Bad Moms- why cast Mila Kunis?

Just seen the advert for this new film, and the poster showing Mila Kunis as the lead role.

I know she's a great actress but why cast a 33 year old to be the mother of based on the preview are children who are at least 11 or 12?

All the other 'Bad Moms' are actresses in their late 30s early 40s?

I was looking forward to this film, had only read reviews of what it was going to be about but this will annoy me!

Not realistic? It's a film, realistic is often a big deal.

However, I had a child at 21, she is now 12. My cousin had her first at 17 and now is early twenties with three kids. How is it not realistic.

Besides which she could be playing someone slightly older. You know, like John Travolta wasn't 18 in grease.

Or is playing someone whose story is based around having kids younger than the others. For variety of characters.

If the fact that a person could have kids at 20 is putting you off a film. Don't go see it.

Birdsgottafly · 19/08/2016 08:48

""20 is still young to have children - I was 24 and that was considered young.""

Not where I live. My Son In Law, at 30, is disappointed that out of their peer group, they're the only ones without children. My DD wants to wait until 35, this is rare in their friendship/peer/our area.

Most people are GrandParents in their 40's, early 50's, that I know.

kirinm · 19/08/2016 08:49

I had an 11 year old when I was 29!

Onthecouchagain · 19/08/2016 08:49

This has not gone how OP had planned.
Really odd thread to be fair. My first was 13 when I was 33, should I be ashamed OP?
YABU.

NoCapes · 19/08/2016 08:49

When I'm 33 my eldest will be 14

Really not unrealistic at all

Fairylea · 19/08/2016 08:49

I am 35 and have a 13 year old (and a 4 year old). When I had dd I wasn't considered young at all!

davos · 19/08/2016 08:49

As I said I'm considered to be a young mum of a teen,

by who? I don't know anyone who would consider a 24 year old a 'young mum'.

Even my friends who had kids in their late theories wouldn't consider 24 as young for having kids.

I guess when you don't know anyone who had their children even younger than you, it becomes less realistic for you.

So you can't watch films unless they seem realistic to you?

Amelie10 · 19/08/2016 08:50

I get what you're saying, I actually don't know anyone who was a young mother or even know having children that young. However it's not unrealistic , as those situations do happen.

Katz · 19/08/2016 08:50

I am wrong - good to debate it with others

Maybe the age difference does represent reality. As an example my 10 year old is going into year 6, the parents I particularly chat with at the gate range from 27 to 53, whilst yes most are in there early 40s, there are definitely those outside that range and we all spend time together.

Kenduskeag · 19/08/2016 08:51

So now we have a 'you're too young to be a mum' thing going on as well? Y'know, baby/toddler groups were a joke for me. I was 24, married, own house, job, all very naice, but it didn't matter. The other attendants were 35+, much more successful, much bigger houses, and they looked down on me like I was some foolish kid. They'd interrupt me to ask what I did (job-wise) or be fairly open with their "gosh you're only young" comments, or the classic "Was it planned?"

I'm sorry you think Mila Kunis is too young to play a mother, which is kinda funny seeing as she is one. I'm sorry you think being a mum to 10/11 year olds and up has a 'proper' range.

Katz · 19/08/2016 08:52

Davos - I do find it annoying when they cast 20 something's as 16 year old, so yes the grease example is valid.

Aside from the fact that lots of women are 33 with children of that age (although I do think probably fewer now than 40 years ago when a lot more people got married a lot younger), you're talking about the actress's age. Which is irrelevant. You do know that actresses and actors can play roles that are - shock horror - older or younger than they actually ARE???? She could be playing someone of 37, which might be more amenable to your view point.

VioletBam · 19/08/2016 08:53

Where I'm from, 30 was considered young to be a parent!

I was the youngest Mother in DD's class. They were all professional women who had children over 35.

Trifleorbust · 19/08/2016 08:53

She is just cast as a young mum, what of it?

ShatnersBassoon · 19/08/2016 08:54

Oh, I wonder if the op was thinking it was unfair on older Hollywood actresses for an unbelievably young person to be cast in that role.

Hmm
PrincessWizard · 19/08/2016 08:54

I'll have a 17 year old by the time i'm 33 Hmm

LewisAndClark · 19/08/2016 08:55

It's a plot point in the film that she had her first child at 20.

The character is 32.

HTH.

GinandTits · 19/08/2016 08:56

I will be 33 when my ds is 11 to. I don't get this. Confused

bushtailadventures · 19/08/2016 08:56

At 33 I had a 15yr old..now I really was a young mum. I don't see what the age of the actress has to do with it really, it's fiction, and as long as she can act the part...

Katz · 19/08/2016 08:56

Kenduskeag - that's exactly what I got too, I just thought I was the the one in the unusual situation and like I said didn't meet anyone younger - maybe there were scared away from the baby groups.

Happy to be corrected and shall go watch and think of all the mumsnetters who had baby's younger than me,

OP posts:
allthecarbs · 19/08/2016 08:57

I don't think op was saying that 20 was too young to be a mum was she?
I would like to see some older women getting lead roles if that is what you mean op.

Chickennuggetsandchips · 19/08/2016 08:57

I'm 26 and have an 11 year old

NeedACleverNN · 19/08/2016 08:58

A total non issue

I was 25 when I had Dd. Not that young sure but I'll still only be 36 when Dd is 11

Katz · 19/08/2016 08:58

Thanks Lewis - I hadn't read that
