We had chosen a name. She had a name! Now that she's here, he is refusing to call her the name we had picked, Sophia and is saying she looks like an Audrey or an Arden. He appears to be leaning towards Arden. He's refusing to call her Sophia and I'm at the end of my tether. She's two week old and she doesn't have a name. I wanted Sophia Alice or Sophia Skye. He keeps babbling on about how popular it is and how it doesn't feel like her name and that he knows too many little Sophias and Sophies. It's completely thrown me off track as we had planned to get her letters painted for her name and my parents are asking the name and everytime I say Sophia, he says we haven't really chosen and it's just getting to me! He wants Audrey Delilah or Arden Katherine. AIBU to say that we chose Sophia so she's Sophia now?

Just go and register whatever name you want asap and before he does!
Fwiw I know of too many Sophias or Sophies.

Haha zombies. my user name is two names my husband refused to contemplate for our daughter but which I really liked: Honey and Lucinda. The first is a "stripper's name"and the "too posh",apparently.

His suggestions remind me of a joke -
"what made Elizabeth Arden?"
Max Factor!

Arianna is a pretty name but my DS is almost 3 and in the 0-4 age group of people we know there are 4 Ariana/Ariannas. So it is quite popular at the moment which may put your DH off (if him going of Sophia was because of popularity).

My DD(10) is a Sophia and FWIW she LOVES her name... and she's the only one in her school of 280, and I only know of one other who's 15 now.

I think it depends where you live re popularity. The best way to tell is to look at people you know. I get the feeling it might be a more "trendy" name in middle class areas, from what I've seen.

Arianna would also make me think of Ariana Grande, especially as she's so popular these days. I think you need to find a name you both LOVE, even if it takes time.

Sophia is pretty - could that maybe be her middle name as a compromise?

I disagree that it matters if it's a popular name, if we have another DD I'll be making a strong case for Amelia despite it being one of the most popular at the moment as I like it. I can't say I've come across many Sophias recently!

How about Eden, Lucy, Saskia, Rhiannion, Katherine, Lydia, Laura, Lara... There are so many lovely names out there and you have got plenty of time to decide. Sophie is a wee bit common at the moment.

It's also dull dull dull to have to spell your name out. Every. Single. Time. And then enter in a discussion re said name. You also get called other names as no one could really remember it so oddly people would pick another random name beginning with the same letter! ( it still happens) Seriously!

If you both like Arianna are your older two able to help pick the middle name?

Don't go Arianna Alice or Arianna Isabelle or Arianna anything starting with a vowel. People are lazy with pronunciation and will add a random R. It'll drive you nuts - well it would me. Arianna Ralice Arianna Risabelle. Not nice. Grace goes well.

Evelyn is lovely and you could have Evie, eve or Evelyn.

Where you live is important as a name can get butchered by an accent.

We have 450 children in our school. There's only one Sophia that I can think of off-hand.

Also like the name Arianwen, means blessed or fair silver in Welsh. Similar to Arianna in sound but less likely to be associated with Ariana Grande.

Don't let him go and register the name or he might register whatever he fancies. That has happened to two very close relatives. One conveniently forgot (turned out fine the best later on to an unfortunate celebrity having the same) the agreed name, and the other just put his foot down and switched first and middle names (child never used properly first name anyway).
