We had chosen a name. She had a name! Now that she's here, he is refusing to call her the name we had picked, Sophia and is saying she looks like an Audrey or an Arden. He appears to be leaning towards Arden. He's refusing to call her Sophia and I'm at the end of my tether. She's two week old and she doesn't have a name. I wanted Sophia Alice or Sophia Skye. He keeps babbling on about how popular it is and how it doesn't feel like her name and that he knows too many little Sophias and Sophies. It's completely thrown me off track as we had planned to get her letters painted for her name and my parents are asking the name and everytime I say Sophia, he says we haven't really chosen and it's just getting to me! He wants Audrey Delilah or Arden Katherine. AIBU to say that we chose Sophia so she's Sophia now?

'Sophia' is on my ds class register twice there's also 2 more in neighbouring class and we have friends with a further 2. Down the street there's one and a colleague has one

We are a small town fgs!! They are everywhere here. fuzzy I'm confused why you would think the name is just confined to 'baby groups'

So, you do think it's really popular, Mum?

I think you can be confident that Renesmè Chuckle isn't "everywhere" Grin

If you're married he could register her.

I'd say Audrey Deliliah also indicates that naming is not his strongest suit. Try to swing him back to Sophia if poss (also never come across any in recent years), or go back to the drawing board, subtly taking the lead!

How about 'Aria'

I know a new baby with this and it's a compromise

I like the name Sophia,but it's popular!

Renesmè Chuckie?

That was my guess too :o

Unfortunately yes you are. You need to both agree on her name.

Fwiw, I like Sophia as a name, but I know two and would avoid it for being too common (but then we went with unusual).
It's unfair if you had already 'agreed', but if you dislike his current choices so much, you just need to start again.

Fwiw, I don't get how babies suit/don't suit names at birth - most names seem fine once you are used to them.

Aria was one of his choices early on but whilst I liked it we both eventually dismissed as too trendy. Maybe I could put Arianna to him? See whether he likes that.

What about Arianne or Arianna?

Aria (however you choose to spell it) is a lovely name, but there will always be someone who thinks it's due to GoT.

Right well he's home now, so time to start grilling him about Sophia's name? Or should I leave him?

Can you write a completely new list and pick a totally separate one?

Report

Grilling not necessary. Surely a simple explanation that you are upset about Sophia, but equally dislike his choices so could he respect gor opinion (as you do his) and both go back to drawing board?

user1473008638 YABU to keep referring to her as Sophia...

HWBU to call a baby Audrey or Arden.

You need to both agree on a name!

We have a lot of Sophia's at school it's very popular. I love arianna or Adriana. I actually quite like Arden is he set on an A? Start discussing yes but I do think you have to budge from Sophia..

Is your daughters middle name Annabell?

Can't you have Audrey Sophia (visions of Audrey Hepburn filling my mind here - and how musical it sounds . . . )

Sophia Audrey also works.

And you can call her Janet at home so neither of you gets to use your favourite.
