottsPoundOfGrapes · 17/09/2016 20:36

In January I bought 3 Ciate ones for £7 each. I ripped one open immediately and have saved the other two for my friends dd's who love nail polish. I had the Benefit one last year. With Boots selling out immediately I was surprised to not only see them on Debenhams website but part of a 3 for 2 and 20% off. I treated myself. It was a 12 day one. I loved it.

Athenajm80 · 17/09/2016 20:38

I bought the Ciaté one after Christmas in the sale 2 years ago and used it as a countdown to a holiday iirc. Last year in about October, Martin Lewis had a code on his site for money off the advent calendar so I treated myself again. Think it was about £15 including delivery. I didn't like all the nail varnishes but the ones I didn't want, I gave away in work. Each morning I'd have people coming up to my desk wanting to know what that day had behind the door, did I want it, and could they have it!

SharonBottsPoundOfGrapes · 17/09/2016 20:41

Ps The Ciate ones were in TKMAXX. They were £50 reduced to £10 and then £7 which was a nice surprise at the till. They had loads of different calendars. A lot were ripped and missing some items but I had a good root and found in tact ones. Make sure you go in January. I also picked up a scented candle tea lights cottage gingerbread house. That was £4 and will look good at Christmas.

NattyGolfJerkin · 17/09/2016 20:48

i might get DH the gin one

100milesanhour · 17/09/2016 21:03

My friend had the jo Malone one last year and loved it.

APlaceOnTheCouch · 17/09/2016 21:06

These are amazing.I might but them for my sisters too. . .

Are there any for men? DH is always looking for miniature toiletries for hand luggage.

wendyg103 · 17/09/2016 21:09

I never knew about these! Just looking at some of the links and they are amazing, literally just looked on groupon and they got Yankee candle one for £30
