How the hell do people clean bathroom only once a week?!

Pinkbabe1 · 01/09/2016 21:05

I'm genuinely interested here because I've read many a MN thread of ways in which to save time at home and almost always, people say clean the bathroom once a week! Now, I clean my bathroom everyday and even doing that the amount of scum I clean away each day surely would be unhygienic after a whole week? It leaves me baffled, I'm genuinely interested to know if the people that clean once a week have really dirty bathrooms by the end of it?! To put into perspective I thoroughly wipe the sink, toilet and bath surround - spray the bath and tiles and wash off before bleaching the toilet and wiping the floor which takes all of 10 mins. How do people get away with it?!

I clean mine everyday, I would need to evacuate if I left it a week Grin You know we all have different standards just depends on what your comfortable with and how many people live with you. No judgement here Wink

StrumpersPlunkett · 01/09/2016 22:48

Truly Love this thread. Thanks all truly reminds me why I like to be here rather than on some fluffy agree with every post so as not to offend anyone websites.

Ps op if you are still reading your would probably implode at our "if it's yellow let it mellow if it's brown flush it down rule" 😬

Pilgit · 01/09/2016 22:51

I don't clean the bathroom. I have a cleaner that comes in once a week. Does it need doing more than that? No, apart from the loo occasionally. Maybe I have lower standards. Maybe I don't think a little bit of dirt hurt anyone. Maybe the bathroom just doesn't get that dirty day to day. I encourage the children to clean the sink as the go. Bath is sprayed down after a bath some scum doesn't accumulate.

PileOfPasta · 01/09/2016 22:52

We live in a hard water area too. And the kids get toothpaste everywhere. And DH moults body hair everywhere. And we have smooth white floor tiles. all these things mean I clean the bathroom every 1 to 2 days, or when a visitor is coming. Nothing worse than sitting on the loo gazing at a carpet of your host's pubes.

I remember being a student and cleaning once every 6 months or so. Those were the days!

Notso · 01/09/2016 22:52

I've never really noticed any scum anywhere. Even when DS1 had a bath after a particularly muddy scout camp.
I wipe toilets a couple of times a day and the sink upstairs most nights and rinse the bath after it's been used. Floor get done once a weekish.
The shower, bath, shelves, windows and mirrors get done when I can be bothered.

I want to know where the dust comes from.

coffeetasteslikeshit · 01/09/2016 22:52

the amount of scum I clean away each day surely would be unhygienic after a whole week?

No it wouldn't.

And herein lies the problem in my opinion. So many people who are scared shitless of germs.

Xmasbaby11 · 01/09/2016 22:54

We struggle to clean ours every week. I can't get my head around every day! I clean the toilet quickly most days and wipe round the sink a couple of times a week. I have quick wipe or spray round in the shower and bath but don't use chemicals. A deep clean is probably done once a month. We have two bathrooms and the dc are 2 and 4. I would love to say I did it every week! But when I visit friends' houses theor bathrooms are on a par with ours - not dirty but not spotless. I think we're about normal.

LaurieMarlow · 01/09/2016 22:55

What actually constitutes unhygienic? Because I'm sure the OP would faint at the sight of my bathroom, yet we are never ill.

RunningLulu · 01/09/2016 22:55

Scum isn't the same as limescale surely? Scum is the filthy froth you get around the plughole after bathing equally filthy kids, while limescale is kind of inevitable in a hard water area. Or am I just a dirty bitch for leaving it?

cansu · 01/09/2016 22:56

It's just a choice. I can't be bothered to worry about it. I have other stuff to do, not necessarily exciting stuff but more important stuff. If I think it is getting too dirty I do it then. I certainly wouldn't be thinking I should do it every day or every other day or the sky will fall in. We have survived with our once a week bathroom clean quite well so I guess it isn't that risky or dangerous. I suppose if I had nothing much to do all day or had the money to pay someone I may choose to have it done more frequently but it really isn't a big deal.

MoosLikeJagger · 01/09/2016 22:56

10 minutes a day?! Every day!?

