to ask if you have got pregnant whilst on the Pill?

I had decided to go on to the pill once my implant expired as I'd being having numerous problems with it; mostly completely unpredictable periods. Though also possibly weight gain and mood swings. (But possibly I'm just moody and chubby).

However, after talking to my Mum about it - I'm completely off put. It turns out she got pregnant three times on the pill; 26 years ago, 14 years ago and 8 years ago. She says its only effective in ideal circumstances and that if you are ill (namely sickness or diarrhoea) it is far less likely to work. She has recently had a coil, and says it was excrutiatingly painful, so another option gone.

My implant has now expired, so I'm really keen on finding an alternative.
NHS online says the pill is 99% effective, but clearly not in my immediate family.

May I ask if you or anyone you know has got pregnant whilst on the Pill? Is it just my Mum and her super-human fertility?

I got pregnant twice on the pill but have had no issues at all with the coil and have had that for the last 7 years (changed)

BadToTheBone · 12/09/2016 00:57

Sunshine I'm trying hard to remember, estrelle, or something like that. Available both UK and the US, as I lived there too during that time. My ds is now 15, I went back on it briefly until dd was born 11 years ago, then dh had the snip and I have a cool to regulate my periods (get rid of them, hopefully!)

elliejjtiny · 12/09/2016 02:05

I did, 3 times. I have Ehlers Danlos syndrome though which can cause certain drugs including the pill to not work properly (I didn't realise that at the time).

One of the midwives at the hospital said that 60% of all babies born in this country are unplanned.

Simmi1 · 12/09/2016 04:50

Wow that's a very high number Ellie! I'd say out of the people I know maybe 10 per cent or less have unplanned pregnancies.

OfficerMeowMeowFuzzyface · 12/09/2016 08:23

Just wanted to say that I got on horribly with the implant but loved my Mirena. I know that not everyone finds this but for me the hormones really did seem to be more localised and I didn't get the effects on mood that I'd had on both pill and implant. So don't necessarily rule it out on the grounds that they're both progesterone!

Full disclosure: having it put in was awful but, for me, totally worth it. It was the only form of contraception that I've ever been totally happy with.

LucLuc · 12/09/2016 08:48

I did! I was 17, so came as a massive shock. Not only that, but I was 'spotting' each month, and had a trim size 10 figure and no bump. I went to the doctor only because I was so run down....imagine my shock when he said I was 17wks gone!!! Anyhow. I refuse to go near the pill now, so use a condom instead! :)

DrDreReturns · 12/09/2016 08:55

A friend's girlfriend got pregnant on the pill - she was taking antibiotics at the same time which, I think, can stop it working.

Minesril · 12/09/2016 09:13

Just read the link about twins with different fathers - mind blown!

Never fallen pregnant on pill, but I double up with condoms. Took me about a year to conceive after coming off so maybe not that fertile!

TriJo · 12/09/2016 09:19

Never fallen pregnant on the pill thankfully! On Cerazette at the moment while I'm breastfeeding, a second DC wouldn't be the end of the world by any stretch of the imagination if it happened...

Farmmummy · 12/09/2016 09:23

Another cerezette victim here and was using it correctly at the time due to medical issues and it not being "the right time" (still very much loved and wanted when we found out) then again when on the evra patch sadly lost my twins, ironically when ttc dd2 it took ages Confused

aintnothinbutagstring · 12/09/2016 10:07

Been taking cilest on and off for 10 years, coming off only to concieve my two DC. No issues, even when I've forgotten to take a pill on occasions (so taking 2 pills the next day). And I'd say I'm OK fertility-wise as conceived my DC very quickly, so I see Cilest as (touch wood) pretty reliable.

HairsprayBabe · 12/09/2016 10:49

I got pregnant on Dianette at 18 but ended in MC at about 7-8 weeks.

If you take it properly it works 99% of the time. I was a sloppy teenager and took it lazily.

I had the copper coil for 5 years, gave me heavy and painful periods, moved to the hormonal coil 4 months ago and I am much much happier - Jaydess 3 year coil light and painless periods rather than Marina.

