to ask if you have got pregnant whilst on the Pill?

I had decided to go on to the pill once my implant expired as I'd being having numerous problems with it; mostly completely unpredictable periods. Though also possibly weight gain and mood swings. (But possibly I'm just moody and chubby).

However, after talking to my Mum about it - I'm completely off put. It turns out she got pregnant three times on the pill; 26 years ago, 14 years ago and 8 years ago. She says its only effective in ideal circumstances and that if you are ill (namely sickness or diarrhoea) it is far less likely to work. She has recently had a coil, and says it was excrutiatingly painful, so another option gone.

My implant has now expired, so I'm really keen on finding an alternative.
NHS online says the pill is 99% effective, but clearly not in my immediate family.

May I ask if you or anyone you know has got pregnant whilst on the Pill? Is it just my Mum and her super-human fertility?

StStrattersOfMN · 11/09/2016 12:26

Three times I have been pregnant. All three times I was on the pill, and taking it correctly.

Soubriquet · 11/09/2016 12:28

Oh...this is not making a good read

I'm having my coil out this month to go on the pill instead

HKHKHR · 11/09/2016 16:24

Op there are loads of apps that will remind you to take your pill everyday. Clue is a great cycle tracker that will also remind you.

dentydown · 11/09/2016 17:21

Got pregnant three times on the pill. Everyone blamed me! I was taking it as instructed, didn't miss one.

EnthusiasmDisturbed · 11/09/2016 18:12

I believe the pill isn't suited for everyone

I tried many different pills some gave me constant headaches all made me put on weight some more than others. I feel physically different when I have been on the pill my boobs always are bigger and I tend to feel more sluggish I have friends who feel better physically when they are on the pill

I no longer use any hormonal contraception and feel better for it

Lunchboxlewiswillyoumarryme · 11/09/2016 18:21

Blimey,I'm on the pill,with bulimia...I guess I've been lucky so far😬

Isitjustmeorisiteveryoneelse · 11/09/2016 18:26

I did. 14 years ago. I took the pill perfectly. At the time I was also necking about 20 laxatives a day, didn't occur to me that might be a problem though, doh!

Sleeplessinmybedroom · 11/09/2016 20:02

I got pregnant twice on the pill. The first time I was taking it correctly but the second time I took antibiotics not realising that it affected it.

Usernamegone · 11/09/2016 20:41

I've been on either the combined pill or mini pill for 17 years. I've never been pregnant so it has worked for me.

MalbecAndLindt · 11/09/2016 20:49

Yep but more down to down to "user error" Went through a shitty couple of weeks with DP in a car accident (not serious but car a write off) so between taking him to hospital, being put on nights in work, family stuff, I didn't know night from day. Missed 3 pills, and ended up with chemical pregnancy.

Aside from that, I've never fallen pregnant (that I know of) in 10+ years of being on it. Only fell pregnant when we TTC.

mummyto2monkeys · 11/09/2016 20:55

I fell pregnant on the mini pill with our dd. I had been breastfeeding for 18 months and it worked perfectly (including the great side effect of no periods that both gave me). Then our son stopped feeding overnight and the month prior to falling pregnant, I had my first period, since I had fallen pregnant with our son. I had been on the normal contraceptive pill for over three years with no issues prior to coming off the pill and planning my pregnancy with ds, but then we were always careful to use condoms if I had been sick/ needed antibiotics. I will say that it was much harder to remember to take my pill, when I had a baby keeping me up all night. I actually handed that responsibility to my dh when ds was tiny, as I kept forgetting to take it at the same time. Dh would set an alarm and wake me to take my pill every morning, when he was working away he would call me to remind me.

HerRoyalFattyness · 11/09/2016 20:58

My wonderful DS2 was a pill failure. I took it perfectly, but didn't realise sickness could affect it. I'm now on the implant. I've only had one period since may, other than not knowing if I'm going to get a period or not I've had no problems with it though. I was tempted by a coil but I'd heard of failures with it and wanted the most effective thing possible. So implant it was.

MoonlightMedicine · 11/09/2016 20:59

Yes on microgynon. No illness and took it religiously at the same time exactly every evening. Was on it for a year before falling pregnant. It was horrendous.

HappyAxolotl · 11/09/2016 21:02

There must have been a Pill failure a month in my 6th Form year group. At least.

Of course, teens aren't always the most organised people and user errors are incredibly easy to do. I've met adults who didn't realise antibiotics affected Pill efficacy - until that missed period that is!

iloveredwine · 11/09/2016 21:04

I got pregnant on the pill but had been taking anti biotics. Didn't even think until I never got next period!!!!

greenandblackssurvivalkit · 11/09/2016 21:05

www.optionsforsexualhealth.org/birth-control-pregnancy/birth-control-options/effectiveness

COCP is 92% effective with real use. So, if you take it for ten years, the stats say you've likely one pregnancy.

www.fpa.org.uk/sites/default/files/your-contraceptive-choices-chart.pdf Gives over 99% effective for the implant- so statistically, you could be on it for 100 years to have the same risk of pregnancy as the combined pill.

"Natural" family planning has a theoretical efficacy of 99%! And what do we call people who use that? (as the old joke goes...)

Parents! Wink

Sunshineonacloudyday · 11/09/2016 21:13

No never.

Sunshineonacloudyday · 11/09/2016 21:15

I do think about what I put in my body will it give me the runs etc etc. I have never gone wrong with the pill because I read the instructions and I have been taking it since I was 17.

Sunshineonacloudyday · 11/09/2016 21:16

MoonlightMedicine you got pregnant while you was on the pill.

BadToTheBone · 11/09/2016 21:34

Yes, he's sat in front of me playing on his Xbox, the best accident in the world ever, lol

I'd been on the pill for 15 years and had been bloody awful at taking it. Then at 33 I was on antibiotics but thought I'd wouldn't get pg coz I'd been so crap for the previous 15 years. Turns out, I was wrong.

I had the copper coil which I couldn't get along with so now have the mirena and although it was painful getting it in, I'm so pleased I have, sorted my awful periods out and that's it for 5 years.

dimdommilpot · 11/09/2016 21:45

I did with DD1.

Sunshineonacloudyday · 11/09/2016 21:54

BadToTheBone what pill was you on for 15 years?
