To be really annoyed at this reaction to birthday cake?

Ok - so it was my DC's birthday the other week and due to allergies, I always have to make birthday cakes.

Every year I've pushed myself and got a little bit more adventurous. Started with badly burnt, sloppily iced crappy cake on year one and a few years later I've managed to do pretty well.

This year I decided to try stacking cakes and made a really cool cake that looked great. It wasn't the most professionally-finished thing, but it was pretty good. All the family were really impressed and, yes, it made me feel good as I'd really gone out of my comfort zone.

But one parent of a friend of his actually commented to one of my best friends during his party that it was unnecessarily large and I was just showing off. This is a woman who always pays a local cake maker a small fortune to make really elaborate cakes.

AIBU to feel very annoyed/upset? I just wanted my child to have an amazing cake, just like the ones cake makers can make but without the hefty price tag.

OP the only people who make comments like this are bitchy, bitter and unhappy. There's just no need to be nasty. Ignore! Bet your son loved it.

I'd definitely take it as a compliment on your cake!

bibbetybobbetybooo · 24/08/2016 15:54

Thank you everyone! I've run the gamut of reactions today ranging from 'fuck you, bitch' through wanting to shove cake in her face to finally settling on 'I don't actually care - my child loved it and that's all the matters'.
But I can't help it - I'm still pissed off!!
Agree that she's probably a bit bitter/jealous - though God know why. It's just a cake!!

wizzywig · 24/08/2016 15:58

That womans a jealous cow. Go enjoy your cake mountain

bibbetybobbetybooo · 24/08/2016 16:01

Cake mountain! Love it! In fact, why don't I bake a cakey Mount Everest next year? Preferably a fuck-off massive one that'll tower over the evil woman?

noblegiraffe · 24/08/2016 16:01

Well done on your cake! I make my kids cakes too because I remember my mum doing the same, even though I'm not creative or very good.
One turned out quite well and I was so proud and kept looking at a photo of it on my phone. I'd have been really annoyed if someone had said anything other than it was awesome, but luckily no one I know is that rude.

Cake disser is just a jealous cow.

whywonthedgehogssharethehedge · 24/08/2016 16:02

Sounds like she was jealous you did it yourself and didn't have to pay the hefty price tag. I would take it as a compliment!

ReallyExhaustedLlama · 24/08/2016 16:03

Agree with other posters - sounds like her inadequacies are spilling out as jealousy. If she is willing to pay for professional cakes being made she must see b'day cakes as something 'significant'. The comment says a lot more about her than you.You should be proud of what you have done - sounds like a lovely thing you made for your DC
(And no harm in showing of your baking skills a bit either!)

TheWitTank · 24/08/2016 16:03

Miserable bitch. Make a big fat gypsy wedding size one next year with lights and fountains etc. and revel in her bitterness.

MoreCoffeeNow · 24/08/2016 16:05

bibbetybobbetybooo are you the OP? If so name change fail.

qualitycontrolrequired started the thread.

bibbetybobbetybooo · 24/08/2016 16:06

Yes, I am the original poster. Changed my name yesterday so not too sure why the old name appeared at the start of the thread!

tinsheddy · 24/08/2016 16:07

Some of the responses on this thread have literally made me lol.

YANBU. Sounds jealous and a bit school girl-ish!

tibbawyrots · 24/08/2016 16:07

It's jealousy. Next year make a cake big enough and hold the party inside the cake. Don't invite the mardy one.

Well done on your cakes! 😃

bibbetybobbetybooo · 24/08/2016 16:08

noblegiraffe

Have to admit to looking at photos of it quite a fair bit! I'm still amazed I managed to make it! Sad how we get a buzz from such things!!!!

Ineedmorelemonpledge · 24/08/2016 16:13

How can there ever be such a thing as too much cake? Wink

brasty · 24/08/2016 16:15

Well done. And don't hold back next year.

bibbetybobbetybooo · 24/08/2016 16:17

So the Mumsnet consensus is to do a massive cake next year?!!! Ok! I'll take that challenge. You've all made me feel much better!

Memoires · 24/08/2016 16:20

She sounds jealous and mean.

WetPaint4 · 24/08/2016 16:20

As others have said, it's just jealousy. Haters like to spread their bitterness around.

Never mind - as someone else pointed out, there is no such thing as too much cake. I wonder if I can get someone to make me a massive huge cake for my birthday.....

bibbetybobbetybooo · 24/08/2016 16:24

I'd love someone to make me one too! Although the smell of fondant did become a bit overpowering!

user1467976192 · 24/08/2016 16:28

Tell her you made it big for her you know she can't resist cake

Memoires · 24/08/2016 16:29

Bibbety, when you make the cake mountain, you need to put a hose through from bottom to top, fix the bottom end of the hose to one of those carbonated drink maker thing they're advertising, fill it with cream which you can then squirt out of the top to make a Mount Etna volcanic eruption. Put some food colouring in the cream so it splurges down thw sides like lava.

Then she'd be impressed, the sour faced bitch!

WetPaint4 · 24/08/2016 16:30

I like that frosting type stuff you get on cupcakes. If someone could bake a multi-layer cake of vanilla, strawberry and chocolate sponge with lots some of that stuff smeared on top of it, I will happy (and later, much fatter).

monkeywithacowface · 24/08/2016 16:30

Jealous mean spirited moo bag! I attempted a stacked cake for DS this year (the boys request get more and more absurd each year) I'm very amateur and have to say this year I was ready to throw it at the wall so kudos to you for making it.
