To be really annoyed at this reaction to birthday cake?

Ok - so it was my DC's birthday the other week and due to allergies, I always have to make birthday cakes.

Every year I've pushed myself and got a little bit more adventurous. Started with badly burnt, sloppily iced crappy cake on year one and a few years later I've managed to do pretty well.

This year I decided to try stacking cakes and made a really cool cake that looked great. It wasn't the most professionally-finished thing, but it was pretty good. All the family were really impressed and, yes, it made me feel good as I'd really gone out of my comfort zone.

But one parent of a friend of his actually commented to one of my best friends during his party that it was unnecessarily large and I was just showing off. This is a woman who always pays a local cake maker a small fortune to make really elaborate cakes.

AIBU to feel very annoyed/upset? I just wanted my child to have an amazing cake, just like the ones cake makers can make but without the hefty price tag.

I'd be wondering why your best friend passed this on? It was never going to make you happy, what was she hoping to gain? Yes, it was an unpleasant (jealous) comment, but I don't imagine it was intended for your ears.

Yeah, agree that the friend is a dick for passing this on. I might raise an eyebrow too if someone had made a towering creation for a party of 5 seven-year-olds, but I wouldn't say it to the hostess!

It's best to laugh at people like that - perhaps that's how your friend thought you would react?

Good point about my friend passing it on - I think she was genuinely really upset on my behalf that someone was being nasty. I hope so, anyway.
It was a two layer cake but was pretty big as it was a large party. You know, one of those 'crap, we need to invite the whole class' parties that you get when they're younger. So I made it big to ensure they all got a piece. I actually only just made about enough!
Yeah - think I'll go four tiers with the whole bloody works next time. I was so pissed off.

I don't know it depends how it was said - was it "ffs who does she think she is with her big cake?" or was it more of a "Christ look at the size of that - puts us all to shame" type of remark. I've commented "show off" when my friend has brought out a birthday cake but thats just how we talk to each other.

Your helpful friend who repeated the comment back to you may have misinterpreted it.

The lovely lady paid someone over £100 recently for a pink princess castle cake. £100!!! Ridiculous!!!

I think it sounds like she was feeling jealous and inadequate because you made a fab cake and she doesn't. I make cakes for our kids, because I enjoy it and because it's something I enjoy being able to do for them.

I understand how you feel as my little boy has food intolerances and its so important to me to find awesome alternatives for him and I'm always so pleased when I cook/bake him something new and it turns out well. He has recently had a birthday and this was the first year he's had a great cake. It meant the world to me and him. Don't let this silly woman upset you. It obviously nothing to do with the cake and all to do with her bad attitude and miserable life.

Aaaaand she now goes to the back of the line for cake. Which there will sadly be not-quite-enough of because you don't want to 'show off'

Absolutely just made it in order to see the reaction on my son's face. He's made comments at other parties about why his cakes aren't like the ones there and I've had to tell him for years that Mummy couldn't make ones that good.
So his reaction was so fantastic! I've watched the video several times now as its just magical.
