Don't know if you remember my thread awhile ago about a certain chocolate retailer leaving me out in the street in my wheelchair, because they had no disabled access? Well they promised a bell as they refused to put any ramp in. Went there today and guess what? No fucking bell. I'm suppose I should have expected it, but I had hoped the bell could have been sorted by now. I mean how long does it take to put a bell up?

This could be an expensive link! 😂

Thortons may not care - but if locally they are seen as not delivering on promises to assess or make ease of access, in a city like Norwich it'll soon get round Grin

Have you tried Twitter or Facebook-ing their main page?

SnugglySnerd · 30/08/2016 19:08

I remember your first thread. That step is tiny, I can't see why it would be difficult for them to put a ramp in, it wouldn't have to be a very long ramp!
Sorry you have had such bad service. I agree about writing to your mp.

Mummyme1987 · 30/08/2016 19:12

My mp isn't the Norwich one though.

It was all over fb and Twitter, retweeted many times thanks to you lot but still nothing.

Thanks for your patience whilst I’ve been investigating your concern.
At Thorntons we are committed to providing ease of access for all our customers. Unfortunately a small number of stores have features that make this difficult to achieve. In these instances, our staff are there to help any customer who may require assistance. We apologise that this was not the case on this occasion and that you were made to feel uncomfortable. Please be assured that we will make every effort that this does not happen again. Our Norwich store’s size, position and structural characteristics unfortunately do not allow us to make any useful modifications to improve access. However, we are phasing out with restricted access when the leases come up for renewal. In the meantime we will ensure these stores are fitted with a bell with which to call for assistance. In the meantime if I can be of further assistance , please don’t hesitate to contact me on 01773526165.
Best Wishes
Angela

Maybe Angela needs a few mumsnetters to call her and ask!

I also remember your thread and think it's awful that you cannot access the shop. I can't see where they could even put a bell if the shop is completely glass fronted.

Mummyme1987 · 30/08/2016 19:26

There's wood around that good be drilled into

NationalExpress · 30/08/2016 19:26

A portable ramp shouldn't be any problem at all in that doorway, and tbh I'm amazed they don't have to have wheelchair access.

Coffeethrowtrampbitch · 30/08/2016 19:27

I can't believe they only promised the most lazy, cheap option and then didn't even bother to do that.

I suggest you attract the attention of the staff by hefting a half brick through the window in future, they've hardly left you any other options.

Horsegirl1 · 30/08/2016 19:28

Erm what will a bell do ??Confused

wombattoo · 30/08/2016 19:30

The bell would be rung so staff could serve at the door.
I couldn't see the wood Mummy - sorry

hawaiibaby · 30/08/2016 19:32

Just to say, asda do personalised cakes - you can even put a wedding photo on one! Seeing as they were nice in there too. Sorry thorntons have been so shit but hope you have a great anniversary op Wine

ILostItInTheEarlyNineties · 30/08/2016 19:33

I think you should purchase a huge town crier bell and ring it loudly outside the store to make a point. Grin
It seems like you were fed a pack of lies.

youarenotkiddingme · 30/08/2016 19:33

Yes a bell isn't as ideal as a ramp but it would have been a reasonable adjustment.

Just so you know OP you can ask for free delivery instead under reasonable adjustments

I'm pretty sure Hotel Chocolat in Chapelfield do personalised chocolate, and will be totally accessible via lifts etc Smile

Mummyme1987 · 30/08/2016 19:35

Thanks but I'm not putting a penny into their pocket now. Bastards.

OP posts:
Mummyme1987 · 30/08/2016 19:36

Do they? Such a good access to their shop.

OP posts:
queenofthepirates · 30/08/2016 19:42

I just don't get this-I run a shop (in Ipswich incidentally so not far away!) and I actively welcome people in wheelchairs. I am a bit limited by space but I make sure that accessibility is possible and people are not made to feel uncomfortable. I run deliveries to people's homes if they can't make it in and I have photographs available of any inaccessible products to show anyone who can't climb the stairs.
Why? Because it's the right thing to do and secondly, people talk. If they get good service from me, they will tell their friends.

Lorelei76 · 30/08/2016 19:48

OP that's pathetic of them
Local paper?
Places that do nothing about this give me the rage.

Whatthefreakinwhatnow · 30/08/2016 20:08

I'm pretty sure they do, check their website or give them a call
