How the hell do people clean bathroom only once a week?!

Pinkbabe1 · 01/09/2016 21:05

I'm genuinely interested here because I've read many a MN thread of ways in which to save time at home and almost always, people say clean the bathroom once a week! Now, I clean my bathroom everyday and even doing that the amount of scum I clean away each day surely would be unhygienic after a whole week? It leaves me baffled, I'm genuinely interested to know if the people that clean once a week have really dirty bathrooms by the end of it?! To put into perspective I thoroughly wipe the sink, toilet and bath surround - spray the bath and tiles and wash off before bleaching the toilet and wiping the floor which takes all of 10 mins. How do people get away with it?!

I don't think my OH has ever cleaned the bathroom.

miwelaisjacydo · 02/09/2016 08:11

Clean mine once a week unless it's horrid then do it again. Also put bleach down loo daily.

bigbuttons · 02/09/2016 08:12

Bloody hell, most of you have serious ocd.

sentia · 02/09/2016 08:16

If you clean every day, are you choosing something non-toxic to do it with, and not something toxic to aquatic life? --> nasties

Oblomov16 · 02/09/2016 08:17

You clean yours every day? Why?

shovetheholly · 02/09/2016 08:18

sentia - I use a microfibre cloth and water on most surfaces, and distilled vinegar if something needs shifting in the bath. For floor - Method yellow bottle.

Mine really DOES need doing every day. As I said before, it's the poor air quality where I live. Sad

sentia · 02/09/2016 08:26

Shove, yes that's what we use too Smile
(Although happily ours doesn't need doing daily, or if it does I'm oblivious)

goose1964 · 02/09/2016 08:31

once a week? I clean the sink & bath about once a fortnight when it's obvious no-one else is going to do it ( OK the loo gets done at least every other day) but no-one in my household is sick very often - unlike some families of clean freaks I know

celeste83 · 02/09/2016 08:34

I would definitely argue that its grim not to clean the loo at least once a week.

Peonie7654 · 02/09/2016 08:40

I think that people mean a deep clean.
I whip round daily. That's just sink wipe down and a quick loo roll wipe down of the loo.
I might get a cleaning wipe out if it's dirty.

When I lived on my own and didn't spit toothpaste everywhere (dd) pee on the floor (DS) or shave (DH) my bathroom was always sparkling with minimal effort or cleaning. I even had white carpet. (Developers choice)

Maryann1975 · 02/09/2016 08:43

DH cleans the bathroom every Friday (I sometimes do it if I'm feeling nice). If the toilet or sink looks a bit grubby half way through the week, I will give them a quick wipe round, but generally by Wednesday if the sink is looking a bit grubby I shrug and think that it is nearly Friday so it will be fine. It's generally solved by a splash of water though, it will only be toothpaste, there are far more other things that need my attention.

queenofthemountains · 02/09/2016 08:44

To be fair my mum taught me that virtually anything is more fulfilling than cleaning.

Her main piece of advice when I had a baby was that when you go back to work employ a cleaner.

I clean the bathroom when it looks dirty, or if guests are coming.

Fluffy40 · 02/09/2016 08:44

If I don't put my specs on it looks just fine !

Comingfoccacia · 02/09/2016 08:57

My bathroom can go 2 weeks without a proper clean. It doesn't get that bad, if it got unhygenically dirty then I would sort it. I think that's the difference, I don't need my bathroom to be sparkling but I wouldn't want it unhygenic. Therefore it doesn't warrant a daily clean.
PS warm vinegar and washing up liquid is a great bath cleaner

NattyGolfJerkin · 02/09/2016 09:04

We have more bathrooms than people and so they don't need cleaning as often as the single bathroom being used by a family of 7.

Goldenhandshake · 02/09/2016 09:15

Mine gets a thorough clean once a week, flash bathroom cleaner and well scrubbed sink, tiles, bath and loo, floor cleaned. During the week, I am out of my house 7.15am until at least 7pm. I do not have time to do a full clean of every room every day, I'd never sleep. Bleach down the loo 3ish times during the week, we use a shower spray after it's been used to stop smears, sink gets rinsed as DD inevitably gets toothpaste froth everywhere.

MinonsMovie · 02/09/2016 09:28

Why? Seriously, why? I clean for asthetics more than any other reason. When I can be bothered. We don't get sick often, so it's not a hygiene issue surely, in our case at least.

You've been sold a lie by the cleaning product companies, then fed another more lemony and vinegary lie by cleaning programmes.

Programmes.
About cleaning.

Hmm
KatharinaRosalie · 02/09/2016 09:46

Cleaner does it once per week. I might wipe around the sink if kids have been splashing, but it does not need more cleaning - I can upload a pic just befure the cleaning day if someone wants to know what it looks like. We are not dirty, quite the opposite - I've had guests asking how we manage to keep the house so clean and tidy.

But maybe that's the trick, we don't get it messy - shower and sink is rinsed after they have been used, so there's no toothpaste or soap left. Nobody pisses on the floor. We do have a toilet brush which is used when needed. There really isn't that much scum and filth spread daily.

YelloDraw · 02/09/2016 09:50

I whip round daily. That's just sink wipe down and a quick loo roll wipe down of the loo.

But WHY does the loo need a wipe by you? If anyone makes the loo more dirty than the flush can handle, they shoudl clean it themselves there and then, not leave it for you to do some hours later.

JackShit · 02/09/2016 09:56

Some of us, y'know...work Hmm

woodhill · 02/09/2016 09:57

Sorry Polly it's about choices. Mumsnet is relaxing, cleaning every 5 minutes is tedious and unfulfilling. The bathrooms are fine but iyho they are dirty so it's subjective. Plus I'm sick and tired of cleaning up after my ds and dh tbh who are bone idle most of the time.

I agree about the harm to the environment issues.

Makinglists · 02/09/2016 10:00

We only do ours once a week - why would it need doing more...??
We rinse shower/bath after each use. Odd swipe of the sink if particularly toothpasty. If loo looks grim then of course I'll give it a mid-week clean, but only one proper clean once a week..

BastardGoDarkly · 02/09/2016 10:32

Mooslikejagger Grin

Op, I think people deep clean once a week, most, not all, give the necessary wipe around the sink/toilet/bath as they go. It's not every day 10 minute scrub, or not touching it for a week.

But yes, you're being pretty arsey to some posters, are you new?

Peonie7654 · 02/09/2016 10:46

Yellow draw

I'm a SAHP with school age children.....it's sort of my job to cleAn.
Plus I have a 5year old who thinks he has peed in the loo.

isittimeforcoffee · 02/09/2016 10:47

We have three boys under the age of 7 so it gets grim quickly. I pour a bit of bleach down the loo every night before bed, and give the sink and loo a quick wipe round with the anti bac wipes that I keep in the bathroom whenever I spot that it needs it. I don't actually have to properly clean the bathroom then - a quick 2 minute wipe round when I spot it needs doing keeps it clean.
