AIBU?

To ask what would you do with a £13k windfall?

On the back of another thread, just wondering what people would do if they unexpectedly came into that amount of money? I would be torn between sensible middle aged options like kitchens and cars and not sensible midlife crisis options like going on some worldwide trip. AIBU to ask WWYD?

I would use it to pay part of our new extension.

I always put at least half of any windfall into the investment fund - either paying off some of the mortgage or towards another buy-to-let.

If it really was an unexpected one I might put the remaining half towards my next car budge, so I could buy a better one than I would otherwise have done.

re-roof the house & if there was anything left over (unlikely) put it towards a car which is less that 15 years old!

Anymore than that would go straight off the mortgage.

I'm another one who would get the driveway done, as well as a big holiday, the rest to go in savings.

Our already quite shit driveway got totally wrecked when we had the extension built and desperately needs doing, but firstly we haven't got round to getting any quotes and I'm not sure we can afford it currently due to spending a bit much on said extension - it's the next big thing to be done when the finances look a bit more healthy - it will cost at least £3-5k, possibly more due to being quite large.

I'd say a nice long haul family holiday but judging by the prices of foreign holidays for next year, £13k probably wouldn't even get our family of 6 the holiday of our dreams.

Pay off debts, buy something nice for our Mums, have a holiday (but not a massive one), treat ourselves a little, and split the remainder into our savings for a rainy day, and a savings/trust account for our daughter.

That's about a quarter of my mortgage so I'd probably put it to that. Boring but the sooner it's paid off the sooner we can spend on all the other stuff mentioned above.

I got 9K from a long lost uncle I'd never met (sounds like a bad film plot but it's true) problem was they gave it to me when I was 18 i think I spent most of it on booze, debt and food Sad Devastated now that I didn't even go on holiday with it or use it for a house deposit... Especially as I ended up homeless! Sod's law that Confused

Pay off debt first then house renovation. Maybe £1k on some treats (new tent, some nice prints for the walls, fun trip out).

I inherited £10,000 yesterday completely out of the blue. I am going to pay some debt, get a van for my DP and get passports for us all so we can save up for a little holiday abroad. Sorry if I sound like I'm showing off. I'm still struggling to believe it's true.

I'd knock it off the mortgage.
Boring!

In my position, pay off some debts, use it towards a house deposit.. if I weren't in this situation. Holidays, definitely.

Or, given how broody I am at the moment, would use to facilitate a potential DC3 as that would cover 2 years nursery fees, making it financially a little bit more in reach.

Mortgage, mortgage and mortgage again. Grin
The whole lot.
Unless you have any other debts like credit cards.

You very rarely get windfalls in this life.

(this will out me if anyone here goes on a certain family history forum!)
I would like to get DNA tests for all the people I can trace currently bearing my surname, including some in the USA & Canada. I know most of those in one particular region in the UK will be descended from my 4x or 5x gt grandfather, but there is another group with the same surname based in another area and I'd love to know if there is a connection some way (300-500 years) further back.

Those who would spend it on a driveway, what sort of driveway would you get? Very interested in this topic ATM. Why are driveways so expensive??
