For the lonely faces, in those empty spaces
For the unloved and the denied
For the little wheels turning bigger deals
For all the dreams that bloomed and those that died

Mother nature don't draw straight lines
We're broken moulds in a grand design
We look a mess but we're doing fine
We're card carrying lifelong members of
The Union of different kinds

All welcome we are Vanilla who makes cakes
Toad who is meme champion
Better who is advisory
Portia who has a famous boyf
AGL who is young
Jess well I dunno
Ruby Being and anyone I've forgotten

Portia - yes - use this example to illustrate to your DD that she can apply all she wants to Exeter, but if she doesn't get in,then she'd better have a very good Plan B.

They don't do January resits anymore? That's not how it was in my day four years ago!

VanillaSugar · 22/08/2016 19:12

Nope. June only. FML.

Vanilla. I went to Plymouth uni, but my mum 'accidentally' told her friend I was at Exeter. Cue a very awkward and embarrassing conversation with the friend.... Do you think she was ashamed.....?

Am completely over it now but it explains a lot

Oh, and Plan B doesn't involve getting a job near the university. Students want to go out with other students.

I try to tell her Vanilla but she has love goggles on. I want to take a sort of diplomatic approach but will mention your dds example.

By the "second choice" that she's coming to terms with, do you mean ideal course/second choice Uni, rather than ideal Uni/second choice course? I can totally understand her disappointment about not getting the right Uni - there are facilities/clubs available in some that are not there in others. (at the same level anyway) The extra-curricular stuff is very important to them too.

Hmnn Jess maybe....

Portia - yes do. Tell her that you will support her all the way to Exeter, but if she doesn't (through no fault of her own) get the grades, then what's her other choice?

Report
VanillaSugar · 22/08/2016 19:22

Yes, second choice uni. Sad

Well I was upduffed at dds age. Not what I want for her but she took herself to get contraception so my message has sunk in.
Just need to get the uni advice sunk in

She hasn't got a second choice yet

Well, she's still got time to decide on one, Portia. She's got another year.

Portia. Am starting to imagine you two as the Cornish Gilmore Girls, complete with bonkers Gran.....but would you have picked Jess?

Report
PortiaCastis · 22/08/2016 19:38

Gran is hungover and very quiet today. Unlike yesterday.
Better yes another year to choose but you'd think Exeter was the only uni in the UK just because the boyf has got a place there

Attractive small town.
Single thirty-something mother with teen daughter.
Hot man on the scene.
Bonkers Gran.
Various other wondrous characters, including Jim.

Portia, I'm gonna make you a star!

Agatha Raison meets Rachel Johnson meets Jilly Cooper meets Wendy Holden!!!

I've got a story about killing off all the school mums I don't like and disguising the murders as spontaneous combustion.

Get a contract drawn up now, Portia, or Jess will be claiming all the royalties. Grin

Mum and oily stepfather are what makes it perfect. That way, no-one can accuse of nicking from being influenced by Gilmore Girls! 'Tis brilliant!
