Just that really, certain person I know complains about not having enough but they have no health conditions and have enough to get by. No reason why they couldn't work.

Yabvu. Do you want yo work when you are late 60s? It wouldn't be easy to get a job at that age and why should people have to work until they drop? Someone who is late 60s has probably worked since they were 16 and worked for 50 years.

Not that simple. A lot of us will have to work into our late-60s anyway to get our pensions. However, as long as I am fit and healthy, once I am beyond whatever retirement age will be by then, I would certainly want to have a part-time job for as long as I am fit and well - not just to top up my meagre pension but because I would want to keep fit and well mentally, get out and about and see people, feel I was useful and not surplus to requirements. Even something like three afternoons a week in a bookshop. I'd love that.

This is someone that lives near a huge outlet village. It would be very easy to get s part time job.

OK let me rephrase that "try to get a job". She hasn't even tried but lots of the shops around here are always looking for people.

You sound delightful and there is no way I would want to be working when I am late 60's or 70's.

How do you know how you would feel by then ? I am 50's and just the last year or so finding doing anything outside of work a bit of a struggle as I am mentally and physically drained much of the time. Your body starts to do cruel tricks that you never thought it would when you are younger.

Maybe she doesn't want to try for a job plenty of people moan about having no money and work would you expect them to work harder? Moaning can be irritating and draining to listen to say to her so &so shop is looking for staff why dont you apply but i can guarantee most shops are not hiring 60 somethings

Oh well I won't get any support here, I think she's very entitled to expect to have money for holidays and dining out often on the taxpayer when she should of saved for her retirement if she wanted to do expensive things in retirement.

Anyfucker that's great in theory but as I am in my early 30s I don't think I will have any option about working into my late 60s. As far as I know, retirement age is already 67 for my age group, and is only going up. I can easily see it being 70+. I'm a teacher, I have no clue how I will be able to do it. It's not fair to say that late 60s is physically too old to work for one generation but not the next. It is or it isn't.

I sort of agree. My mother is in her 70's and still works. She's comfortably off but wants to keep active, talk to people who aren't ancient and keep up with current affairs. She cycles to work as well. I know it's not possible for everyone but actually, keeping active and mentally occupied seems like a good way to live happier and possibly longer.

Jobs for people in their 60's are difficult to get.

My dp is 58. He was in a serious accident three years ago and had to stop doing what he'd been doing - lorry driving - due to his physical health deteriorating.

He spent a year trying to find a job. He's now on nmw and hates it. But he's still desperately trying to find another job with better prospects.

OP do you mean everyone who moans about money should get a job from students to 95 year-olds? Everyone? Or just pensioners?

(The pensioners by the way are the only ones who are likely to have paid in for 50 years and NOT taken out anywhere near as much as they would take out had they been 30 today)

I do think people should work. I work and will be working til I am 70. But it isn't that easy especially as you are older. When ex DP was trying to get a job aged 64 no-one would look at him. We live in a youth culture and ageism means anyone over 50 really struggles unless in a large organization. Recruiters, (often born in the 80's), see DoB 1958 or 1949 on the application and bin it.

You're being ridiculous, OP. There are lots of people on benefits who are ABLE to work but don't, for whatever reason.
