Bad Moms- why cast Mila Kunis?

Just seen the advert for this new film, and the poster showing Mila Kunis as the lead role.

I know she's a great actress but why cast a 33 year old to be the mother of based on the preview are children who are at least 11 or 12?

All the other 'Bad Moms' are actresses in their late 30s early 40s?

I was looking forward to this film, had only read reviews of what it was going to be about but this will annoy me!

MIL had a 15yo, a 14yo and a 12yo at 33.

In dd2's reception class there are mothers in their early twenties, and mothers in their mid-forties.

ThatsMyStapler · 19/08/2016 09:00

How about Meryl Streep in Mama Mia? Had a teenage fling and gave birth to Amanda Seyfried?.. Never mind the 37 year difference (I think it was a teenage fling)

Katz · 19/08/2016 09:00

Alltehacrbs- yes, that was part of my point, that the lead was younger, I wasn't sure whether she was meant to be the same age (Lewis has said yes that's in her character bio - I hadn't found that info from the reviews I read)

I was 30 when I had my first child and was one of the youngest out of my peer group. I don't know anyone at all who had children at 20.

Despite this, I am well able to look around me and see that there are many millions of people who have children in their early 20s and even younger.

And hurray for that, we can't all do the same thing, it would be weird.

Houseworkavoider · 19/08/2016 09:02

I'm 33 with a 15yr old.

treaclesoda · 19/08/2016 09:02

I would have bloody loved to have had my children in my early 20s. Sadly DH was having none of it. Sad

Gatekeeper · 19/08/2016 09:02

i just wish that MN would get rid of the bloody adverts for it- really annoying when they flash up on every post

Why did that post twice? Ooops

Katz · 19/08/2016 09:06

Gatekeeper - totally agree on that one!

I'll be in my mid forties by the time my first child is in double figures. I've a friend who was a grandmother by the time she was the age I am now. I don't think a 33 year old with an 11 year old is in anyway odd.

Brankolium · 19/08/2016 09:09

Thirty-three is fine for parent of an 11 year old BUT It all depends how young the character was meant to be.

If she's playing a 45 year old then YANBU. Hollywood is horrible for using young (supposedly more attractive) actresses when an older woman would be more realistic in the part.

Moltenpink · 19/08/2016 09:10

Shame that it wasn't given to a 40-something actress though, there aren't as many opportunities compared to male leads.

Moltenpink · 19/08/2016 09:12

Brankolium yes, I was wondering the same, but I haven't seen the film yet.

BrianCoxReborn · 19/08/2016 09:13

I had my first at 24.

I was the oldest mum in every pregnancy/baby situation I atteneded.

I felt quite isolated because when I did meet a few older mums, they viewed me as a young mum and I was kept at arms length.

Luckily I managed to meet a decent human being who happened to be an older mum (36). I hate all the young vs old stuff that goes on (in RL).

davos · 19/08/2016 09:14

Davos - I do find it annoying when they cast 20 something's as 16 year old, so yes the grease example is valid.

But that's wasn't your point and her age is similar to her characters.

Your point was that someone in their early theories wouldn't have a child that age.

I know you said you didn't realise her age and the characters were similar. But surely that's something you would have looked up before getting bothered enough for it to put you off seeing the film or bother writing a post.

TheDowagerCuntess · 19/08/2016 09:15

Out of all the unrealistic things in movies/film to pick up on, this one is waaaay down the list. Grin

Just5minswithDacre · 19/08/2016 09:16

I had an 11 and a 12 year old at about that age.

You're being a prat.

TheFuckitBuckit · 19/08/2016 09:16

I had a 12, 10 and 6 year old at 33.
My mum had a 15, 11(me) and 7 year old at 33.

I don't get it either, It's not so unusual.

NeedsAsockamnesty · 19/08/2016 09:17

At 24 you may consider yourself a young mum, and chances are as will people like your family (my mum still thinks I'm young yet I'm officially old enough to considered a geriatric mum) a handful of much older people may often do that 'oh bless she so young thing' because in comparasion you are younger.

But in real terms your not. In most areas you would be considered to be to old to use most clinics aimed at young people, at 24 you are a real proper grown up.

I had my first baby at 16 in the area I lived I could have gone to baby groups where I was the youngest by 20 years but what I did, was go to ones where I was mid ranged we were between 13-18, I could have also picked the groups where they had a fairly decent mix of ages between about 19 and 30 but I guess just like all the members of the other groups did, I picked the one I felt would give me the best advice the best support and would be the most tailored to my situation along with not having to deal with people making snide comments

DaDman66 · 19/08/2016 09:20

You can have two teens at that age...do the maths.

Just5minswithDacre · 19/08/2016 09:21

It's not that realistic?

20 is still young to have children - I was 24 and that was considered young.

33 minus 12 is actually 21.

And you can't imagine someone doing something three years younger than you were when you did it? Did you have your imagination surgically removed? Along with your arithmetic ability

RainIsAGoodThing · 19/08/2016 09:22

I kind of know what you mean - I thought it was unexpected casting.
Any film I've seen her in has cast her in her mid twenties. Cool though!

AnotherUsernameBitesTheDust · 19/08/2016 09:25

I'd had all my children by the time I was 31. 5 of them! I had my oldest when I was 22.

I've got friends who started their families younger than I did, and some who've only just started (I'm 40 now)

People do have children at different ages you know.

Memoires · 19/08/2016 09:28

Considering that a decade or so ago the nation was wringing its hands collectively over the problem of "teen pregnancies" it's pretty clear that there were quite a few women having babies in their teens.

All those stories about teens getting pg so they could get a Council house (which wasn't really as easy as that), and so on.

News stories, political stories, documentaries, it goes on, and was very prevalent for years. Maybe the numbers have gone down by now.