NobodyKnows · 12/09/2016 10:57

I fell pregnant on the pill twice, one I had an MC and the other a termination, I've also fallen pregnant while using the injection. I hated the implant and coil (mirena) so have had my bits tied since having DS but do live in fear that even that isn't 100%

Lainieslife · 14/11/2016 19:55

don't really know how to make a new forum so thought I would jump in....

I've been feeling sick
Tired...to the point that I had to take a week off work to sleep. And earlier I went food shopping came home and fell asleep.
I've got sore beasts .
I've been super emotional...ANYTHING sets me off lol. I cried earlier because my mate couldn't meet me for a coffee haha
And about two weeks ago I had a few little spots of blood and nothing more.
I have definitely gained weight and in my eyes I shouldn't be, I go to the gym, eat clean and I've got a very round tum (not around the sides) and also when I lay down it's still there and when I lightly press on my tummy, from my belly button I can feel pressure where I push and there a hard bit. When I stand it also feels hard at the base
Everything right now is pointing to pregnancy and I "feel" pregnant.

I am on the implant, and have been for years and never had anything like this.

A doctor done a pregnancy test which was negative and just said "well it's rare to happen, the rest is negative so we will go with that"

Ive read stories about it happening, a lot more than I would of liked lol. I have done a few tests...all negative. I've spoke to one doctor and got the "oh that's rare to happen so doubt it's that" and that was it. I just don't know where to go from here and what to do!! Any advice would be great

elliejjtiny · 14/11/2016 20:24

3 times on the mini pill. One was a user error and the other 2 were proper pill failures. Still don't know how ds5 happened as I had horrific periods at the time and was having them every 2 weeks for about 10days each time.

listsandbudgets · 14/11/2016 20:45

Dd is 11. she was conceived while I was on the pill ( amd I'm very glad she was)

steff13 · 14/11/2016 21:03

Twice! And once on Mirena, but I miscarried that one.

PrincessHairyMclary · 14/11/2016 21:11

I also got pregnant on the pill am allergic to latex and was with a steady bf.

What I didn't know until embarrassingly recently is that sperm can live inside you for up to 7 days which explains a lot really.

I had taken my pill properly, had sex and then had a 3 day stomach upset when I assume my pill wasn't absorbed as it should have been, ovulated and the remaining buggers found tier way to the egg (love Dd to bits though Grin.

Knowing this now I wouldn't solely rely on the pill unless I was open to the potential of having a child.

LouBlue1507 · 14/11/2016 21:18

I don't believe half the people who say they got pregnant on the pill got pregnant because the pill is in affective, either they took it incorrectly or had sex after antibiotics, sickness etc. Some pills have very strict timings too, mine was within a 3 hour window.

I was on the pill for 7 years and never fell pregnant. The first month off the pill, I became pregnant straight away on the first deed!

nichito · 14/11/2016 21:36

It's daft to say three you don't believe people purely on the basis that it didn't happen to you, LouBlue.

I have got pregnant on Cerazette twice in one year after taking it obsessively accurately (I don't think I was ever more than about 14 or 15 seconds late, never mind an hour or so) and with no antibiotic/illness interference. Doctor had no problem at all believing this happened, and maintained that some women's bodies simply don't reliably absorb the hormonal input.

Tryingtostayyoung · 14/11/2016 22:01

Bit TMI but I was in the pill, took it religiously. One day took my pill as usual, had sex in the evening and then at bedtime had diarrhoea. My doctor said this would have made me unprotected and I had no clue.

Tryingtostayyoung · 14/11/2016 22:02

Sorry pressed enter by accident... this resulted in my DD.

Hestheoneandonly · 14/11/2016 22:12

Yes on microgygon. Now we can't seem to manage it to get a sibling (now musing about going back on pill)

mum2Bomg · 14/11/2016 22:17

I took the pill and mini pill over 20years and didn't get pregnant until I stopped taking them.

onecrazycook · 14/11/2016 22:32

Yes, I did and I didn't miss one. Neither was I ill. My implant was the best contraceptive I ever had but I had it taken out when I started to lose my hair as the doc thought it was that. Turns out the hairloss is probably from endometriosis. Stick with the implant if you can
