How the hell do people clean bathroom only once a week?!

Pinkbabe1 · 01/09/2016 21:05

I'm genuinely interested here because I've read many a MN thread of ways in which to save time at home and almost always, people say clean the bathroom once a week! Now, I clean my bathroom everyday and even doing that the amount of scum I clean away each day surely would be unhygienic after a whole week? It leaves me baffled, I'm genuinely interested to know if the people that clean once a week have really dirty bathrooms by the end of it?! To put into perspective I thoroughly wipe the sink, toilet and bath surround - spray the bath and tiles and wash off before bleaching the toilet and wiping the floor which takes all of 10 mins. How do people get away with it?!

I just don't mind the bathroom being a bit marked. The tiles round the shower and the top of the bath gets wiped down with a chamois each time we have a shower to stop the grout going yak. That's just part of the shower routine. The sink and bidet get a wipe down during the week if need be but don't get that muddy even with my allotment and lots of sporting hobbies. I can live with a bit of a ring round the bath during the week, if it gets bad a wipe with a flannel sorts it but is rarely needed.
Clean just doesn't mean spotless.

RiverTam · 01/09/2016 22:34

I genuinely don't understand how your bathroom can get so scummy, unless you all manage to get really grubby every single day. And I'm not being rude, I just don't get how a bathroom can be that scummy.

For me it's not the 10 minutes, it's the cleaning chemicals and simply - my bathroom just doesn't need it.

Spottypjs1 · 01/09/2016 22:34

Agree with other posters. There are 2 adults and 2 children in this house and it just doesn't get that scummy. I have very little clutter in the bathroom; that helps and if there is toothpaste residue/water/dust whatever, I do a quick wipe with a wet wipe. Then once a week, I will do a proper clean.

HeddaLettuce · 01/09/2016 22:35

Yes I'm filthy - I shower every day so I must be dirtier than most people

Most of us shower ever day, where is all the "scum" coming from though?

Pinkbabe1 · 01/09/2016 22:35

No I can't Cardibach - I clearly said MY bathroom would be disgusting after a week.

Sometimes my bathroom only gets cleaned every other week if we're busy. I often forget about it until I realise it's really manky and clean it or order someone else to. I only vaccuum once a week and dust once in a blue moon.

PollyPerky · 01/09/2016 22:35

Do posters who suggest those of us who clean more often are unemployed or have no life. Snipy , patronising comments!

It's quite possible to work, have hobbies, and a life and spend 5-10 minutes in 24 hours cleaning a bathroom ( or two) as well.

There is nothing superior about saying you prefer a dirty bathroom and looking down on people who like their houses cleaner.

JellyWitch · 01/09/2016 22:36

I do the loo more than once a week but that's because I have a 6 year old boy. The bathroom gets a wipe once a week and a proper scrub when it starts to bother me.

I work full time, can't afford a cleaner, have two kids, a cat and consuming hobbies: something has to give!

sentia · 01/09/2016 22:36

I don't think there is a "right" level of house cleanliness that's universally accepted. It's more of a spectrum.

LaurieMarlow · 01/09/2016 22:36

I don't always manage once a week. Blush.

If other people want to be slaves to cleanliness, good luck to them. I have much better things to do.

Pinkbabe1 · 01/09/2016 22:37

I'm off to bed because I'm quite frankly sick of repeating myself! Ciao bangs head against the wall and reminds myself never to post in AIBU again as most people are flamed to the ground

pinkbabe- what does it get dirty with? You mentioned scum, a quick wipe around and a quick spray takes seconds, ditto with toothpaste in the sink, or poop in the pan.

What is causing all the dirt that you have to clean it so much? Are you living with a family of muddy rugby players?

RunningLulu · 01/09/2016 22:38

I was taught by mum to do a few things after my morning shower: Hair out the plughole, quick rinse with shower, wipe around the toilet seat, and quick rinse around sink after washing hands, and whichever adult uses loo last bleaches it. It means sometimes I can go 2-3 weeks without a deeper clean.

PollyPerky · 01/09/2016 22:39

River we live in a very hard water area.

You are very welcome to come and run your lovely soft hands around my bath(s) after people have used them for a bath, shower or hairwash and feel the scum.

In my house I have a cupboard in the bathroom with rubber gloves, a cloth and cleaning materials ( Something like Method or Eco products are not bad for the ecology) , so a quick clean round the bath and basin while I am cleaning my teeth takes 5 mins. I can even do it with one hand while cleaning my teeth with the other if pushed.

PollyPerky · 01/09/2016 22:39

I think many people here are confusing soap scum with dirt.

They are different.

Myusernameismyusername · 01/09/2016 22:41

Mainly people shaving bits of themselves in my house, long hair and excessive shampoo usage by children. Also pets don't help. Cat likes to climb all over sink and in bath. I still don't clean it every day exactly just whenever I think it might need cleaning.
The thing with hard water is that it does look awful very quickly. My metal kitchen sink always looks awful

SpookyPotato · 01/09/2016 22:41

I think it's just about different standards and also not seeing any scum, I genuinely don't see much muck from me, DP and toddler. Toilet takes ages to start looking dirty, same with bath, sink- I just wipe toothpaste etc off with my hand. Maybe your bathroom attracts more dust or something? Maybe you'd come to my bathroom think it's filthy! I just don't worry too much and as long as it's decent then it's fine. But nothing wrong with wanting it gleaming either. It's up to ourselves what we spend our time on.

metimeisforwimps · 01/09/2016 22:42

I clean mine once a week. By the end of the week it needs a clean but it's not disgusting. Don't get much scum, a little around the taps. Mostly it's just a bit of dust that gathers, water marks etc. Everyone cleans up as they go along with the toilet, so any wee plashes or skid marks get removed immediately.
If we have guests coming I give it a quick extra, plus I change the bathmat during the week. Ideally it would get done twice a week, but once a week is OK, and really it does look pretty clean!
Using bleach as a regular part of a cleaning routine is really awful for the environment.

metimeisforwimps · 01/09/2016 22:42

We are 2 adults, a 5 year old boy and a baby.

user1471552005 · 01/09/2016 22:42

I probably do a little bit of cleaning every time I visit the bathroom. Even without thinking. If I see shaving hair in the sink I swish it down as I brush my teeth, wipe up a bit of shampoo, wipe pee off the seat with a wipe, pick up empty cardboard or grab a bag out of the bin, spray around the bath, just stuff I do on passing without giving it much thought. Takes less than 2 minutes a day.

RiverTam · 01/09/2016 22:42

I'm in a very hard water area too.

Nedisabloodydonkey · 01/09/2016 22:43

This is a strange post. We obviously only clean our bathrooms once a week or less by going "nope, not doing it today"

Surely what you mean is "why are you disgusting, filthy slatterns? I, however, am fabulous!"

RainyDayBear · 01/09/2016 22:43

Life's far too short to clean a bathroom more than once a week. I usually give the sink a wipe midweek, but the rest doesn't seem to need it! Either that or my bathroom is disgracefully shameful and no one has yet broken it to me...

SleepFreeZone · 01/09/2016 22:46

Once a week here and it's fine Confused

MaddyHatter · 01/09/2016 22:47

my DH is a welder, he's surrounded by oil, metal, dust and dirt.. he comes home abolutely filthy, stinking a sweaty, especially if he's been pouring and grinding aluminium from molten to on the safes he builds.

As long as we rinse the shower down after he's done, there's still no need to scrub/bleach it!

i can't imagine you're getting any where near a filthy as he does!
