AIBU?

To ask what would you do with a £13k windfall?

On the back of another thread, just wondering what people would do if they unexpectedly came into that amount of money? I would be torn between sensible middle aged options like kitchens and cars and not sensible midlife crisis options like going on some worldwide trip. AIBU to ask WWYD?

I did. Tax refund. It's in an ISA to help fund kids when they get to college/house/car age.

I can't blow money on holidays, house, cars etc, it's just not something that I do.

MamOfTwo The OP requested deletion. Probably realised it wasn't the best idea broadcasting the fact that you found £13k dirty money in your back garden.

debt payoff for most of it
a garden office/shed (I know)
and the disposable income now not going to debt payoff would be saved for a holiday

I'd have to think about it as there are several options...

Option 1) Pay £10k off my mortgage, £3k kitchen.
Option 2) Have garden done, fix the car problems, new windows.
Option 3) Put it towards a 3rd bedroom (but couldn't pay the rest, so forget that!)
Option 4) Pay off brothers debts (loan only), bank it to use as and when.

Knock down the wall between the living room and the hallway, new kitchen, Amazing Spaces style pub shed in the garden if enough left over.

This actually happened to me about 2 years ago.
I inherited £14k completely unexpectedly.

We didn't have any debt so we spent some of it on:
A new boiler,
A new garden fence,
Getting the trees in the garden cut back. (we have a largish garden with a lot of trees)
A new bathroom,
Two holidays.

.....and we did get the drive mended

We've got about £8k left I think

Sabbatical. I've spent my whole life being responsible. At this point, I could do with a blow out on a trip around the world.

Jack Daniels honey and fast cars, the rest I'd waste

Or maybe a new driveway

I'd leave and never look back.

I'd keep some for a holiday - I think either Florida or Japan, then get our back garden done (get fake grass, fence sorted out etc) and maybe our front drive sorted too. Then if any left save it or put it back into the mortgage.

I'm on mat leave atm and going into work tomorrow to discuss potential settlement for leaving (I am happy to do so as I have been offered a different opportunity elsewhere)...so this may well be a reality for me soon (fingers crossed). Debts first...then about £700 on furniture and decor for new house I'm moving into next month...I'm going to buy some exercise machines because I'm a single ma so no time to.get to the gym. Girly holiday with the bestie and.tbh probably put the rest I'm savings
I'm actually quite boring....

I'd have a proper holiday - haven't been on one for years. I would sort the house out, maybe a new kitchen, definitely get someone in to repaint bits of the house and sort out our mini-garden. A new bed and mattress for me and DH.

Cocklodger · 08/09/2016 00:45

Probably just put it in a savings account.
We're not short of money, we're emigrating early next year, selling our properties and businesses. We don't need anything, working too much to go on holiday and have pretty new cars, so I'd be spending for the sake of it really...

Pay of some of our debts , finish of extension. Sort out teeth! New blind for kitchen. Fix broken window! Oh the boring list goes on and on.

I would turn my babyish nursery room into a grown up boys bedroom for my 4 year old, keep some aside for a Lapland and Disney trip, a trip for just me and she (weekend in UK?) And if there was anymore then I'd put it towards a new bigger family car! Dreaming....

A car (second hand but newer than my old banger)

A naice holiday

Revamp of the back garden

DIY in the house

Those of you wanting a loft conversion, 13k won't touch the sides I'm afraid. That was our experience anyway.
