Don't know if you remember my thread awhile ago about a certain chocolate retailer leaving me out in the street in my wheelchair, because they had no disabled access? Well they promised a bell as they refused to put any ramp in. Went there today and guess what? No fucking bell. I'm suppose I should have expected it, but I had hoped the bell could have been sorted by now. I mean how long does it take to put a bell up?

LurkingHusband · 31/08/2016 14:52

I wonder if there is a local artisan chocolate supplier to Mummyme1987 who could make a chocolate ramp.

The obvious (?) point being that it's as useful as anything Thorntons have done so far.

But don't bother your local paper with any details - they hate stories like this.

TikTakTok · 31/08/2016 15:07

Please, please don't flame me but have they not put in a bell because you could just knock on the window or just call out from the door. Confused it's only a small store so surely you could easily get their attention? is there a reason knocking on the window or calling to a member of staff is not possible?

I presume I'm missing something....

TikTakTok · 31/08/2016 15:09

I haven't read the other thread so I was basing my comment on this one. I really am just asking.

Mummyme1987 · 31/08/2016 15:14

I don't have the strength to knock loudly

OP posts:
Mummyme1987 · 31/08/2016 15:15

And they might not hear it in a busy shop. A bell is louder.

OP posts:
Mummyme1987 · 31/08/2016 15:16

Others may be also unable too

OP posts:
Mummyme1987 · 31/08/2016 15:18

I couldn't get near the door the first time I went as it was heaving.

No flaming but

What you are missing is that the general idea is the business makes reasonable adjustments for the customer. Not the other way round. Much as Thorntons might like it that way.

Just out of interest has anyone messaged Thorntons on Facebook. I notice they reply in about an hour, although I suspect anyone enquiring about this won't get a reply at all.

I wish we used Thorntons now, so I could boycott them.

Mummyme1987 · 31/08/2016 15:22

And I really shouldn't have to. I should be as able as anyone else to be able to access the shop.

Mummyme1987 · 31/08/2016 15:30

Chocolate ramp! 😂😂😂😂😂

OP posts:
swampytiggaa · 31/08/2016 15:36

I work in a shop that has about 4 steps down to get in. No way of fitting a ramp. A lot of our customers come to the top of the stairs and we then go and get them whatever they want usually a selection of items for them to choose.

We also have customers who aren't able to leave their mobility scooters. They usually bip their horn and one of us pops out and deals with them.

We are a very popular store due to our excellent customer service. We often carry items to cars or to the local taxi rank or bus stop. We phone for taxi's then walk doddery customers down. We also take phone orders and deliver to people unable to come in.

If our small family run Hardware store can manage to work round an awkward layout I can't see why Thorntons can't.

Mummyme1987 · 31/08/2016 15:38

It's about willingness to help. Or not in Thorntons case.

OP posts:
Stormtreader · 31/08/2016 15:38

The big bell is probably too heavy for you to carry with you as a temporary measure. Airhorns on the other hand...

TikTakTok · 31/08/2016 15:44

Thank you answering my question and not flaming me Blush I can see that some people couldn't knock or call for attention and that a bell would be better.

I couldn't get near the door the first time I went as it was heaving

I guess in that situation you would be excluded even if they had a bell as you wouldn't be able to get to it. Sad

Bahhhhhumbug · 31/08/2016 15:46

My dad used to say 'About as much use as a chocolate fireguard' Grin
A chocolate ramp could be the modern day equivalent.

Mummyme1987 · 31/08/2016 15:49

But even if it's heaving a bell attracting the shop person who would come to me would work.

OP posts:
Flatbox · 31/08/2016 15:54

TikTakToe would you really want to have to hammer on the window or yell out loud to attract attention every time you went shopping? It would be humiliating and embarrassing to say the least, imagine doing that and still be ignored, no one would want to do that. It's not reasonable to expect any customer to do it. There should be full access for all customers but a bell is a short term fix hopefully until Thorntons are shamed enough to do what is expected of them.

TikTakTok · 31/08/2016 15:56

Flatbox. My question has already been answered and I have said that I understand why a bell would be better than knocking or calling.

LurkingHusband · 31/08/2016 15:57

In the spirit of "if the mountain will not come ..." is it possible to ring the shop when you are outside ? (Or 5 minutes away ?) and request assistance ?

alternatively, I see the following domains

who.is/whois/thorntonsaccessibility.com

who.is/whois/thorntonsarecrap.com

who.is/whois/thorntonsdoorbell.com

are up for purchase.

TikTakTok · 31/08/2016 15:58

But even if it's heaving a bell attracting the shop person who would come to me would work.

You misunderstood. I meant that if you couldnt reach the door then you wouldn't have been able to reach a bell either as you would presume the bell would be next to the door.

Mummyme1987 · 31/08/2016 17:59

Really the only satisfactory solution is a ramp all others are crap

I tried to message Thorntons on FB yesterday, to let them know how shit they are being.

Despite Facebook knowing that they are replying to queries in an hour, nada. Not a peep. Fuck all, in fact.

If the Daily Mail is trawling for stories, they are welcome to pick my contributions to this thread.

OP: can we work Brexit, immigration, house prices, or a fruity pic of a teenage girl into this story ? It's the call to prayer for Daily Mail readers.
