How the hell do people clean bathroom only once a week?!

Pinkbabe1 · 01/09/2016 21:05

I'm genuinely interested here because I've read many a MN thread of ways in which to save time at home and almost always, people say clean the bathroom once a week! Now, I clean my bathroom everyday and even doing that the amount of scum I clean away each day surely would be unhygienic after a whole week? It leaves me baffled, I'm genuinely interested to know if the people that clean once a week have really dirty bathrooms by the end of it?! To put into perspective I thoroughly wipe the sink, toilet and bath surround - spray the bath and tiles and wash off before bleaching the toilet and wiping the floor which takes all of 10 mins. How do people get away with it?!

I only use bleach for the loo roughly twice a week i guess.

HeCantBeSerious · 04/09/2016 00:06

I put my bum on it, do what's necessary, drop lid, flush, wash hands. Contact with my backside is pretty limited as a rule. So I'm wondering where and how all these germs are going to get me. They're not on my toothbrush and I can't lick my own bum.

celeste83 · 04/09/2016 00:08

Obsessive bleacher? lol ok. All toilet waste goes to the sewer anyway where it gets treated with chlorine though.

SpaceUnicorn · 04/09/2016 00:13

How much does it really matter if a few germs are lurking beneath the waterline between scrubs? They are not going to jump out of the water and attack your arse or anything

Grin

I'm pretty sure that no one ever fell dangerously ill from a toilet that hadn't been bleached within the last 48 hours, as long as it was used in a normal manner (i.e. no licking the rim, etc).

celeste83 · 04/09/2016 00:21

Why am i being made to feel bad for wanting a clean toilet for my family to use?

HeCantBeSerious · 04/09/2016 00:27

Because your definition of clean is off kilter!

celeste83 · 04/09/2016 00:31

But as i said chlorine is used in the sewerage process. Why? Because of harmfull germs that need to be rid of. Why is generally acceptable to kill germs in the sewer but not for me to do so in my loo?

HeCantBeSerious · 04/09/2016 00:36

Different animals, dear. Effluence from tens/hundreds of thousands of people isn't really the same as a few people in a household. Levels are monitored constantly and with extreme accuracy. They don't just squirt indiscriminate amounts around every couple of days.

(Best friend works in this area.)

Honestly, it's safe for you to ditch the bleach.

HeCantBeSerious · 04/09/2016 00:37

Individually we actually need to live with many of the germs you're killing off. Not to mention the effect of bleach on lung lining.

celeste83 · 04/09/2016 00:38

So you want me to never clean my loo ever again? Confused

HeCantBeSerious · 04/09/2016 00:40

Of course not. But you don't need bleach and you don't need to do it every other day!

celeste83 · 04/09/2016 00:41

Why are you trying to protect these germs?

electricflyzapper · 04/09/2016 01:04

People clean their bathrooms every week? Shock Once a fortnight here, if I'm feeling energetic, often a lot longer. And no maintenance wipes in between either. I can't believe anyone cleans anywhere daily.

HeCantBeSerious · 04/09/2016 01:10

why are you trying to protect these germs?

Most germs aren't harmful. Some germs are helpful. Bleach doesn't discriminate (much like antibiotics). Killing all germs is bad for us individually, for our immune systems and extremely bad for the environment.

But you'd know some of that if you'd read the link I posted for you. Wink

celeste83 · 04/09/2016 01:15

Yay the germ lover is back Grin Do you cry at the thought of millions of germs melting in bleach?

HeCantBeSerious · 04/09/2016 01:25

No. Just the utter stupidity and selfishness of the general public

HeCantBeSerious · 04/09/2016 01:30

Ahem.

Can you not concentrate your efforts to saving the rhinos, elephants and whales rather than the germs hiding under the rim of my loo?

kittyjewel · 04/09/2016 01:31

This thread is hilarious! But I will join in I suppose. It's once a week for me too! Don't mind it getting a little dirty nearer the end of the week, can I even call it dirty? I give it a good scrub once a week n love how clean it is and stays for a few days after, but the fact of matter is; I can not be fuckin arsed to do that every single day!

HeCantBeSerious · 04/09/2016 01:34

Can you not concentrate your efforts to saving the rhinos, elephants and whales rather than the germs hiding under the rim of my loo?

Your life seems unnecessarily focussed on cleaning. Can't you think of anything more fun to spend your time on?

celeste83 · 04/09/2016 01:35

I think you and my dh would get on well haha

MargaretRiver · 04/09/2016 02:09

There are micro organisms in every niche on the planet
In the hottest volcanoes, frozen glaciers, life has evolved to survive in the most extreme environments
Overuse of antibacterials & bleach just creates an environment for antibacterial-resistant / bleach resistant microbes to flourish
And we do not know which ones will flourish and what harmful effects they might have in the future
In the same way that antibiotic overuse has led to multi-resistant superbugs

As well as the damage to aquatic life that we do know about, obviously

GreatFuckability · 04/09/2016 02:18

I can't even remember the last time i cleaned my loo, perhaps last week, the week before.
I generally clean my sink when the taps are more white with toothpaste stains that tap coloured and/or someone is coming round who might need to piss.
The bath I clean out more often cos I moult like a dog in spring, so i need to sweep up the hair and make a wig.
The shower never gets used, and the razor i dropped in there in April is still on the floor of it, so thats how long ago that got cleaned.
We are all still alive and breathing and never ill in this house.

MaryField · 04/09/2016 03:55

Did I just read that someone hoovers their lounge up to 3 times a day? ShockShock I can't find the post, hopefully I'm hallucinating because it's the middle of the night ShockShock

Regarding cleaning products, I agree that they are overused. People who are obsessed with cleaning need to look for more eco alternatives or cut down on this unnecessary activity.