I can't be arsed to spend that wanking.

monkeygone · 01/09/2016 22:57

I think you're probably being a bit obsessive, OP. I don't know what this "scum" is that you're referring to, but after a day of my family washing their hands, the sink doesn't look any different to the day before really. Same with the bath and toilet.

So we clean ours every week or two, I guess.

DontBuyANewMumCashmere · 01/09/2016 22:58

I only have DH and me to worry about while DD is still in nappies.

DH is fully toilet trained and whilst he often leaves the seat up - couldn't care less, he needs it up, I need it down, we just switch it round - there is never piss on the rim/seat or the floor.
The sink might have a splodge of toothpaste but we swish it away.
The bath might have a hair or two after a shower but it's down the plughole before you can spell your name out in pubes DH once did it for a joke boak

He cleans all the toilets and bathrooms once a week. We have a toilet mat IKR? and a bath mat which get washed weekly. As long as we don't plan to eat off the toilet seat I don't understand what could go wrong?

coffeetasteslikeshit · 01/09/2016 22:58

For the poster who washes her towels once every 6 weeks.
How often to wash towels and why

The comments section was spot on! What a ridiculous article.

donajimena · 01/09/2016 23:00

I'm an absolute slattern in regards to cleaning... so I don't make mess. At all. If the loo gets a mark after use it gets a slug of bleach. When I brush my teeth I rinse close to the plug hole and swish it down.. etc etc.. I clean as i go!

Spectre8 · 01/09/2016 23:02

Stick a bleach bloo block in the toilet cistern - cleans toilet pan every flush. If shower over bath means the tub might get a bit scummy towards end of week then I clean it whilst I am showering and have left conditioner in hair those 3 mins means I can quickly wipe around the tub. Then on weekend when there is time I do a proper clean.

mumofhandsomeboys · 01/09/2016 23:04

Ours gets done once a month... In a good month! And then it's only one of the two bathrooms! There's me, DH, 3yo and 6mo. I'd say our bathroom gets more dusty than dirty but a quick spray with the shower / rinse with tap and the dirt is gone Grin downstairs loo gets cleaned every week / fortnight but that only coz visitors see that loo! Haha

Thingmcthingyface · 01/09/2016 23:06

Op asks question. Gets tons of clear sensible responses... Op only responds to AIBUish posts and keeps saying they want answers. Can't be arsed to rtft posters keep adding identical responses to op.... Op starts fight and goes to bed.... Rinse....repeat....Grin

More srysly tho OP what happens if you lived a little and did it every other day?
And to the daily cleaners fine if you are the lemon/vinegar/bicarbonate brigade (sound science, alkali to shift acid scum and vice versa) but if it's cillit bang and wipes with 'dangerous to aquatic life' you will not die of Loo scum but the chemicals that flood down your bog are problematic and it would be super nice for all the lil DC's that will inherit this earth if you chilled out a little and let your scum build up...or used the heavy stuff once a week max. Unless you eat off your Loo you don't need anti bacterial every day.

paxillin · 01/09/2016 23:06

How the hell do people do it? Well, cleaner comes weekly. Day 1-3 bathrooms are still really clean, day 4 not so great, day 5 I think hmm, could be better, but then she comes day after tomorrow, so I leave it.

cardibach · 01/09/2016 23:09

Notso you wipe toilets once or twice a day ??? WTAF? Why on earth do you do that?
Honestly, some people on MN are either lying or worryingly obsessed with cleanliness.

JeffVaderneedsatray · 01/09/2016 23:10

In an ideal world I deep clean my bathroom once a week with the odd wipe as needed.
However I frequently admit I am a slattern.
I do whaty my mum did when I was growing up. She worked full time and bathroom cleaning happened on a Saturday morning. When I was old enough it was my job.
If i cared more about housework I would still only do it once a week. Meh.

LuckyBuddha · 01/09/2016 23:12

There is more to life than cleaning... A tidy home is a neglected child... That's my motto!

LittleBearPad · 01/09/2016 23:13

'Ciao'. Really?

Just try not to clean your bathroom tomorrow and see if you all drown in filth.

you won't

MrsJayy · 01/09/2016 23:22
