to ask if you have got pregnant whilst on the Pill?

I had decided to go on to the pill once my implant expired as I'd being having numerous problems with it; mostly completely unpredictable periods. Though also possibly weight gain and mood swings. (But possibly I'm just moody and chubby).

However, after talking to my Mum about it - I'm completely off put. It turns out she got pregnant three times on the pill; 26 years ago, 14 years ago and 8 years ago. She says its only effective in ideal circumstances and that if you are ill (namely sickness or diarrhoea) it is far less likely to work. She has recently had a coil, and says it was excrutiatingly painful, so another option gone.

My implant has now expired, so I'm really keen on finding an alternative.
NHS online says the pill is 99% effective, but clearly not in my immediate family.

May I ask if you or anyone you know has got pregnant whilst on the Pill? Is it just my Mum and her super-human fertility?

I know they are deadly unpopular but I use condoms. No unplanned pregnancies, no hormonal reactions or worrying about it's effectiveness.

I have conceived 4 times and I actually prefer condom sex as it's less messy Blush.

I got pregnant 'on the pill' but only because I wasn't great at remembering to take it every single day and it turns out missing just one or two a month actually makes a difference. Was a happy 'accident' though!

Soozikinzi · 10/09/2016 22:35

I am the same as your mum I got pregnant twice on it because I had sickness and d and once while breastfeeding .I was given the pill to take after first period and first period never came - well not until after finishing feeding next baby!

WeAllHaveWings · 10/09/2016 22:37

I know lots of women on the pill for many many years who have never gotten pregnant. I was on it for 19 years with no scares.

DSIL got pregnant on mini pill after an upset stomach.

MrsJayy · 10/09/2016 22:39

I did yeah and on Depro i was sterillised after baby 2

cafenoirbiscuit · 10/09/2016 22:41

Me. On mini pill.

irelephant · 10/09/2016 22:43

Yup age 16 fun times. Positive I took it spot on aswell.

gabsdot · 10/09/2016 22:51

My SIL got pregnant with twins while on the pill

RubbleBubble00 · 10/09/2016 22:53

had two coils fitted pre children. Both were done at hospital as family planning send everyone to hospital for fitting. Dr numbed cervix with lidocaine injection as hadn't had children less stretchy cervix, so no pain at all

BitchQueen90 · 10/09/2016 22:59

I did, but it was because I had a virus and vomited a fair bit so obviously it didn't work properly. Since then I've been on the mini pill (for 2 years) and take it like clockwork. Had no pregnancy scares and I'm happy with this form of contraception (learnt my lesson re sickness). Mind you, I'm single so I'm not having regular sex anyway.

alltouchedout · 10/09/2016 23:00

Yes. Twice. In my early 20s (had an abortion) and in my early 30s (had ds3). Even though I hate the mirena I have now I stick with it as the failure rate is so very low.

DelicatePreciousThing1 · 10/09/2016 23:11

Never.

SanityClause · 10/09/2016 23:16

I fell pregnant on the mirena.

The GP said if 100 women using the mirena had sex for 100 years, one of them would fall pregnant. That was me.

Incywincyspinster · 10/09/2016 23:17

I got pregnant on the pill. I took it religiously (alongside compulsory medication so was always on time & every day. I've been off it for 3 years and can't get pregnant at all now. :(

maggiethemagpie · 10/09/2016 23:19

Mirena can migrate to make it less effective Sanity - mine migrated into my c section scar I was told I was lucky I hadn't fallen pregnant. I only found out when I went to get it removed for a sterilisation.

IJustAteTheKidsFoodAgain · 10/09/2016 23:20

Yes. Was shit at taking it though.

JulietteL · 10/09/2016 23:24

Don't write off the coil. Yes, the insertion can be uncomfortable (especially if you haven't had children) but no more than bad period pain or a smear test. And then you don't have to worry about it for years! I've had three inserted (long story) and plan to have another after the baby arrives.

user1471443957 · 10/09/2016 23:25

Say 100,000 women are taking the pill. It's 99% effective so 1000 of them will get pregnant in a year. That's just an example. There will be loads more than 100,000 on the pill so you're bound to find plenty of Mnetters it hasn't worked for.

sglodion · 10/09/2016 23:26

I did on microgynon. Have a coil for the last 2 years, no issues with that at all.

Marmighty · 10/09/2016 23:26

Yes, was on pill which meant I didn't have periods, which meant when I was going through a particularly stressful time at work, long hours and not looking after myself, I didn't realise I was pregnant until 5.5 months! She's nearly two and I left that job :)

kateyjane · 10/09/2016 23:34

YES! Though she is now my wonderful beautiful 14 year old. I had a sickness bug, didn't even think about how it might have affected my pill (at least 7 days later!) wouldn't be without her for the world, l'm not religious but life moves in mysterious ways!

DrWhy · 10/09/2016 23:43

No, I was on the combined pill 18 years without an issue. It is very clear that if you are sick particularly shortly after you've taken it you need to use other protection for a week, if you miss one or if you take one outside the timeframe and so on there are guidelines on what you need to do - I always erred on the most cautious side of these. Some medications can stop it working as can some herbal supplements. When I'd had sex within a day or two and then missed a pill or been sick I took the morning after pill - only 3 or 4 times, not a common thing.
I did wonder if I wasn't hugely fertile and that's why I'd never had an issue on the pill. I then got pregnant the first month off it. Blush
I'm sure there are people who take it perfectly and fall pregnant. If it's 99% effective then one in a hundred women will fall pregnant on it, however as the stories above show its often not being strict with following the rules on when to take it and what will make it ineffective that causes it to fail.

LucyBabs · 10/09/2016 23:43

Never got pregnant while taking the pill but I got pregnant 3 years after having a copper coil fitted.
Apparently it " fell out of place" after a heavy period.
I really liked having the coil.. No hormones or side effects
I'm back on the pill for now, slowly building up the courage to get another copper coil Grin

I'm surprised by how many are saying they got pregnant while taking the pill but in most cases admitting they weren't even taking it properly, so it's user error surely?

JellyBelli · 10/09/2016 23:45

Both me and my SIL did. She thinks she had a bit of an upset stomach one day and blames that. I didnt.

katemess12 · 10/09/2016 23:49

Nope.

I've been on the pill since I was 14 (wasn't having sex at that age, but still), and never once got pregnant whilst taking it. I got pregnant one month after stopping it though, despite being told it can take up to 12 months for the hormones to clear out of your system.

If you take it at roughly the same time every day, you're extremely, extremely unlikely to get pregnant whilst taking it. I take it every morning, with a window of no more than an hour. Super easy. Just take it with your breakfast or your morning coffee. It's never been forgettable to me, because I take other things at the same time.
