To be really annoyed at this reaction to birthday cake?

Ok - so it was my DC's birthday the other week and due to allergies, I always have to make birthday cakes.

Every year I've pushed myself and got a little bit more adventurous. Started with badly burnt, sloppily iced crappy cake on year one and a few years later I've managed to do pretty well.

This year I decided to try stacking cakes and made a really cool cake that looked great. It wasn't the most professionally-finished thing, but it was pretty good. All the family were really impressed and, yes, it made me feel good as I'd really gone out of my comfort zone.

But one parent of a friend of his actually commented to one of my best friends during his party that it was unnecessarily large and I was just showing off. This is a woman who always pays a local cake maker a small fortune to make really elaborate cakes.

AIBU to feel very annoyed/upset? I just wanted my child to have an amazing cake, just like the ones cake makers can make but without the hefty price tag.

She's just jealous of your skills!

MinonsMovie · 26/08/2016 19:34

That's fast math op! Nice work. :)

I'd mark her card, but wouldn't get into the passive aggressive or one-up-man-ship stuff. If you really don't know her, then you might become good friends in the future.

All of us say stupid stuff for stupid reasons at times.

Or she might just be an out and out poisonous cow ... but that will become apparent as time goes on.

Good on you OP! I see it a lot on the cake decorating sites I'm on, people asking people for e.g 3 tier sponges with lots hand made decorations and saying there budget is e.g £30. That's why I could never do it as a business, I would under charge all the time!

swelchphr · 27/08/2016 13:32

I'd take it as a compliment and that she thought it was so grand (and similar to me, doesn't have the ability to do it on her own which is why she pays a small fortune for her cakes).

WhatamessIgotinto · 27/08/2016 13:35

I wanna see the cake!!

Aeroflotgirl · 27/08/2016 13:41

She sounds jealous, and probably wishes she could make a lovely cake like yours.

Sorry that I can't share a photo - it'd give me away VERY quickly!
I honestly think that anyone can makes passable cake. I used to bake such awful ones - they were a running joke in my family. It's amazing what determination can achieve when you don't have much of an option. Allergies change everything...

I'm a psycho when it comes to birthday cakes....I go waaaay OTT and I don't give a fuck
I used to make cake professionally. Once a year (soon to be twice....having another kid) I go berserk and show right off. Fuck her the jealous bitch Grin

bibbetybobbetybooo · 04/09/2016 17:53

Ha ha! Just seen this last message. Made me feel much better! Well- I enjoyed making the cake and loved watching my little one's reaction so absolutely sod her! Found out on the first day back at school that she's been going on about 'the show-off cake' quite a fair bit. Stupid thing! Not inviting her next year!

MinonsMovie · 04/09/2016 19:25

Are you kidding me!? I just don't get people like this... I will absolutely defend her right to buy her professional cake and spend whatever she wants on it, but why is she saying things about your cake?
I mean I know it's jealousy. But it's just such textbook jealousy that surely even she knows she looks ridiculous going on and on about it! Blush

MinonsMovie · 04/09/2016 19:28

Maybe have a drop off party next year with a few true friends to help keep control of the kids? Don't leave her dc out just because she is a dick.
