to want to spend £2k on a bed for guest room?

Just that really. I wanted to take advantage of the 30% M&S home event and get a new bed for the guest room we recently decorated. Cost includes Super King divan base, headboard and mattress.

Asked DH his opinion and he says that it's much too expensive for a guest bed and what's wrong with the (crappy Ikea) bed we already have (that creaks horribly when anyone moves on it!). We were planning on getting nice new wardrobes so I think the bed we have will look even more crap with those!

For info, DH has a very good job so we can easily afford it (I'm a SAHM with 2 Primary age kids). I think he's a bit out of touch with how much nice beds cost, or AIBU?

£2k on a guest bed is insane. Yes on your own bed but not for something that will be slept on maybe a dozen times a year. £500 tops.

OpenMe · 30/08/2016 16:27

A truly nasty bed in a guest room is horrible but you don't need to spend £2000 to get one that would be perfectly Ok imo. How often do you have guests?

ABloodyDifficultWoman · 30/08/2016 16:28

Stealth boast?

Eatthecake · 30/08/2016 16:28

I'm swaying to agree with your DH

How often do you have guests stay? Do your guests stay for a fair amount of time (2-3 nights) ?

I could afford 2k on guest beds but would I spent it, no I wouldn't because I'd rather spend it on something that is used all the time that my little family could enjoy

You don't have to get the bed from IKEA but there isn't any need to spend 2k either, there are good beds in between that price

SoupSpork · 30/08/2016 16:32

My own bed is a cheap one from IKEA and is fine, just tighten the screws if it squeaks. Envy at being able to spend that much on a guest bed though. But I agree with your husband to spend that much on a guest bed I'd want it to make itself in the morning!

OttilieKnackered · 30/08/2016 16:33

It's family money and yada yada but I wouldn't let you waste such a huge amount of my hard earned cash on a bloody guest bed.

Unless we're talking multi multi millionaire rich. In which case you'd probably have someone 'sourcing' it for you.

LunaLoveg00d · 30/08/2016 16:35

If you can easily afford it then go for it. It will last a lot longer than an Ikea one.

Personally, I'd recommend getting down to the local auction, picking up an antique frame for pennies, shelling out on a lovely mattress and possibly painting/restoring the frame.

takingthep · 30/08/2016 16:36

I would get this and save £1k - I think it is the same sort of quality as the M&S but cheaper.

I think £2k for a guest bed is a lot, but then it depends who you have to stay. Parents with bad backs that come and help you lots? Yeah I'd splash for a nice bed for them n

DollyBarton · 30/08/2016 16:39

You can get a really excellent guest bed for £1k. I'd be the same as your DH.

user1469976707 · 30/08/2016 16:39

Really wasn't meaning to stealth boast! Blush First ever post (long time lurker), please be kind!

Okay, so just me thinking that's reasonable for a nice big "forever" bed and mattress? Maybe I need to stop reading Homes and Gardens!!

We do have in laws staying a lot and family over at ours for Christmas, plus if one of us is sick/in late after a night out/likely to wake the other we use the guest room to sleep in.

We are trying to slowly replace all our well-used Ikea furniture with nicer stuff that will last, a bit at a time now that the boys don't draw all over everything (well, as much as they used to anyway).

Thanks Mumsnetters for the reality check :)

Don't forget to put a pea under the mattress

ItShouldHaveBeenJess · 30/08/2016 16:57

portiacastis The rate you get through beds, I'm not entirely sure you're qualified to comment.

BeingATwatItsABingThing · 30/08/2016 17:02

Portia, someone put a pea under my mattress once... Worst night's sleep I've ever had! 🏰

ItShouldHaveBeenJess · 30/08/2016 17:05

being. You are a bona fide princess!

BeingATwatItsABingThing · 30/08/2016 17:07

Jess, of course! Grin

magicboy79 · 30/08/2016 17:11

Spent 2.5k on our own bed, don't think I'd ever spend that on a guest bed that people don't regularly sleep in, waste of money. I'd rather spend it on something else for the house like painting/decorating, nice piece of art, something for kids

squoosh · 30/08/2016 17:11

If you can well afford it then there's no reason why not. Even if I was Miss Moneybags though for a guest bed though I'd be loathe to spend more than £1K.

Mausageandsash · 30/08/2016 17:13

Will you send a link to the bed? Smile nosy

squoosh · 30/08/2016 17:14

Warren Evans beds are really good quality.

Mrscog · 30/08/2016 17:14

I don't think I'd buy a super King as a guest bed, would a standard king size reduce the cost?

user1469976707 · 30/08/2016 17:18

This is a pic of the bed

Similar but cheaper here

user1469976707 · 30/08/2016 17:22

Wanted to go for Super King as some of the in laws are quite, ahem, large. And the room is 4m x 5m x3m high so thought a smaller bed might look a bit lost?

Will see if I can find a cheaper similar one.

How much for bed and how much for £50 notes to spread around on the top for rolling on? Wink

I'd buy a new mattress and leave the bed. I can think of better things to spend £2k on. Like a holiday.
