to ask if you have got pregnant whilst on the Pill?

I had decided to go on to the pill once my implant expired as I'd being having numerous problems with it; mostly completely unpredictable periods. Though also possibly weight gain and mood swings. (But possibly I'm just moody and chubby).

However, after talking to my Mum about it - I'm completely off put. It turns out she got pregnant three times on the pill; 26 years ago, 14 years ago and 8 years ago. She says its only effective in ideal circumstances and that if you are ill (namely sickness or diarrhoea) it is far less likely to work. She has recently had a coil, and says it was excrutiatingly painful, so another option gone.

My implant has now expired, so I'm really keen on finding an alternative.
NHS online says the pill is 99% effective, but clearly not in my immediate family.

May I ask if you or anyone you know has got pregnant whilst on the Pill? Is it just my Mum and her super-human fertility?

No I haven't but I know 4 people who have. One was on antibiotics. One got drunk and missed a pill. One has a medical condition which prevents the pill from working. One still has no idea how it happened!

UterusUterusGhali · 14/11/2016 23:14

Yup.

Was taking St. John's wart too, and wasn't very punctual with it.

Also had undiagnosed crohns, which affected it.

Degustibusnonestdisputandem · 14/11/2016 23:15

Yep, with DTDs no less! Grin (a very happy surprise though, I appreciate it's not for everyone)

UterusUterusGhali · 14/11/2016 23:15

I also got pg whilst using the cap and breast feeding, and with a guy with a v low sperm count, so I'm not a good example tbh.

Puremince · 14/11/2016 23:18

Yes, had a tummy bug with vomiting, so I continued with the rest of the packet and used condoms as well. One of the condoms burst (user error probably as we weren't used to using condoms). Was just getting over the shock of being pregnant when I had a mc at 9 weeks.

Sorry for the TMI details but the docs aren't available for weeks! I have been on the pill for nearly 10 years and my withdrawal bleed/period is always falls on a Tuesday -Friday standard amount of bleeding, mild cramps just before and sore boobs a couple of days before, however this month I had sore boobs a couple of weeks before and have been so tired almost falling asleep at work, and then on Sunday I had terrible cramps and weds-thurs had brown discharge (instead of regular period tues-fri) which I know is old blood but I haven't had any 'new' blood and don't know why?
I am doing a test tomorrow but wondered if anyone had anything similar or what symptoms people did have when they have become pregnant while on the pill (for future reference!) - thanks x x

Gerardbernie · 30/06/2017 09:28

Yes. Twice! First on combined pill and second on mini pill. I don't know what the odds of that are

alltouchedout · 30/06/2017 09:31

Yes. Twice. 10 years apart. Both times took it properly. Only went on it again as I'd spent almost 10 years being assured I'd just been very unlucky and it couldn't possibly fail again!
I'm getting sterilised soon. I can't risk another unplanned pregnancy.

BoredOnMatLeave · 30/06/2017 09:36

I know a few people who have. I was on it for 9 years and didn't fall pregnant though, despite not being great at remembering to take it. Just luck I guess.

I used to keep mine strapped to my toothbrush so i would remember.

1stTimeMama · 30/06/2017 09:36

I did twice. The second time I was also exclusively bf-ing my 7 month old, hadn't had a period since he was born and had had sex just twice!

My sister fell pregnant having had the coil fitted. She was quite surprised!

RhubardGin · 30/06/2017 09:37

I've been on the pill for 10 years and never fallen pregnant but I know woman that have.

I also know woman who got pregnant who had the coil and the implant so nothing is 100% effective.

zoekickin · 04/07/2017 03:14

Here's one for you then. New relationship(knew him for years before hand) So went back on the pill...still using condoms just incase. Condom split so went and got the morning after pill. Six weeks later I was pregnant with twins...I had a helitopic pregnancy where one twin implanted in fallopian tube....They operated and told me i'd lose both babies. First thing I asked when i came round was if the baby in my womb surrvived. She did, and despite being born at 29 weeks gestation is now an amazingly healthy 9 year old!

Queenofthestress · 04/07/2017 08:27

Yep, with DS on the mini pill, and DD was conceived after the implant broke in my arm

Funnyface1 · 04/07/2017 08:37

My sister did twice. I use to be on the contraceptive patch. Don't know if it's still available but it worked for me.

gabsdot · 04/07/2017 09:36

My SIL got pregnant with twins while on the pill

RiversrunWoodville · 04/07/2017 09:45

birdling even pregnancy doesn't protect you from pregnancy I conceived my DTs 2 weeks apart (technically not twins but superfetation) unfortunately lost them in a second trimester miscarriage though (don't know if this was related)
I had previously conceived dd1 whilst on the Evra patch.
Had to try for quite awhile for dd2 who was our rainbow, maybe should have stayed on the cerezette it might have been easier to conceive her!

rinabean · 04/07/2017 09:52

Slightly embarrassing question, but what counts as diarrhoea for the purposes of pill effectiveness? I have IBS and I don't really have normal shit and then occasionally diarrhoea, it's more of a horrible spectrum for me and normally towards the diarrhoea end (when it's not constipation...). I've never thought about it before, but then when my IBS is worst I don't tend to be interested in sex anyway

Mrsglitterfairy · 04/07/2017 10:08

I've been on microgynon for 14 years and only became pregnant when I came off it to ttc. The key things to remember is to take it around the same time every day (I have mine in my dressing table drawer with my make up so take it when I'm getting ready) and if you are sick, have bad diarrhoea or have antibiotics then you need to abstain or take extra precautions for 7 days.

Ev1lEdna · 04/07/2017 10:29

I got pregnant with my first child on the pill. No vomiting, or illness of any sort, didn't miss it. I just got pregnant. It isn't 100% effective as birth control something like 99.9% (I'm not sure of the exact figure) which still means quite a few women may get pregnant on it. I was one of them.

Ev1lEdna · 04/07/2017 10:31

I don't believe half the people who say they got pregnant on the pill got pregnant because the pill is in affective, either they took it incorrectly or had sex after antibiotics, sickness etc. Some pills have very strict timings too, mine was within a 3 hour window.

Kind of rude really - just because you don't believe something doesn't mean it can't happen.

btw - ineffective
