To ask what would you do with a £13k windfall?

On the back of another thread, just wondering what people would do if they unexpectedly came into that amount of money? I would be torn between sensible middle aged options like kitchens and cars and not sensible midlife crisis options like going on some worldwide trip. AIBU to ask WWYD?

If it's stuck in the back garden wall......leave it there.
If not.... Barbados here I come Grin

WyfOfBathe · 07/09/2016 22:22

Long trip to the country DH comes from, anywhere from £2-5k. Then put the rest in savings - some for the kids (maybe about 2k each) and some towards getting a mortage

Extend our house into the garage and have the beautiful kitchen of our dreams...

kittykittykitty5 · 07/09/2016 22:25

Pay off debts and go on holiday. I have not had a relaxing beach holiday since 1988!!

gillybeanz · 07/09/2016 22:26

Spend it and have lots of fun, as have never had debt for fun stuff. Would be good to splash out and not worry.

BastardGoDarkly · 07/09/2016 22:26

Get my teeth done.

New car.

Trailer tent Grin

MaddyHatter · 07/09/2016 22:27

it would go in the kitty for our static caravan fund.

HemlockStarglimmer · 07/09/2016 22:27

For sure a new bathroom. I struggle to get in and out of the bath. A shower would be fab.

Marmalade85 · 07/09/2016 22:27

Put it towards my savings for a house deposit.

TheTartOfAsgard · 07/09/2016 22:29

I'd use it to finally finish my degree. Any left over would go into the kids savings

EllsTeeth · 07/09/2016 22:31

Make our lives easier by keeping our lovely nanny on for longer than we currently have budget for!

QueenLizIII · 07/09/2016 22:32

2nd hand car.
Some towards deposit.
extended holiday.

RunnyRattata · 07/09/2016 22:33

I'd get my teeth done. There probably wouldn't be any left after that.

elQuintoConyo · 07/09/2016 22:33

Open a donkey sanctuary. Nothing would make me - or the donkeys- happier.

CoolToned · 07/09/2016 22:34

Travel. I'm in Australia so I'd go back to Europe and leisurely shop.

I'll get a YSL crossbody and a Balenciaga City Bag. And maybe a designer leather jacket.

Do I have money left?

But realistically it will probably go to a house deposit.

greenscarves · 07/09/2016 22:34

Lots of teeth getting done! And loving the originality of a donkey sanctuary!

I would put it towards a stonking diamond ring like the one my mother and step father sold and I should have inherited from my grandmother. Note towards. 15 years still angry.

IAmSugarTits · 07/09/2016 22:36

A driveway of course!

And a decent security system

whywonthedgehogssharethehedge · 07/09/2016 22:40

Right now pay off credit card and buy an automatic car.

engineersthumb · 07/09/2016 22:40

I'd make sure my wife had fresh flowers every week. Half would probably go in the bank against rainy days the other half in the kids savings account. I've always said I'd like a new car but to be honest I don't tthink anyone would recognise me if I got out of a shiny car and a new shirt collar!

HicDraconis · 07/09/2016 22:41

Mortgage every time. That would be $26k here which would cut one of the mortgages in half. We would then have lower repayments, so could either overpay and pay it off faster, or have more disposable income each month which would go into savings once the maximum overpayment amount was reached.

I never saw the point of owing money at 6% but saving at 3%. Any windfall money used to buy treats is essentially borrowing it at 6% because if you didn't spend it, you would have reduced your loan by that amount.

Possibly with UK interest rates my answer would be different but I'm not in the UK 😄

ChiefClerkDrumknott · 07/09/2016 22:44

A new horsebox Grin

IAmSugarTits · 07/09/2016 22:45

Engineersthumb - I'm slightly in love

MamOfTwo · 07/09/2016 22:47

Can't find the original thread - has it vanished? I would spend a lot on our falling-to-bits house and then a holiday too.
